Can any of you folk assist in filling in some blanks with regard to Tom Trana's rally results whilst with Volvo in the 1960s.
To start with I have his finish classifications of 1st, 1st and 3rd for the 1964, 1965 and 1966 Rally of the Midnight Sun but does anyone know his car number on each of these events and the numbers of starters and finishers?
Can anyone fill me in on the 1964 Hankirally which I understand was run in Finland. I believe he won this event? But again have no other details.
And lastly, until the next time, he competed in the 1964 KNA rally, again I have no other detail. Was this a Norwegian event? What was its status? I assume a national event? Was this the same as the earlier Viking Rally?
Lots of questions, and hopefully some of you folk who have databases and other sources of information might be able to fill in some of the missing info.

Thanks to all
Bill

There should be some data and contacts here:
http://www.forum-aut...sujet378189.htm
As far as UK events in 1965 are concerned, Trana's co-driver was killed in a road accident during the 65 Gulf London Rally and repercussions meant he did not come to the UK for the 65 RAC Rally to go for his hat trick of wins.

Here come some more

Midnight Sun rally

1964
1 Tom Trana
2 Harry Kallstrom
3 Bengt Soderstrom

Midnigth sun has mowed to winter and was now called The swedish rally

1965
1 Tom Trana
2 Ake Andersson
3 Bjorn Waldegard

1966
1 Ake Andersson
2 Simo Lampinen
3 Tom Trana

I think that the KNA-rally is the same as the norwegian Winter rally. KNA is the norwegian Automobile Club. The Viking rally was not a winterrally but it was a norwegian rally. 1964 the danish has take over the name Viking and organized a Vikingrally

Thanks to RS2000 and pingst. That fills in a few more details.

Can anyone tell me the number of cars that started on these events, also the number of classified finishers?

As regards the 1965 International Gulf London Rally, this of course was the first of the series run by London Motor Club. The Clerk of the Course was David Seigle-Morris.
Tom Trana in car number 1 started at 14.01 hrs from Fortes Airport Hotel, London Airport and drove to the first special stage Speech House (a stage I know quite well having run it on several UK national rallies) which is in the Forest of Dean on the England/Wales border. His time on this stage was 10 minutes 41 seconds against a target time of 10 minutes 23 seconds. They then drove the short road section to SS 2 at Mailscott Woods where they managed 6 minutes 58 seconds against 6 minutes 36 seconds target time. The next stage SS3 was at Brecon in Wales and the tragic accident was on the road section to there. I have Tom and Gunnar's original Special Stage Time Cards for the fist two stages.

I believe Tom Trana competed on the Polish Rally which took place 30th July to 3rd August 1964, again any more information, car number, finishing position, number of cars starting and finishing the event?

Can anyone else add any more events that Tom Trana competed in during the 1960s?

Does anyone know which Swedish events formed the Swedish national rally championship in 1964 and 1965?

1964 Safari - Trana had a sponsored entry as winner of the RAC Rally so Volvo entered a team. Unfortunately the cars were delayed on the high seas and they were left with insufficient time to set the cars up for East African conditions. Trana did not finish neither did any of the other Volvos.

But, his car stayed in Kenya and was used by Joginder Singh to win in 1965 and a legend was born.

Edit: It was the RAC Rally not the Monte

Thanks RS 2000, pingst and D-Type.

I have a full entry list for the event and results for Class D for the 1965 Rally Bore. But did not know it was part of the Swedish Rally Championship.

5/6th February 1965, Rally Bore, Tom Trana/Gunnar Thermaenius Car 7
Classification 1st in class D (over 1600 cc) 4th overall. The event attracted 112 Entries
Bjorn Valdegard/Lars Nystrom won the event with 1280 points.

I will scan and post the full entry list and Class D results in the next couple of days.

I also have a Time Card for Car 8 in Class 5 for Tom Trana for the SMK Uppsala Roslagsvalsen 1965. It looks as though the event had 23 stages/sections but only 3 were completed. Any ideas as to what event this was?

Any further rally information on Tom Trana will be very much apppreciated

Maybe this helps a little bit. You have to scroll down to page 26 of 37 (at least as of today; that may change if those statistics get updated).

Billbonney, note that the list from Norway is a mix of rally, racing, hillclimbs etc. And I doubt that it is a complete listing. When I checked a Norwegian driver that I know a lot about, I found that the list had missed most of that drivers results. And he was Norwegian!!

Tom Trana drove not only rallies, but a lot of other types of competition.

Thanks Tomas, yes I see it includes much more than rallies. Like you I saw straigthaway there were rallies missed. eg 1964 Hankirally which TT won, I am sure there are others. But the listing is still very much appreciated.

I am not a rally expert, but I happen to have a complete set of THE Swedish motor magazine from that time in my house right now. I'll scan through them for any Trana results. It may take a couple of days though ;)

I have dug into my piles of old magazines. Trana started competing in the Scandinavian fore-runner to rallies, the T-competitions (T=Tillförlitlighet or realiability). A type of competitions that looked more like the modern type of rally. T and orienteering was very popular in Scandinavia. But in the middle of the sixties the modern type of rallies started to take over the scene and for some years we had Swedish championships in both, with the same drivers competing.
You were looking for his Volvo results. What I have found he drove Fiat, Volvo, BMC-Cooper, Volvo and Saab. And did he go to Volvo again..?
And apart from that he drove Volvo in races both in Scandinavia and in the European championship and he even raced in Formula Junior.

Anyway, this is what I have found (Volvo rally results only) :

1967 Feb 24-25 Rally Bore S /? Volvo Amazon 2nd IC 3rd OA (OA92929) #59
1967 May 6 Smålandsrallyt S /? Volvo 2nd OA

BTW I think Roslagsvalsen was a T event. In 65 he retired after hitting a rock.

Many thanks to all of you,

I assume the 1965 KAK Rally took over from the Midnattssolen that ran in earlier years? Was this a change of organiser or was the event simply re-badged?

Did the 1970 Rallye Norge take over from the earlier Rallye Vinter or was it an additional rally?

Sorry for my ignorance.

Iteresting the flying Tom Trana story, I can recall several similar instances on UK events, its a devil of a job sometimes to recover the sticken vehicle. Explaining to the recovery crew, 'we have a car off, will need a suspended tow, but that is after you get it out of the trees'

The organizers for Svenska Rallyt was the same as for Midnattsolsrallyt - Kungliga Automobilklubben (the Royal Automobile club). Midnattsolsrallyt was from the beginning a real rally which went up into the north of Sweden with midnight sun in the middle of the summer.
When it was changed to a winter rally the old name didn't quite fit in...

Thanks Tomas, another new piece of new information as far as I am concerned.

Didn't the Midnattsolsrasllyt have stage that started deep in a coal mine?
Sadly, it seems the section of Dalby Forest that includes "Mikkola's Bend" (named after 69 RAC off, see above) is about to be lost to rallying to become a mountain biking centre. The true "revival" RAC ("The Roger Albert Clark Rally", not the half-baked "Lombard Revival") next month may be the last rally to use it.
"Famous rallying offs" could be in danger of becoming a thread on it's own?

Yes in the 1963 Midnattsolsrasllyt one of the special stages started in an iron ore mine about four levels down. Competitors drove along galleries and up inclined tunnels to the finish line on the surface. This was not a good event for Tom Trana who could only make 24th place, yet the return to more tradional stages in 1964 and 1965 brought him first place on these two events.

Nearly there as far as Tom Trana's rally exploits are concerned but still some gaps.

I understand he competed in the 1968 Gulf London Rally, his car was number 4? but I see from postings of the first 15 finishers he is not mentioned. Does anyone know if he finished the event and if so what was his final position?

I also have him starting the 1968 RAC Rally as car number 21, but again no idea if he finished the event or was classified?

He didn't finish the 68 RAC. Only 32 cars did, with the only two Saabs to finish being Lampinen and Orrenius in 1st and 2nd. (the top seed in the main RAC in 68 was No15, the cars in front of that were in a separate event for Gp5 and 6 cars the "European Cup Rally").
He was No.4 on the 68 Gulf but I too only have the first 15 finishers.

Trana retired from the 1968 Gulf Rally with clutch failure.

Thanks RS2000 and Darren Galpin, TT certainly enjoyed less success with Saab than when he was driving for Volvo.
