I know that Clay's accident happened at the Long Beach Grand Prix in about 1979 or 1980 but I cannot remember which car he was driving when it happened......was it in a Ferrari ??
Many Thanks.........>choochoo

No, it was 1980, in the Ensign N180, when the brake pedal snapped off. Oh, and it's Regazzoni, not Reggazoni. :)

I think it was an Ensign.

I worked for an offshoot of Unipart at that time. I was so pleased when Regga signed to drive the Ensign, it was quite a nice looking car, but the accident, eeekkk!. I sometimes wonder how much force Zunino's Brabham took out of the "main impact". Clay's a top bloke, whom I had the pleasure of standing and talking too right through timed practise once, when I was supposed to be working, but chances like that don't come along too often, and my radio developed a fault!!!

According to Heinz PrĂ¼ller Clay Regazzoni was in talks to become Alfa Romeo sports director in 1985. Any details about that=

Judging by the photos, he aimed right at it and took the right hand side clean off the Brabham. I'm sure it was a heavy impact but the Brabham seemed to stand up very well.

EDIT: Just saw how old the thread is...d'oh.

The Ensign MN 180 is racing again now, in Grand Prix Masters. It is very quick nowadays, have been lapped by it.
Cant help thinking about Regga whenever I see it though.

Question: this cant be the actual crashed tub/chassis/car ?

I doubt it. I seem to remember from the book "Regga" (which I no longer have) that the car was somewhat shortened.

According to the Ensign N180 page at ORC there were three N180 chassis raced in period. Regazzoni crashed chassis MN11 at Long Beach. I believe the car currently raced in GP Masters by Simon Fish is chassis MN14.

Yes Paul,
in his autobiography Clay explain that by purpose he aimed at the Zunino's Brabham, to take off some speed.
He aimed the side of it, without thinking, just by istinct. He was sure he would be dead without this Brabham.
Ciao.

Next to requesting the moderator to merge several loose Regazzoni threads, I like to point out this site to you:

http://www.clayregaz...m/home_eng.html

As an invitation I suppose to come to Lugano and visit the Regazzoni Memorial Room. On the site check out the multimedia --> videos, especially the funny commercials with Rega.
