Agreed; super stuff. And is Jochen Rindt not using his friend Piers Courages's helmet?

If memory serves Rindt's 'skid lid' was silver with a black peak whilst Courage's helmet was light blue with black stripe.

It's the same helmet that he used for several races in 1969 - silver with a dark stripe. He used it at the German and Italian GPs, among others. By the time of his Watkins Glen win he'd switched back to the all-dark helmet.

I had been thinking that, as he had borrowed Piers' Eton-liveried helmet for a practice session at the French GP at Clermont-Ferrand that year, he may have borrowed it again. However, I note that the Oulton shot shows a dark peak.

A lot of work has gone on over the winter at Oulton with trees being cleared around the lake and Shell

Also a bar/picnic area has appeared at Deers Leap

An impressive entry of pre 90 cars considering the current financial climate. Post 89 wasn't bad either.

Taken 11 years after my last selection, 14th June 1986, here we have the 'elite' Northern press corps featuring 'cub' reporter P A R (Motoring News), Yorkshire's own Paul Boothroyd (Autosport Northern correspondent), and the scourge of Middlewich, Don Williamson (Colin Taylor Productions - so he said). Mr Rainford is just checking that he has the order correct for the first round at the Red Lion when practice is over.

Correct Mr Rainford. The car was later owned by Paul Hogarth but for some reason was nowhere near as quick as before, which is strange as Hogarth was a fairly fast driver. Even I could beat it!!

I qualified 15th and finished 13th :(

Blimey, I've managed to correct someone on TNF - that's a first :)

Mind you, it is one of my all time favorite Oulton regular competitors, up there with the (in)famous Dave Ellis Aston, and Malcolm Hamilton's fearson V12 E-type

1986- I had, by then, abandoned motor-racing when I rediscovered cycle racing; not quite a Reg Harris magnitude come-back but I did OK.
Seems like I missed some good stuff at Oulton. Keep these excellent shots coming please.

Is the red Elan an ex-Richard Jenvey car? Polaroof sponsored?

After a sabbatical Steve Cole started having fun again last season.
He sought out a Formula Ford he could actually squeeze into and acquired a Royale RP26 and now does the BRSCC Northern FF1600 Championship.

66 Duncan Shaw, 15 Paul Hogarth, 3 John Wood, 77 Hugh Mellor, ?, ? possibly Ian Slater, 44 yours truly... the dust in the background is I think from me having tried to go around the outside of Slater and sticking 2 wheels on the grass as he hadn't seen me ! Brian Anderson next up.

Nick Hammerton and Paul Longfield below.

I was lucky with that one as Brian Anderson and the others behind did a good job of missing the PRS going into Esso backwards. A big thump from the barriers was expected which fortunately didn't happen. I retired to the pits a few laps later - possibly for a change of underwear

Does anyone have an entry list for this event please? The results sheet would be helpful too, for an alternative.
Many thanks

This seems the most appropriate thread to raise this on. In his book, Tony Brooks refers more than once to "the Karussel" at Oulton; was this the hairpin now known [I think] as "Shell Oils Corner" and I believe also named "Esso" at one time.

Not the Gold Cup! Keegan's Arrows was sponsored by 'The Black Hole' for that race as seen in the previous post. It is probably taken at the June '79 meeting, also retired(accident).

Looking again at the photo, the paddock looks decidedly empty for such a big meeting. Perhaps a testing or practice day??

Could be the June one then. I was only 10 or 11 so I don't remember it too clearly. I'll check through my dad's collection of programmes next time I visit. Pretty sure it wasn't a test or practice day though
