You cannot have it both ways - cheap books on Amazon or a flourishing book publishing sector. It was always going to end this way after the loss of the Net Book Agreement.
Indeed. When I look back on the ultimately futile campaign we fought to keep the NBA I'm reminded of what Lord Melbourne once said: “What all the wise men promised has not happened, and what all the damned fools said would happen has come to pass.” I count myself a proud damned fool!
Ironically, Amazon are now trying to dictate minimum prices to publishers, effectively reintroducing a form of Resale Price Maintenance, under which the NBA was specifically exempt..The only remaining exemption is now a specified list of non-prescription medicines, a measure designed to protect independent pharmacies. Just as the NBA was there to protect independent bookshops.

Amazon is putting publishers under "heavy pressure" to introduce new terms. The Bookseller reports that these include the proviso that "should a book be out of stock from the publisher, Amazon would be entitled to supply its own copies to customers via its print-on-demand facilities", and that "books cannot be sold for a lower price than Amazon's anywhere, including on a publisher's own website".
