In the early hours of Nov 23rd, Friday morning, 0430 hrs to be precise, on Melbourne's ABC Channel 2, there is a showing of "Checkpoint" a 1956 movie starring Stanley Baker. In colour and filmed in Italy, it features Aston Martins (including 1955 Lagonda), Ferraris, Maserati's etc. According to the Google reviews it has a lame plot but plenty of action.

An accurate description I would say.I saw it when it originally apeared at the cinema.Filmed during the 1956 Mille Miglia plot required it to go into Switzerland though they never get that far!

Actually in the current climate of McLaren & Ferrari claiming that rival teams have been spying the plot of Checkpoint does have some relevance today!

It is well worth a look just to see the glorious Astons!

I think that I am correct in saying that the V12 Lagonda currently raced by Darren McWhirter features in the film.

We've covered this before but, the scenery, the footage of the cars, the cringeworthiness of Stanley Baker's performance and the wonderful, studied wickedness of James Robertson Justice make it worth recording for anyone who hasn't seen it before.

I punched in Checkpoint Stanley Baker to Google and at about the 8th or 9th entry down www.imcdb.org/movie_49065-.html there are numerous pics from the film including, as is said, Castellotti in the Mille Miglia.

The brief genuine race footage of Castellotti was if I recall correctly from years ago, extremely good quality despite the atrocious conditions.

Who took it and how much more of this stuff is still existent somewhere, because an awful lot of the regular period racing colour footage is not cinematic standard, whereas this fleeting glimpse was.

James Robertson Justice and Anthony Steele too, if memory serves. I recall a car colliding with the side of an arch as it passed through - be prepared to shout Fake! at the screen during the speeded up bits.
