Or £23.32 from Amazon's alter ego Book Depository.  Incidentally, I find www.123pricecheck.com to be very useful in finding the best price amongst the usual UK suspects for books (and DVDs).

Edit: This is in reply to Simon's post immediately above but for some reason the Quote option doesn't seem to be working for me

Simon yes and no!! Yes wonderful racephotos, but the 'blue-blooded' Lady has thrown in far too many family pics, at least for my taste...

Oh Jack, I didn't want  to 'warn' buyers, but...normally you can return books if not satisfied..

As I said RACE-pics excellent and even rare, but please more of these ...

To put it mildly, I don't give a **** on social life of 'upper class' people, and would never buy photos of them...

Thanks, Michael.  I don't mind the pictures of truly* upper class people,  if from an historic perspective, although as you imply, I would never purchase a book just on that subject!  So, I think I'll go through with the purchase.  I'm likely to learn something!

Jack ,the only consolation I can offer that the author is a member of 'real' nobility...if that helps. No artificial stars..

Chaters the bookshop at Brands Hatch is to close on the 23 November 2014.

This bookshop has existed at the circuit for as long as I can remember (late 1970's) so I will be sad to see it go, I have purchased many books from there.

The shop keeper mentioned that there has been a drop in the number of books being purchased from this shop, hence the closure.

The Porsche 4-cam book is expected here in the US in early December, but it has already slipped back several times, so the schedule is not firm. We are looking forward to it!

If I may be permitted a plug. Reinhard Klein the well known Rally photographer and book publisher telephoned yesterday to say that the boxed coffee table book on Jim Clark will be delivered next week just in time for Christmas. The book is in German and English and features a large collection of photographs, many of which were completely new to me from all over the World of Clark in action. It has over 300 pages of photos. Check it out at www.mckleinstore.com.

I should not think any book publisher worth his salt is going to accept a manuscript and invest a four or five figure sum to have it printed / published in book form and try to market it after it has already appeared in ebook form and is being sold on online by the likes of Amazon!

I too am a paper lover (also a specialist publisher) but sadly the writing is on the wall when it comes to the printed book. With less than a thousand independent bookshops in the UK and very few specialist retailers - either online or in bricks and mortar form - (not amazon, book depository and alike) it is all downhill from here. Already fewer printed books are being published and specialist publishers are either shutting shop or reducing their programmes drastically.

You cannot have it both ways - cheap books on Amazon or a flourishing book publishing sector. It was always going to end this way after the loss of the Net Book Agreement.  At least the French have kept their senses regarding book discounting  - it is limited to something like 5% in that country.

Indeed. When I look back on the ultimately futile campaign we fought to keep the NBA I'm reminded of what Lord Melbourne once said: “What all the wise men promised has not happened, and what all the damned fools said would happen has come to pass.” I count myself a proud damned fool!

Ironically, Amazon are now trying to dictate minimum prices to publishers, effectively reintroducing a form of Resale Price Maintenance, under which the NBA was specifically exempt..The only remaining exemption is now a specified list of non-prescription medicines, a measure designed to protect independent pharmacies. Just as the NBA was there to protect independent bookshops.

Quote

Amazon is putting publishers under "heavy pressure" to introduce new terms. The Bookseller reports that these include the proviso that "should a book be out of stock from the publisher, Amazon would be entitled to supply its own copies to customers via its print-on-demand facilities", and that "books cannot be sold for a lower price than Amazon's anywhere, including on a publisher's own website".

Wildly off our core topics perhaps but if you're interested in racing you can't help being interested in Ferdinand Porsche and his remarkable creations for both Austro Daimler and Auto Union.

I've just published a book about Ferdinand that pulls the dust covers off his most secret activities, those on behalf of the military. This was Austria-Hungary in WW1 and of course Germany in WW2. He was also active between the wars, designing secret tanks for Daimler-Benz and preparing engine designs for the Luftwaffe. If any other engineer/builder/manager created more high-tech material in the two wars, I have yet to figure out who he may be.

My well-illustrated new book, Professor Porsche's Wars, is published in the UK by Pen & Sword and is a heck of a read if I do say so myself. It will be distributed in the USA by Casemate and is available through the usual sources.

Of clear interest to any and all interested in what we used to call technology I reckon.

Karl:

Good hear about your new Porsche book. I plan to order 30 copies from Casemate. An old Porsche friend, Grady Clay, always wanted to know more about Dr. P's military involvement and was thrilled when I told him you were working on this book, but sadly he passed in June, so he won't get to see it. Does it cover the Weisel (? sp), circa-1976?

Alan Henry book - only on Kindle and at the price is worth a read as it is an enjoyable ramble through AH's long involvement with GP racing. Some good insights into Rindt , Ecclestone and Chapman especially. I felt the book was more of a long and rambling letter to a friend - structurally it is loose and if it appears as a 'proper' book it needs a judicious edit to remove some of the typos and stylistic hiccups in places.

But as a rollicking read it's a good way to spend a wet Sunday evening I found

Agreed, but Kirby's books have a way of disappearing off the radar for awhile.  Does anybody know the status of his announced books on Newman-Haas Racing, working title, "Mario's Team," or the history of persons finishing second at the Indy 500?  The NHR book was close to production back in February with a scheduled summer 2014 release, but instead we got an entirely appreciated but not previously announced book on Jim McGee.  The mysteries of publishing . . .

Well I take that back.  He did discuss the McGee book on his site.

I didn't know a Gurney autobiography was in the works.  That's something to look forward to.  Does he have a collaborator?

Speaking of Penske, which we were, sort of, does anyone know why the Captain wasn't interviewed for "Beast"?  If he was it wasn't apparent in the book.  I enjoyed the book, but it does seem to have that gaping omission.

Thanks for this info! This seems to be an Hungarian project, and although I'm not fluent in the language, there's an email where we could get some more info at the end of this article:

Jack ,the only consolation I can offer that the author is a member of 'real' nobility...if that helps. No artificial stars..

Be brave!!!

Michael,

I bought the book and enjoyed it very much.  The photography is quite evocative.  Have you ever noticed that people react differently to the camera if they have no idea that the picture will be seen by the public?  And then, some 60 years later the picture is in a book!  Alas, those days are gone.  There's no guarantee that your mug won't show up on some dweeb's web site or Facebook wall.....

Jack asked: "Speaking of Penske, which we were, sort of, does anyone know why the Captain wasn't interviewed for "Beast"?  If he was it wasn't apparent in the book.  I enjoyed the book, but it does seem to have that gaping omission."

Jack:

Evidently RP is not a big fan of sitting still for interviews. His ex-PR-guy Dan Luginbuhl agrees. That's why there has so far been no RP bio, another gaping omission.

Does anybody know the status of his announced books on Newman-Haas Racing, working title, "Mario's Team,"

Don't hold your breath. I have been told by people close to the Haas family that it is not going to happen.
