Gosh, no posts on this thread since July 2013. I shall remedy that with this pic from 24th May 1981 (32 years ago, no less) from Oulton and the MCD 200 Sports 2000 race

The Robin Smith/Laurence Jacobson Chevron B52 and the Mike Taylor Tiga

I CAN actually name the crowd in that shot Alan!

Here is another packed house at Lodge a few years earlier; I have been trying to find something out about the history of the leading car but not come up with anything much; I am particularly interested to know if it was built from a 26/R.

"Faute de Mieux", I was looking through this thread from the beginning last night. It's just superb, pics, stories, comments, reminisces! Any more photos from the 60s/70s/80s not yet posted?

Oh yes!! We're off again, thanks Alan. Bitter cold March 76, 1st ever G8 race, a new era begins, Eff Wun cars at Mallory - well a few entered anyway, including 2 TS16s...

The Wendy M pics are good Alan, who's the blond next to the car, looks interesting?? Lovely mid 70s Camaros, and no Malcolms in them, quite rare!

Pete, the Elan is the John Bury, Southport car, Steve W may know more.

Bring it on, lets go again!!!

Talking of Mallory Park.... I see that there are five confirmed dates for bike racing and a possible 128 days of activity at the circuit. Is anyone aware of possible dates for four-wheel action?

Here are a few to warm the cockles of Mallory Dan's heart. I will leave him to fill in the full grid from photo no.1

Excellent Alan. Are we to assume Richard Hawkins quallied his old RT1 on pole, or is he getting ready for a jump start in pic 1? At a guess behind him its Mallock, Dowsett, Alo, Fluxie, David Duffield and Colin Lees, then Kim perhaps?? Good sized crowd there too.

Good Friday 1981, Dan, hence the crowd. It is possible that the first pic is of the warm-up/green flag lap, as Hawkins was only fifth fastest, but I rarely snapped warm-up laps (and still don't) as I felt it was 'cheating' and often made the racing look closer than it was.

Here's how A.C.M. reported on the event in MN:

DESPITE the meagre entry, the prospects of a good Atlantic race looked promising with Alo Lawler's Ralt on pole and the similar RT4 of Ray Mallock, fastest in the morning warm-up. Lawler made a good start, but Ian Flux in the venerable Ehrlich and the Ralt RT1 of Richard Hawkins took off like the proverbial scalded cat, following the Irishman through Old Hall and down into Cascades. Mallock in contrast, made a tardy start, and finished the first lap behind Phil Dowsett's March.

While Lawler romped off into the distance, neither Flux nor Hawkins could do anything about it, and interest focused on the battle between Mallock and Dowsett which rapidly brought them into contact with the courageous Hawkins. Once by, both quickly pulled away and it was not long before Mallock passed Dowsett and began to haul in Flux, passing him too just before half-distance.

Mallock seemed to have no trouble catching up with Lawler but it was not until the latter tripped over a backmarker on the last lap that the Chamtex driver got his chance. Seizing it with both hands, Mallock went on to win by less than half a second while behind the unfortunate Lawler, Dowsett finally succeeded in depriving Flux of his hard-earned third place. Hawkins was similarly ill-rewarded with fifth while David Duffield's poorly handling Ralt never allowed the Scotsman to get on terms and he finished sixth, one lap in arrears. A.C.M.

Could Alan's photo perhaps then be of the first lap, with Lawler (and Flux?) already past?

That could well be the answer, Tim, as I explained I was unlikely to have snapped the warm-up lap.

Only eight starters are mentioned (and only four others were even entered) so if Lawler and Flux are already past, don't we have too many cars?

Hi All,

This reply is really aimed at Pressman, Mondiale M85S and Gregor Marshall.

You'll have to go back to late August Pressman but you posted a video of the Uniroyal ProdSports race in Oulton in '83 with a certain TR6 providing almost all the entertainment  http://uk.youtube.co...h?v=u8YRr-eMFRo

Well Mondiale M85S you were right, I'm Richard Morrant  and I was indeed (sort of) driving that day, and I did also enjoy a monster spin at Woodcote that seemed to go on for ever!

I know that I do have a sequence of black and white photos stashed away somewhere that show the spin right from the Gary Wright (Lotus 7) tap  to the tyre smoking finish a few hundred yards later; I'll post them as soon as I find them.

Some of the other drivers in that race were your Dad Gregor in the Lotus Esprit, Ian Jacobs in the tasteful green Jensen Healey with Gary White, John Stenning and Maynard Soares in the Lotus 7's.

Honestly I was truely taken aback that anyone would remember me at all, speechless, so thanks to you all and if you want to be bored I have a few pics and a couple of racing tales to pass on.

Great Skills with the TR6 :)

Wonderful.

Nilsson, Hoffmann (massively underrated), Perkins, Cheever, Ribeiro and South - as of course we all know.

Somebody is apparently writing a book about the last named.  Let's hope it does him justice.

Different manufacturers, drivers from all over the world, big grids, straightforward cars, races virtually every weekend...where did it all go wrong??

The Stephen South story is certainly an interesting one, which I feel would need input from Stephen himself to do it justice. Whether he's prepared to do that is another matter.

Darren Banks is the guy who is undertaking the biography and he posted on here very recently about it.

Hi,

Thanks for all the good wishes. I have spoken to John Stokes who has been a great help. I have Stephen's approval and he is helping with clarification of facts/events, a real bonus.

Will keep you updated on progress

In this shot, the only car facing in the right direction is the one behind no. 31. (Might be Tony Trevor?)

Silverstone, around 1980 perhaps? 31 looks like a Hawke DL19, 53 is a VD RF77 or 78, 29 is a VD RF79 or 80, can't make out the other 2. I'd say only the car above the Hawke drivers helmet is heading roughly the right way...

Good call Dan,

Yes, Woodcote corner on the club circuit. !980 (or possibly '79). Car behind the RF77 is also a RF77. Car behind the Hawke is a PRS, I pretty sure.

(Cars behind the PRS are a Land Rover & a Transit. Not sure why they were allowed to race....)   ;)

Definitely a PRS but I don't recognise the drivers helmet. The 53 VD looks like a Jim Russell car.

I think the second RF77 [not the JRRDS car] is Jeremy Fish. The RF79 is a Scorpion Race Hire car, and Cliff Sayer rings bells as the #31 Hawke

I am a (forgotten/unknown) Grand Daughter of Chris Meek, looking to find out more about his racing life and life in general...I can not seem to get much information from his family/friends and so have decided that asking motorsport fenatics (such as himself) is the best way to start as it seems that lots of people know him well or certainly did at the 'pinacle' of his career in racing...I hope! Can anybody offer me pictures, info...anything that may help me try and piece together some form of story....Please and Thank You x
