Jerry Entin: Great stuff on Roy Schechter. I was working as a gofer for Pete Laffe and Jim Harcum who drove the Mickey Mouse and Mighty Mouse Specials (Al Sager VW, Jacksonville) when Roy had the big crash at Daytona with E. D. MArtin (Birdcage Maser). Terrible accident which burned Martin very seriously and caused a long and painful recovery which resulted in his retirement from racing. I have Claude Haycraft's negatives from those days and would be pleased to share the photos with this site (which Frank Hilson...Lola Mk 1 put me on to). We plan to celebrate the cars anad drivers of the Cuban races next year at Amelia. We'd be pleased to have Roy join us.

Claude Haycraft took some beautiful shots of his friend Joe Sheppard's cars and some of them have been posted elswhere on TNF. Any photos of the cars from those times, especially detail-rich negatives, will be of great interest.

Bill Warner: Welcome to the Forum.

It was Don Sesslar who tangled with E.D. Martin's Birdcage Maserati at Daytona in 1959. Roy Schechter was not present at Daytona that weekend.

I am glad you enjoyed reading about Roy Schechter. Roy has very kindly lent all his pictures to this site for the Forum members to enjoy. He is still flying his own plane in his 80's. ED Martin is seen in the thread on Alan Connell.

This comes from Jack Shea:

Just returned from Florida visiting with Joe Sheppard, he is healthy and in good spirits.

Just was viewing a thread on the TNF about around Roy Schechter. I will ask, can you update the thread to fix some conflicting information.

It is posted that Joe Sheppard won the 1959 race at Alamar Cuba with his brother Bob ? Joe's only brother was Jack JR. No Bob in family.

Also it states he drove the 4hrs with his brother, wrong, Joe drove all but one hour. Putting his German factory Porsche trained mechanic Fritz Schidel in the car for the mandatory one hr period.

Are the earlier photos still accessible in this thread? I'm trying to figure out if they have expired or it's just my computer :-/

It was a typical Memorial Day for me, up early to read the information written about Indy, Monaco and that stuff NASCAR calls racing ? Next start calling to thank the Greatest Generation or what's left of them I have had the pleasure of knowing. Called Joe Sheppard thanked him for his service. Next up was Roy, his wife Gail answered , unusual if Roy was home ? As soon as she started talking I knew Roy had passed. Sat in stunned silence as she spoke for about 1/2 an hour about his send off. Roy's wishes where he be scatered to rest over the Everglades from a plane, so he was thanks to his friends, a small formation flying down from Miami ,6 or 7 in a row. I'll miss Roy's conversations, not about racing so much, his accomplishments are well documented, but about his time behind the stick of a B24. If there was ever a story to be told about going the extra mile Roy's was it. To Gail and his family, my condolences to you all.
