onelung, the old glass plates were incredible quality. While I was at Art School I had a part-time job printing the photo orders two nights a week at The Mercury in Hobart (late 70's, early 80's), and occasionally someone would order a print of the old glass negatives. I kept a couple of prints off them, 2 of which were of square rigger ships from the 1800's on the Derwent. As you say, no grain whatsoever and incredible sharpness from the old 6 or 8" lenses. Quite amazing.

Of course the old glass plates were given a really liberal coating of silver halide which made a big difference compared to more modern b/w films.

I wonder if someone like Rob Janney or Bob Biltoft would be able to help?

There's no point in finding out a car it might be, you need the car...

Absolutely Ray,

I'm pretty good at finding people and following leads I just need either the exact car or something that looks like it so I can either prove or disprove it is the same car and keep moving through until I have the car's history. This is the unfortunate situation with wanting to run the car in Group C. I already have a group C mini I race but I would love to build this one up for my father to have a run as well.

Gordon Mitchell is another (in the phone book around Morley somewhere) who might know...

His car preparation in those days was done by Mike Risebrow, who also did Minis I feel sure. Don Hall is yet another.

It seems nobody in WA knows about this car as a request on the local Speedwest site hasn't even given me a reply.Terry Walker's website race results tells me that Neil Moore raced in 3 meetings in 1970.
Some of the people you mentioned Ray are connected with the site.We will keep digging.

Did Jim Mullins run a red one at some stage? Possibly 71ish.

Hope this isn't hijacking the thread. If people wish for me to take it back to the PM's happy to do so?

The last one is still the Brabham-Alfa... but that's '68... or the Hordern Trophy meeting, more likely...

As is the one of Fred Gibson leading John Harvey. The No 41 Elan seems to me to be the Canberra car, was it Jim Quinn?

Sitting up on the back of the car with Frank Gardner is Glenn Abbey, in the left hand seat appears to be Alec Mildren, I wouldn't take bets on the bloke in the middle, but if it's the Hordern Trophy meeting then it's likely Geoffrey Percival Frederick himself.

Just whisk me back to December, 1967 and I'll stop him and ask as he goes past Point M...

I really should know who those Elfin Monos are driven by, but I'm not at home tonight to check RCN.

Rob, the car has a trade plate...so maybe a check of who was flogging Ferrari in Sydney in those days might be a good start? Cheers, Mick

Ellrosso,

The Elfin Mono #17 is probably Ray Cary. The Lotus Cortina #6 is Chris Brauer, the Mini #14 in front of him is Trevor Meehan and the Mini behind is probably Laurie Stewart. Mini #17 is B A Jones and the one behind him could be Foley. As Ray suggested the Elan #41 Jim Quinn in front of, I think, Niel Allen in Fred Gibson's old Elan repainted.

The Brabham Climax #3 is Fred Gibson in front of Johnny Harvey in the Jane Brabham Climax. Not sure about the Elfin Mono #11. I don't have the programme for that meeting. As Ray said it would be the Hordern Trophy meeting.

Dale.

"B A Jones" would be Bruce Jones, Dale. Bumped into him a few months back....still a Jaguar nut.

Thanks everyone. Big help. The Ferrari was the subject of a Rob Luck pictorial in Oct '67 Sports Car World (track test of Cusack Mustang too) which made me think it was a late '67 meeting, but sounds like it was... early '68?

The Sydney Ferrari dealer was Scuderia Veloce, so it's nothing to do with them...

But the likes of Alec Mildren and other classy dealers might have had a second hand car at any time.

The Elfin Mono (11) would be the McGuire car driven by Noel Riley...

Known as the Elfin Lancia.

As already discussed it appears that the latest batch from Lindsay are from the December 3, 1967 Hordern Trophy Gold Star Meeting. Looking at the programme and most photos appear to telly. The exception is the #41 & #61 Lotus Elan photo that is probably another meeting. Even the background light for this photo is a bit different.

Although many photos showing competitors have been identified, I'll give their programme entry info anyway.

Event 5 - 7th Hordern Trophy Gold Star Race - 45 laps.

#2 Bob Jane Racing Team (Dvr - J Harvey) (Vic) Repco Brabham Climax 2496 Red

#3 N E Allen (Dvr - F Gibson) (NSW) Repco Brabham Climax 2495 White

#11 J P McGuire (Dvr - Brian Page) (NSW) Elfin Lancia V4 1450 Blue

#17 A Costanzo (Vic) Elfin Mono Ford 1498 Blue

Event 6 - Touring Car Race - division 1 - 10 laps.

1501 -3000cc

#6 C D Brauer Lotus Ford Cortina 1598 White/Green

1101 - 1500cc

The number on the white Elan is 6, not 61...

Obviously a practice day photo if it's Niel coming up behind Quinn.

Perhaps I should have been a little more informative in regards the Lotus Élan photo, but the numbers don't stack up for it to be from the 1967 Hordern Meeting's Event 8 - Sports Car Race - Division 1 - 10 laps. There's 7 Elans entered, but their numbers range from #8 Allen/Gibson, #9 MacArthur, #10 Evans, #11 Meyer, #12 Goodwin, #17 Beasley & #18 Woodward.

The Ferrari was ex Aga Khan, 1963 model and picked up from the British & Continental showroom in William St, Sydney. Here are a few more W Farm shots. Unfortunately these negs are all over the place and may not all be from the same meeting.8302_P_Imp_67-lo_zps6c173980.jpg8301_P_Foley_67-lo_zps89e1d111.jpg8299_P_Mini_67-lo_zps674a2e9d.jpg8298_P_Sharp_67-lo_zpscdb14598.jpg8297_P_Foley_67-lo_zps1950258a.jpg8294_P_Elan_67-lo_zpsb2f16c80.jpg8293_P_Elans_67-lo_zps4f5e5dd5.jpg

Hi Seldo. Was it a burgundy colour?  Well-known 'purveyor of classic and racing cars', Jim Harwood, had a similar one here in the West at one stage.

He also went on a buying trip to the middle-east in the 60s.

A dark red or burgundy colour would seem to fit in with my overall recollections of that time...

I just wonder if David got up some wheelspin in one of the side streets off William Street?

I'm pretty sure that was the black one, although we also had a dark-red one as well, but I recall that it was a coupe.

I would say it was also one of ours as well as we had a showroom full of them....
I'm sure I've related the story on here about Bill Reynolds and the Mercedes 600 in our showroom...But I won't take us OT at this stage.

I just wonder if David got up some wheelspin in one of the side streets off William Street?

Not saying...

The Ferrari is Burgundy by the looks of the SCW cover shot - it is backlit but you can see a deep red hue.

And the colours look right. From memory, Norm Beechey and Tubby Ritter were involved in this foolishness.

But that's not the only thing. In Australia they couldn't even win their class.

It looks like  one of 2 Castrol sponsored Imps that Ritter had in Castrol Green with White Stripes

Bruce Hindaugh often drove one of them.

One was more highly developed than the other

They both ran at Hume Weir 12/66

McKeown had a Black one . Beecehey drove it on the odd occasion..It ran at Calder 8/66

The others were all of heavier build.

That's Len Goodwin, later to race the M4a among other things...

Harry Cape from Tamworth, who'd previously run an Elite, would later race a GT6.

Bob Johns, something of a super-enthusiast who'd buy the Lotus 59 and race it for a while, later contributed to Bart Mawer's F3 career.

I went to 3 Warwick Farm meetings in 1967 and I couldn't find Barry Sharp in any of the programs. The photo of Brian Foley with a trophy has me puzzled as I thought he came second - to Frank Gardner in the GTA - if it is the Feb 19 meeting.

These pics are acknowledged above as being from the Hordern Trophy meeting in December...

Foley and Stewart in their 1310cc and 1098cc Minis were first and second over five laps in a Minis-only race. Foley was second outright behind Beechey in the 10-lap main touring car event.

Through my UK-based, Aussie friend, Richard he has been able to contact Alan Pate and then Len Goodwin to confirm the #66 Élan is definitely Len. In fact these are his words.

"Lotus Elan #66 was me on one of my very first visits to Warwick Farm. The three white stripes on the rear of the car indicates Provisional Licence driver. The car was original accept for Dunlop Yellow Spots. See you Saturday.

Cheers,
Len Goodwin"

Alan & Len share a 26R replica and will be having a run at Wakefield Park this W/E.

To my way of thinking, there's a lot more interest in Len's racing career after the Elan...

He got into open-wheelers and then he got to drive the M4a under the Pat Burke Racing banner. Can we find out more about how that came about?

Where to ask the question...rather then a fresh thread, here?

watching the Bathurst 500 story on 4 corners.

What was the career history of John Ellis of Chrysler?
