As a follicly challenged person, and very aware of issues of the rug, I can think of one former F1 team owner, who each year had a more modern and trendy rug (and glasses) which seem to defy the aging process; I even saw him boating in Sydney with said rug firmly in place - am I mistaken?

No you are not mistaken.

Some people talk about the 'sharks' involved in F1 others talk about the 'big wigs'

Ahem....

No.

Some time ago now (F3000 days, IIRC) one of his spannermen decided it would be a jape to direct an airline at the rug in question, which took-off in spectacular fashion as a result.

Shortly followed by the mechanic, who was fired on the spot...

I'm no lawyer, but surely that could've been taken to a tribunal? The case notes would have been hilarious.

Is this about Eddie J.? The teamowner who was in F1 for the fame and the money and not for the success?

Would have needed 2 years' continuous service at the time, IIRC.

Carl Hass? That's not his real hair? Just kiddin', that is the WORST looking rug I've ever seen! He spends more on his cigars! At least Eddie upgrade from his 1980 "horsehair wig" to really decent rug of late. I think Carl used the same guy as Howard Cossell.

Health and Safety issue, pointing and firing airlines directly at people is gross misconduct, instant dismissal. At Lotus we would use pop rivets in a piece of wiper cable tube to blow out the loudspeakers playing Worker's Playtime.

For several years I was lucky enough to go to the Jordan F1 GP team's Christmas party and I never knew about EJ's syrup!! I can't believe that Mr Irvine never pulled a prank about it?

There was an extremely strong rumour that the Irish "syrup" wearer sacked a driver who was caught wearing said "syrup" and doing a very bad impression, and this German (oh, what a give away) was informed by fax.

Also it was noticable at Goodwood, the when said Irishman drove one of his old cars, he always went into a motorhome to remove his crash helmet. I wonder why?!

I often chatted with him in various airports around the world, and even though I knew, I never really noticed. Nice bloke!

Motor racing personalities who wore/wear wigs:

Eddie Jordan
Bernie Ecclestone
Peter Broeker

Interestingly, all three were racing drivers first, and then all three became team bosses. :cat: Might be an idea to keep an eye on young M. Schumacher's hairline in future years...

I believe that is Bernie real hair. The only photo of Peter I could find he is shown semi-bald and about 45-55 years of age?

Ahh, so that's the reason Michael Schumacher was "kicked" after only one race... :rotfl:

I think Bernie's is real - someone as fastidious as him would never pay for a wig like that!

Would have been better for the Irishman, but it was a different German, the one the named German nicked the girlfriend of and married!

That story goes a long way in explaining why the German was fired in such a mean way, he can't take a joke.

If I wore one of those thing I would be totally paranoid. I would be thinking all the time "why are people looking at me that way?"

Well, a picture of Mr B C Ecclestone c. 1958, in one of the biographies done on him, shows him as having rapidly receded hair from the front. Therefore, there's no way that hair he has had for some while is real. Of course, I will never have the chance to prove this one way or the other..... :)

I don't know if David Holland can post images, but he has shown me a picture of Broeker with a god-awful wig. It makes Donald Trump's thatch look classy....

I've "examined" Bernie up close several times. He doesn't sport a rug, but rather a severe comb forward hair style to mask his light area in the front.

So like Donald Trump but from the back forwards?

I wonder if my late Dad would have been more successful with a syrup instead of a comb-over and big sidies!!

I think his competitors would have made it very embarassing for him. Can you imagine Lanfranchi seeing Gerry in a wig :)

If that's true, given the way he was receding in the 50s and 60s, and there's plenty of photographic evidence for this, he must be combing it from somewhere just above his collar.

I'm going to a lecture/presentation by Donald Trump here in Arizona on Feb. 23rd. I might sneak up on him with my camera for a close-up of his hair.

IF Bernie is wearing a rug it is a much different style to anything I've ever seen.

Has it not occurred to anyone that Bernie might have had a hair transplant? If Elton John can do it, so can Bernie.

Yes it had. I'd been trying to recall any time he was out of sight for an extended period during potential cultivation.

Fair point. Can anyone recall him wearing a hat over a certain period of time? Or would a hat bugger up the new growth process?
