An XK 120 competing as late as that! Or was it in an historic race?

The XK120 of John 'Plastic' Pearson was a formidable Modsports contender well into the '70s. That may well be him in the photo; his XK120 was red with a black hood. The experts will know.

How often do you see "2 VEV" taking part in a modsports race? Possibly Roger St John Hart??

I was a twelve year old amongst this lot, for my first F1 race & it changed the course of my life.
Sadly there's no place for ordinary folk to touch the action & atmosphere today

Steve / Graham, thanks for the photos. In this one (March 1972) I can see the transporter for F2 poleman David Purley, Niki Lauda's winning F2 March, the works F3 Marches of James Hunt and Brendan McInnerny, and the F3 Royales of Ian Ashley and Tom Pryce.

Mike Walker's Iberia Team Ensign running without the rear wing fins.? Did this happens because the circuits needed less down force or for some other reason?

Steve J, Simon A, Phil R & Tom A (if he can be interested). Further to our conversation on Saturday evening in the gathering gloom, I think the Ensign on the right is driven by Mo Harness :)

Oulton looked magnificent in the November sunshine yesterday and for the first time in 20 years the circuit was run in reverse

This led to some interesting driving and photo opportunites especially at Lodge :)

Great to see it - I gather that it has been recycled and I'm delighted to see that it follows in the style of the previous, and long-lamented, footbridge rather than some modern architect's 'take' on what a 21st-century bridge should look like. All it needs now is a large 'Motor' or 'Eagle Star' banner

Wonderful images, Steve - thank you.

This particular shot has had me thinking. Unless I am badly mistaken, Brise (leading) won just one race in the GRD, before switching to a March. He subsequently won the main championship, but only because there were double points on offer at the last round. Russell Wood, Hakan Dahlqvist (?!) and Mo Harness are following. I can also see Damien Magee, Richard Robarts, Lionel Friedrich, Johnny Gerber, Pedro Passadore, etc. Harness and Robarts also changed to March chassis and won races - the latter in quite some fashion I remember. He had also won in the GRD prior to that, I am certain. Great days.

I do Phil, I recall showing you it some time ago - I had it with me one day when I was working with you. On possibly the same occasion I collared one D Hill, who was watching one J Hill in his Ginetta I think.

A tad star struck, in keeping with Barry's description of me as a "rosy cheeked fourth former" I told Damon that his dad had been a favourite of mine and I'd watched him at Oulton as a nipper. Whipping out said photo, I asked Hill D to sign it which he duly did with a smile. Well, it was a pen actually but you know what I mean. I was pleased to shake Damon's hand and wish him and son Josh well for the future.

Looking back on our heroes who I've had similar short "chats" too, each and everyone has been great, right from when I was eleven all the way up to securing DSG's autograph for the first time at last year's Revival.

Top blokes.

Quite right MFD, incidentally what year was this?

I'm wondering if that's the back of my own left ear I'm looking at - the well turned out youngster on the right.

Pending a response from MFD, I would venture that it is the 1967 Gold Cup, when Jack wore this white helmet rather than his more usual silver or gold one.

Sorry Rob, Alan - didn't spot the Q. It's the 1968 Gold Cup meeting. One recollection of the meeting, was a development Alan Mann Escort entered for AN Other, who turned out to be Graham Hill

I'm reliably informed that it's not young Rob in the photo above, unless I was an underdeveloped 13 year old.

Phil, I found that I'd emailed you the photo of me in front of the Dunlop Bridge, check your inbox at work.

I am really enjoying this thread, as I was born and brought up within earshot of Oulton Park (mind you it was a lot noisier in those days..)

I can share some pretty grainy photos taken with my Kodak 110 (with zoom), from THE Motor Bridge in 1978:-

On 23/3/78, practice day for the Gold Cup, Stanley BRM P207. As a 15 year old I thought this was a proper F1 car, as it entered various Grand Prix the previous season. It made all the right noises and lots of it, and you could hear gear changes the whole way around the lap. I sat in the grandstand opposite the pits and timed all practice with my new Heuer stopwatch, with a surprising degree of accuracy (I used to keep copies of the timing sheets too, sadly lost).

Posted Image

On 24/6/78, race day for the second Oulton Round of the Aurora AFX F1 car races, assembly area with 8 cars there, Alo Lawler (Ralt RT1), Val Musetti (March 761), Emilo de Villota (McLaren M23), Guy Edwards (March 761S), Desire Wilson (Ensign MN04), Teddy Pilette (BRM P207), John Cooper (Hesketh 308C) and one other. Not sure what happened to the other 5 entries, suspect no shows, or I didn't wait for them to arrive here.

Loving the photos!

I have shots which were taken from ground level at almost the same time, if you had panned slightly right you would have caught a youthful self with instamatic in hand!

Just a pedants point Edward's car is a 781s and the Hesketh at the back is a 308E. Phil Rainford is right about the Mike Wilds Ralt.

I know my photos are from the same time as the BRM mechanic still has his hands in his pockets. Or was that just what BRM mechanics did all the time?

Great pic Smigel, the first time I've ever seen one of Alo's RT1. Missing cars from the assembly area include Mather's Chevron, and the 2nd Mopar March of Bruce Allison. Would there have been a 2nd Cooper car too?

.... and from the 1978 June Aurora F1 meeting:-

Alo Lawler in Assembly area, 24/6/78 [Bruce Allison's March 761S in front !] [Mr Lawler I found to be a very friendly and approachable person, I kept 'bumping into him' /getting in the way as an enthusiastic schoolboy at these and various other Libre meetings.]

Looks like there is an error in the programme regarding the #14 entry for Bob Evans it's definitely a Hesketh 308E not an earlier Hesketh 308C/Wolf Williams FW5.
