Welcome to the first results for Guess The Grid 2007. A good feild of players for the first round with 68 of you entering. However there were 4 players who entered after the deadline of start of Friday first practise. We will go easy on you this time but please note that if you enter a round late and you are in contention for the title we may apply a penalty to make it fair on those who do enter on time.

A couple of things about the result thread. Please feel free to discuss, boast or generally make comments in this thread. I will try to get these results posted each race weekend before the start of the GP but no promises. You will note that the word "rookie" will appear against some names each week, this means that this is the first round they have entered this year. The exception being this round where it means that these people didn't play last year. I will let you know how the group collectively went in guessing the final makeup of the grid by averaging all the guesses. The top ten is decided first by the ten drivers that get the most mentions, then the average of those guesses. Going forward I will also compare this to the WDC points standings and the super stats qualifying result as published by Autosport.com.

By the way don't forget to pick 10 drivers each week, I will not be reminding you to amend your guess if you do not list enough names so you score no points for the shortfall of guesses. If you post two entries in the thread I will take the last one of these regardless of whether you then go back and amend your first guess. I usually don't find these until I am collating the results and all the timestamps have been stripped out so I have no idea which was the last otherwise.

Now on to the information you are looking for. A slowish start to the year brought on, I think, by the driver-go-round in the off season and some inconclusive testing results. Good to see a minnow in Super Aguri doing really well, no one at all picking Sato to get there. I guess he wouldn't have if Massa had not had his problems but that is the nature of car racing. The top 3 positions all went to people that didn't play last year with the top score of 17 going to Jaun Kerr. Second went to Matt Foster with third to Kooper. The average grid scored a paltry 10 putting it mid field at 36th along with 15 others. Here is the full result table for this round.

My result would have been helped if I had put my GTG guess in instead of my GTR guess. Short 2 drivers plus the wrong drivers in the wrong positions for the grid. Oh well I guess I can only get better.

I think it is a shame how every year games are started up, and the stated rules are then not followed.

We sling at each other over which teams are cheating / working outside the spirits of the rules. And then year after year, there are games that are not conducted within the rules of the game.

If the 4 that posted late are given points, then I am out.

This is the first time I've done these bets and games and the first race is by far the hardest with nothing but testing to go on. There were some suprises but glad to see the back of that race and a not so bad result.

I will continue to "develop" in future races and hope to catch up to the front runners. :p

WD to all. And kudos to garth for getting the results posted so quicky.

Its the drivers that done it for me not the cars, I mean I couldn't decide whether we'd see the Toyotas or Williams' in the top ten so I backed the more solid drivers (Ralf and Trulli) also that Honda is obviously too big a shitehouse to drive through the problems. There's always a circumstantial upset (Massa) I've decided not to account for that because its impossible to predict just carry on as if the theoretical norm is there, not sure if that's the best strategy, Shays ? you know better than me.

We have always allowed some leniency in the first round. Maybe we should apply the rules more harshly but remember this is an amatuer game with the objective of encouraging participation and making the race weekend more interesting.

I would be interested to here what others think.

A game is only fun if it is being taken seriously.

Why do you make rules for the game, if they are then not the rules?

If one of the 4 at the end of the season win the season game with less points than what they picked up here, then the whole season was won by a player not following the rules.

I have left games every season at Atlas for the same reason that I will leave this one, if the 4 get the points.

I will play the games according to the rules, and expect all others to do the same. If the rules does not mean anything, then the game is meaningless then I will just comment in the various forums and forget about the game.

Totally agree that someone who posts late should not win the game. We have always had people that post late and, to the best of my knowledge, they have never been in a winning position.

I will defer to the Gerry on this as the host of the game. I will PM him and ask him to reply in this thread.

When I have scored this game in the past I have always pointed out when there have been late posters. I think that is only fair to all players to know someone has posted late.

I will get over it by leaving the game if your guess is allowed to stay. If you want to participate in a game where the stated rules are not to be followed then go ahed. The only clarification that I need is:

1) Yes the game will conducted according to the rules stated.

2) No we will change the rules as the season go along, starting this first race by allowing guesses posted after the deadline.

If 1) - Then I play.

If 2)- Then I do not play.

It really is straight forward. Follow the rules, or don't.

I suggest that we follow the rules.

I think the rules must be maintained clearly and impartially from the first race onwards.

Rule Clarification

The rule will now stand as follows:

3. Post your guesses anytime before the start of Friday First Practice . You can change your guesses as many time as you like as long as its done before Friday First practice. Any posts or changes made after FRIDAY first practice begins will be INVALID!

Only guesses made before Friday First Practice begins will be calculated and count towards the championship.

However...

If your guesses are put in late - Garth will still calculate your result and the result will be tabulated in a seperate table to the main scoreboard. A cumulative table of late entry scores will also be tabulated in each results thread so that at the end of the championship you can add any points you received for late entries to your actual championship score (points for guesses made on time) and see where you would have finished. But I stress - points you receive for late entries will not go towards your actual score which determines the GTG Champion. Ive only allowed the scoring for you own comparison purpose at season's end.

I have no choice guys - sorry to those who did post late - but this is the best i can do to make it fair for everyone. Try and look at missed or late guesses as mechanical problems that hurt your points tally but your still in the championship fight. Dont give up if you posted late - as this week was a low scoring game so points lost wont be much at all.

Garth will amend the above results soon.

My suggestion:

Just as in the current qualifying system - put in a "banker" set of guesses as soon as the thread is put up and amend them later on as the race gets closer. This way if you forget to amend your guesses - then you have your "banker" guesses to fall back on.

If you know that you will be away - please feel free to PM me or Garth your guesses in advance.

My Pledge:

To help you get your guesses in on time, I will pledge too

1. Post the new GTG thread as soon as possible to give you as much time as possible to place your bets.

2. Link to the new GTG thread in my sig

3. Post more than one GTG thread when there are back to back GP's one week apart (ie. US and Canada).

I will post Malaysia GTG shortly and Bahrain GTG a week before Malaysia. Its up to you when you post your guesses.

Hope that helps. Feedback would be appreciated

why don't you just STFU and learn to add simple numbers
before trying and failing BIG TIME to run a game
who cares if you whineing self plays or not
or is this payback for saving your mess up ?

nobody who was late because of the earlyer then normal early friday sesion plus the day off BS
caused by the race being down under and on the other side of the date line
got any big advantage or did better then poorly

so why the drama queen BS about some very below avg scores??

Wow, that's a bad start for me. I guess I'm the Honda in this field. :)

Oh, and I'm not really a rookie, I just took a Prost-esque sabbatical last year. ;)
