I've never been to Cadwell, and if those barns have gone it is a great shame. Lovely photo, thanks.

Surely cars like that weren't actually meant to be driven like that? :)

I believe it is a natural characteristic of the FN which is chain driven, ie a set of 4 parallel, geared, chain-sets for its gearbox, and has no diff. as such. A photo or line drawing of the arrangement makes it clear IIRC.

Indeed, a solid back axle, so at least one of the rear tyres has to move at a different speed to the road surface when cornering. I think Barry was more concerned about the extreme cornering of an old, interesting car! At least it's not on beaded-edge tyres... No doubt AFN would have been pleased to see it, though!

Roger, if one looks at the James Allington cutaway od the FN "Shelsley" , it does have a diff, and the gearbox is actually housed in the hubs of each of the chain sprockets.
Each chain set actually has its own ratio,....I think

The following is an extract from Peter Giddings' excellent website which goes some way to explaining the attitude adopted by Mr Stretton's 'Nash. Peter, as many people here will know, is a very experienced, and successful, historic racer who has owned and raced some iconic cars, Frazer Nash included.

Wheel spin is virtually unknown in the differential-less Frazer Nash and a special technique has to be learned in order to slide the car through bends. Typically, bends are approached at very high speed indeed, most of the slowing down being effected by the scrubbing off speed "dirt track" style technique that has to be utilized.

It isn't a diff, Marc, just a bevel box, with two sprockets each side, driving four sprockets on the solid rear axle. The front sprockets are free to spin on their shaft untill a dog inbetween the sprockets, keyed to the shaft, is slid sideways to engage a sprocket. That sprocket then drives the back axle, on which all the sprockets are keyed and pinch-bolted. The Shelsley had a further short chain assembly and gear system to allow a reverse gear - my GN just has four forward speeds.

Thanks Alan. Just a pity they had to run silenced, the way of the 'better' modern world apparantly.

Opening post's definition of 'Historic Festivals'

there is plenty of interesting subject matter from events such as the old Christie's/Coys festivals, the Gooodwood FoS and Revival, the Old Timer GP, L'Age d'Or, Laguna Seca, Le Mans Classic etc...

That seems to have been broadened into any historic race meeting
And now we're getting rallies
Where will it end?

And now for something completely different:
I know that the Trossi Monaco (or Monaco Trossi?) car was at the FoS in 2007.
Does anybody have pictures of the car driving or was it only on static display?

Definitely static display only - I'd have really loved to see (and hear) it run.

Before the pedant complains ;) here is a shot from Aintree November 2004. My driver's pass describes the event as the Aintree FESTIVAL of Motorsport.
At the time we did not realise that this was the last time that cars would drive through Tatt's; I'm so glad that I took these shots; I've tried to be a bit arty-farty with the tilt and the Monochrome treatment. :smoking:

Distinctly remember Jacky Ickx coming third in the 1976 ROC at Brands with a split visor in this type of car numbered #20, last time i saw this type of Wolf Williams in action was when Art Mezzarrio was pedalling it around the Nurburgring also in 1976.

I think your memory has failed you, as that particular Bell wasn't introduced until 1978.

Ickx was indeed an early-user of the twin eyeport/window - certainly not 'split visor' - when it became available, but the earliest appearance I can recall is 1978...
