I don't want to sound conceited, but I don't think there has been an actor or celebrity-turned-racecar driver that has made it as high up on the racecar circuit as I have.

Errmmm .... James Dean, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Dick Smothers .....

Even Jason Priestly and Shane Lynch have arguably made it further than a 27th place in Formula Three-and-a-half.

Never heard of him anyway. Is he more famous than John Pertwee?

Marty Robbins.

Could you actually call Slim Borgudd famous?

then there is one that I actually saw race at knockhill tooling around the back of the F3 pack rather than the back of FBMW - Ajit Kumar

Schumacher has some small parts in movies here and there, doesn't he?
He could technically be the most successful racing actor or actor racing ever too.
Another record!

He was half of the Smothers Brothers :p American comedy duo of the 1960s & 70s. And this Sebring link:

reminded me about Walter Cronkite, who was a pretty accomplished sports car driver too: René Dreyfus rated him highly in his autobiography. I don't think James Garner, Gene Hackman or James Brolin - also mentioned - were that good though.

It could also be Eddie Irvine. He plays the most important role in this epic movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337697/

One of the Carridine brothers, the one from the nerd films, was actualy fairly well thought of in IMSA circles in the mid 70's.

Being an actor in racing, one would think Muniz would be aware of Paul Newman's connection to racing, at least. Newman is probably one of the most famous/best actors in the world and is co-owner of the best team in Champ Car! Boy, he is even a partner in one of the teams of the series Muniz competed in last year...

I'm not sure how he did, but Patrick Dempsey just competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona.
