My best F1 memories all include Gilles. My worse F1 memory also includes Gilles.
30 years have gone and I still feel the same pain when I remember his tragic death.
There was never a driver like him and I doubt there will be another.

Jacques Villeneuve drove his father's 1979 Formula 1 Ferrari at Fiorano on Tuesday to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the elder Villeneuve's death.

Very lucky - must have been very emotional.

You can tell from my body language I was very emotional sitting there. It was an incredible feeling to sit in the same race car that Gilles had once driven in anger.

I agree with you and I doubt also, because Gilles was an extremely rare synthesis of excellent characteristics. Simply unique.-

Who wouldn't be amazed?!! [I visited the Galleria Ferrari so many times but never persuaded them to not to look at me for a moment...]. You are very lucky!

I still can't believe I got to sit in the car. All I did was ask and was told: "sure"
Here's another shot of me sitting in the car.

Thanks all, glad you enjoyed the photos. Tough to work on them, I was 18 then and losing Gilles is something I've never quite "put behind..."

Cheesy, what a moment that had to be for you! Congrats on your "ride." Awesome.

Thanks Again. :)

For anyone with access to Sky Sports F1 this weekend: http://www1.skysport...d-Prix-Schedule

Staying on the Villeneuve theme, this weekend's coverage will also include recordings of interviews with Gilles, never broadcast before on television, made by the journalist Nigel Roebuck in which the Ferrari legend discusses his career. We're reliably informed that they make for riveting listening.

8 mei 2013

And again it is that date May 8th, be it in another year yet again.
Another year since 1982, and it still feels as if it happened yesterday.
Addio Gilles, you won't be forgotten.
Thanks for the memories

Henri

Whilst looking around for a few quotes to post on another forum I found this:

The best one, and the one that all motorsport fans should repeat is this from Keke:

"Gilles was the hardest bastard I ever raced against, but completely fair."

RIP Gilles.

Another year. Amazing how time flies.

Thanks Gilles.

Probably nothing new in here since I last posted this. Hopefully there's someone here who hasn't seen it yet or someone who wants to revisit my Gilles set.....

I hadn't realized that this day marked another year of the loss of Gilles til I joined the forum today.  Sigh...  Time does heal wounds.  But it doesn't erase the fond memories.  They come flooding back.

Merci, Gilles.

I was very saddened to hear of his death in1982. Having meet him at the same track in 1979.

A candle will be burned again today by me, as always on May 8th if humanly possible.

Despite the fact that I found out what had happened that day in 1982 one day later.

Salut Gilles, after all these 33 years I still haven't seen a driver who posessed all of your talents in the blend you had them en showed them to the world.

No matter that there are drivers with much better statistics, I'll always appreciate your stats over whatever multichamp we have seen since your demise.

Salut and thanks for the memories, rest in peace,

Henri

Saw a tribute clip on French language RDS Quebec today with  Joanne, Melanie and Jacques. Some nice footage of snowmobiles and racing cars. One place he will never ever be forgotten.

RIP Gilles.
