The first Holden seems to have a large gap between outer rear guard & the tyre, it appears as if the diff has moved over in the body due to the cornering forces or is it a photo optical allusion?

Narrow early FX leaf springs twisting along with rubber mounted shackles will account for sideways movement but I can not recall having seen this much movement as appears in this picture.

A 'Panhard' rod usually took care of that, Daniel...one of the few modifications allowed in Appendix J.

Yes Greg I am well aware of that but to me there seems to be a large gap, no Panhard Rod?

I do think it is an illusion of the pic, the front really does not look much better. Everything has moved on the tyres and probably some spring flex too.

Panhard rods can be bad news too on a leaf spring rear, usually fine in extension but can bind in compression.

The Citroen above was raced a couple of times by Clement...

In the pits his son was running around getting vital information for the AARC files. Later he would race himself and today he's the man behind a book about Warwick Farm.

David Clement had a few minor successes of his own there in another front wheel drive car, not as big as Citroens.

David Clement did run a Mini in various categories., around when I ran my 1071cc car. Was very quick.

We'll no doubt get today's photo tomorrow, Ray. No problem when you've read as much sci-fi as me...

Wonder if photos of Dad will emerge from this?

Just read "All You Zombies" or "By His Bootstraps" by Robert A Heinlein and it will all make perfect sense.

Latest offering from Bob should be -

38 M Savva Sunbeam Alpine 1592 White/Black

The more confusing one is trying to date the multiple Holden photo in post 10053. The high numbers could mean it was taken at the June 1963 WF meeting, but only if Warren Weldon competed with a 48 series in his early days (I've seen photos od him in an FJ). Right or wrong, I'm reading the numbers as 54 and 75 on the 2 front cars.

If Bob has other photos likely to be from the same meeting/corner that might help solve things.

Stephen

If my notes are correct, Warren Weldon drove this early-model Holden at Easter Bathurst in mid-April 1963;

Looks quite different to #54 although, if the Warwick Farm photo was taken in 1962, he might have been busy with mirrors, bonnet-straps & paint in the interval.

Stephen hi,  Thats correct. Mike Savva in the Alpine..At that meeting there were Buckles racing, I have them on the same proof sheet. Its dated but hard to read. By the #s on the Buckles it was the 5-8-62 meeting... On the same sheet it looks like a LADIES race. Have you a list of the ladies. Bob

Kerry hi.  I remember Warren Weldon in a light colour FX with 2 wide stripes over the roof and down the door posts. I think it was painted this way after he rolled it over? and I think it had his name painted underneath the car so you could ID him if he rolled again.. Bob

Bob,

I'm a bit confused with your dates (but that is not hard to do!). The Mike Savva pic looks like is was at WF on 8 September 1963, as you noted. The Buckles in the same Event 2 (marque sports car scratch race - closed cars) were #34 Newell, #35 Booth & #36 Wardrop. By the way, the race was won by Bob Jane in his Jaguar (E), with Newell in second, some 18 second adrift, but only 0.2 seconds ahead of 3rd place White's Porsche (according to my programme notes).

I had a look at the WF programme for 5 August 1962, where there are also 3 Buckles ... two in Event 4 (B sports car scratch race - #43 Lawler & #44 Newell; one in Event 8 (A sports car scratch race - #19 Crampton).

But I don't see a "ladies race" listed at either of these meetings.  There were women drivers at each, but nothing specifically women only. At the 1962 meeting, there were two women in Event 2 (C sports car scratch race) : Mrs S Webb (green MG TC entered by Killara Motor Garage), Miss V Lighezzo (red Daimler SP250 entered by C Hodgins). At the 1963 meeting Mrs S Webb was back again, but this time in a green Austin Healey Sprite entered by BP Castlecove for Event 5 (marque sports car scratch race - open cars).

Does this help?

It would still be a while before Warren Weldon put his stripes on sideways...

Some time between the July '64 meeting at Oran Park and the September '64 meeting.

Weldon rolled the 'black' car [post #10072] at W. Farm, just out of the Causeway. From where I was standing - at the fence near the back of the pits - I saw the right rear wheel roll away from the car, with brake drum and part of the axle attached. The shiny axle-end could be seen, as the car scraped along on the backing plate.

Sadly there's no mention in the race reports of this happening, could it have been in practice for the AJC Trophy race on September 5/6?

September 20 the car had the stripes at Oran Park, August 23 at Catalina it didn't have them.

Typically, Warren didn't seen all that concerned about rolling the Holden...virtually laughing about the "weak spot" in the rear axles. :|

The right rear, minus wheel, 'dug in' on the mound, at the Causeway exit, and the car just fell over. No 'driver error' there.

Like Gavan, I'm a bit confused whether this response is fully based on Savva Alpine or the unidentified Holden photo (or both).

As you must be aware the 3 Buckles were numbered 19, 43 & 44 at the August 1962 WF meeting. But no Ladies Race as Gavan has mentioned, and appears to be no Savva Sunbeam either.

There was a Ladies Race at the October 1962 WF meeting. Where there was Miss B Brown in the 8 Lawler Buclkle and other Buckles numbered 30, 31 & 32. Holdens appear absent at thiat meeting. I also (currently) have December 1961 & June 1962 WF meetings having a Ladies Race. (probably others too, that I haven't listed them in the computer)

I don't know whether a better resolution of the early Holden photo (post 10053) will clear up (for me at least) the numbers of each car so they're easier to read. But basing the numbers as 75 and 54 (as I previously mentioned) then the possible candidate for the lead car if it was the November 1961 WF meeting.is

54 J Hicks Holden 2336 Green

That meeting also had 4 Buckles listed with numbers 22,23,24 & 27,

The December 1961 WF also has a number 54 Holden, but for Kingsley Hibbard in red. Which doesn't quite suit the tones of the car in the photo. Buckles were numbers 11 & 12 and there's a 17 Buvkle in the Ladies Race too.

Stephen

Stephen hi,  Later today I will post up to 8 pics with the Holdens  from that proof sheet.  It is not from the proof sheet with Savva's Alpine......Buckles at WF .. Oct 1962  Miss B Brown Buckle was only entered by Brian Lawler, Brian drove his own Buckle.

..Dec 1961 Miss Lorraine Hill drove Cramptons Buckle with #3 on it as I have a photo of her racing there... #17 was Miss Penny Dyson in her white Buckle. Would like to track her down one day...Bob

'Fraid you'll have to try that one again in a new thread, Seldo. This one has reached gargantuan proportions - more than double what is manageable by the database, which tends to get serious indigestion with long threads - so I'm going to have to lock it. I may even look at splitting it in two!
