Hi everybody

i have a new question about 350P SV race meetings:

The car was at Warwick Farm on 18.2.1968  with Chris Amon

But i do not know if  the car was also at Warwick Farm on 5.5.1968 ? Maybe with Bill Brown ?

thanks in advance   ;)

Third on the grid, ran second to Matich and ahead of Niel Allen until lap 16...

Then retired from the 23-lap race with sand jamming the throttle slides. I don't know if he spun or was pushed off the road by a car he was lapping to get that sand in there.

thanks Ray

And i guess that the car had the green strip for that meeting, because it was after Bathurst.

So, in summary:

11.2.1968 Tasman Surfers Paradise/Chris Amon #4
18.2.1968 Tasman Warwick Farm/Chris Amon #4
25.2.1968 Tasman Sandown Park/Chris Amon #4
04.3.1968 Longford/Chris Amon/Bill Brown #4
15.4.1968 Bathurst/Bill Brown #4 (green strip)
05.5.1968 Warwick Farm/Bill Brown #4 (green strip)
01.9.1968 Surfers Paradise 6 Hours /Jim Palmer/Bill Brown #17 (green strip)

I thought we did this?

As you don't have its Lakeside win in there I guess I'll have to go through and do a full rundown for you.

Looks like you've missed just the one meeting...

Lakeside 12.5.68 - 20 laps, #4 - 1st; 6 laps - 2nd to Allen; 8 laps - 1st (mixed with Racing Cars)

thanks Ray,

So for that race also in May , i guess the driver was B. Brown and the car had the green strip; but difficult to confirm without pics

Correct on both counts...

The quiet newsagent was certainly the driver. I remember well that scenario when he came around with the throttles jammed, a real surprise.

Is it possibly the warm-up lap or something?

That could go either way, GreenMachine...

The area shown didn't have space for many people, but it was a good spot all the same. There's an embankment just out of frame, on balance I do think it's race day.

Rod should know anyway.

What a great day this was!

Even if it was practice day.

...Glyn was too.

Oh yeah, that last one is a special for Paul Newby.

Hi Ray,

The shot is definitely a raceday pic. I hope you were not suggesting that the photographer was a bit casual!

I think maybe Bill Brown was being careful through the Esses. In someone else's Ferrari it was a daunting situation.

I do have a pic of Pete Geoghegan in the "Old Red Lady" in nearly the same spot with opposite lock correction, so I understand your comment/query.

Well...

Or will you put that in the other thread?

And I know you're not any more casual than you have to be, Rod.

Pete had to get some attitude up there...

He lapped at 1:37.8 in that race, 1:37.3 in the 5-lapper for GT cars by nearly 30 seconds.

Brown had Allen's measure in the race, the Elfin apparently having some handling problems. However, Allen's 1:32.9 in practice had bettered Brown's time by a tenth, while in the race Allen finally got down to 1:30.9. It would be nice to know what time Bill did get down to, Matich improved from 1:29.0 in practice to 1:27.3 in the race to lower his outright record (1:28.5) set dicing with Amon three months earlier.

No pics of Bill with Niel on his tail, Rod?

Sorry Ray, most remiss of me. None in the shoebox of Bill and Niel. However some single car shots.
Others are varied, and I have a roll from practice too.

I've been watching this space for Paul Newby to reply, and to then find out what car that is behind Glyn Scott, and why Paul would recognise it.

Is it a Mercedes 600? AKA a Mercedes-Benz 'Grosser'?  Wasn't it around the time of that photo a Grosser Merc (a most unsuitable saloon racing car) was being touted to turn up at a certain racetrack in October?

Sure looks like a 600 to me. Janey was driving one at about this time.

Rings a bell to me too. Though I thought the Bathurst 'attack' was a couple of years later.Though in those days Bob was not short of a toy or two.

Both Bob and brother Bill drove various 600s over the years.

I don't think it ever went to Queensland...

Certainly not that meeting, he had the E-type and maybe the Elfin there.

So, regardless of owner, is it a Grosser? It seems to sit pretty low in that pic, but maybe Glyn is taller than I recall.

Then, once Paul is back here, now that people  other than Paul (well, me for one), are curious, we can discover his connection to that car, regardless of make.

It's not a Grosser...

It's the make of car that Paul plays with.

It's the make of car that Paul plays with.

Then it must be an Alfa - a Giulia as baz says. Height's right, colour unusual, and it's hard to see the wraparound Alfa rear screen in that pic. Roof overhang about the same for the big Merc and the Giulia. Looks longer than a Giulia, but you were there, and Paul's the Alfisti guy. 2600 sedan, maybe? Probably too rare..

Moving right along...

It's no secret that Paul plays with Alfas...

And the fact that the TI is behind Glyn is only incidental to the photo, I just thought Paul might appreciate realising it was there.

When was my last riddle? Or do I have to put up with a whole bunch of Mick clones?
