JPM? Ralf? Coulthard (finally ;) )? Kimi? Button? Alonso?

Id say only 2 of then have a real chance. Kimi and Jpm and myabe Ralf. The rest are just too funny to serious. Alonso (Lets watch him drive for a real team first before we say he is WDC material). DC he says it everyyear. Button = BAR = Honda (and if Honda doesnt come to the party then neither will he).

Ross Brawn.

Once MS leaves Ross will climb in the unbeatable Byrnemobile, make his own race decisions, and show the world anyone could win in the Ferrari. After all the drivers aren't very important parts of the F1 puzzle these days according to all the fans of the drivers who aren't winning.

Yes I know, but he knows how to put together a win (when he is in the mood).
He just needs to work on his mental strength.
As long as he learns to fight the psychological pressures of an obnoxious teamate, and has a good BMW propelling him towards win, he can do it after his bro leaves. :up:

Fisichella - this is predicated on Michael winning the WDC next year, then retiring in 2004, and Fisi joining him in Ferrari to win the title in 2004 or 2005.
I think Fisi has the talent, given the right car, he can do it. Of course, time is running out - Fisi will be 31 in 2004.

I agree, somewhat like Piquet and Mansell in '87. The faster allways DNF and the more consistent winning in the end, but I fear it'll be MS next year who'll want the crown.

Since their chance might only come in 2007, there is no guarentee that Williams or McLaren will still be top teams.

If Barrichelo stays after Schumi - then it will be Barrichelo.
Otherwise it will be Kimi or JPM.

Offcourse, if Alonso or Fisichella take MS's place at ferreri, then they could have a shot at the title too. It all depends on who replaces MS (and Rubens)

I think there is a chance that one or other will be there. If you look at recent history ( the intervening period between Ferrari's WDC for Scheckter in '79 and MS in 2000) with the exception of 2 WDC for Piquet in a Brabham and 2 for Schui in a Benetton (Brawn/Byrne mobile) every other World Drivers Champion has been driving a McLaren or a Williams. Engines and personal etc have changed/evolved but Frank Patrick and Ron are still at their respective helms and are unlikely to forget how to be successful. Kind of makes you wonder what all these manufacturer owned teams are going to do short of following the Ferrari route and hiring Brawn/Byrne and MS

Sure, and that person will win the WDC once unless he is the equal or better of the car.

The top 10 drivers in F1 are ALL equal or better than their cars. Given the best car, they will be winning. When Hill had the best car, he won. When Schumi had the best car he won. When Mika had the best car, he won. Why didn't one of them win all the time???? would Schumacher win the title in Fisichella's Jordan or Massa' Sauber? no. Would Fisichella or Heidfeld win the title with an F1-2002 and the same attention Schumacher gets from the team? most likely (Rubens would win also, he he had the attention Schumacher has).

I think what you are saying is that the parity between drivers is greater than the parity between cars, or that the driver's relative contribuition to the system is not so great that he can overcome a significant disparity in another component.

For the most part, I agree. Give Coulthard another 40 reliable horsepower and he'll kick Schumi's tail all over every track, though Schumi is a clearly superior driver.

Thus, returning to the original post, the answer to the question depends mostly on who will be driving for Ferrari, McLaren or Williams over the next few years, and which of those 3 teams will have the best car (Nobody's buying the idea that Jag, BAR or Renault will suddenly break into the lead).

There is a total of 6 candidates (the two drivers for each team). Assuming McLaren and Williams keep the same drivers, KR and JPM are the likely candidates from those teams simply because they are consistently faster than their teammates and are fast learing how to drive an F1 race. As for Ferrari, the only question is who will succeed MS. If Ferrari picks up a real hot shot youngster, Barrichello will find that he is the next DC--doomed to forever come in second. If Ferrari picks up the next McNish instead, then Ruebens is the Ferrari candidate for WDC.

Who will have the best car of the three? My chrystal ball is not that clear.

Not Rubens, I fear. If he was good enough to be WDC, he would have taken 2nd places to Michael on a regular basis (DNFs permitting) - yet Coulthard beat him in the WDC standings last year. Even strapped into the #1 Ferrari, I don't think he could do it with a rampant post-Schumacher grid eager to assert itself.

Montoya - yes, of course he will. His first WDC is as inevitable as Senna's or Schumacher's were.

Who else? I still think Villeneuve could win again IF (and it's a very big IF) BAR and Honda can both get their act together, but time is running out for him. Coulthard is (despite all the nay-sayers) a possible, but only if McLaren can give him a decent car - I think he now has the experience to win a WDC, but again his time is running out fast. Heidfeld may be WDC material, but obviously not while he is at Sauber. Given the right move into a good car, he could do the business. The only other candidate currently in F1 may be Kimi, again if McLaren or some other future team can give him a competitive car. But he has to build up his experience and race-craft and of course start winning some races before he will be a credible contender.

I had high hopes for Sato, but his days in F1 look numbered, so I don't know if he will ever have a WDC opportunity. A pity, as I think he has the potential to be an exciting and charismatic champion. I also had hopes of Pizzonia but I have to say that I am losing faith in him. Another candidate not yet in F1 is Giorgio Pantano, who I am starting to like the look of - a real gutsy racer who gets results. Put him down for a WDC in 4 or 5 years time maybe?

Barrichello, Ralf, Coulthard, JPM, Raikonen and the guy that joins Ferrari when Michael retires, and only if everybody stays where he is right now.

If Schumacher stays another three years and wins the WDC every year, the then first driver of Toyota might have a chance: Toyota is the only team that can bankroll the amount of money that is needed to conquer Ferrari.

If williams gets a grip on them selves than it will be JPM. No doubt about that. In equal or near equal cars he will blow both Ralf and Kimi of the face of the earth.

presumably not with Damon as co pilot......

Would have to agree with Montoya, I see him at the point now where Senna was with Lotus and MS in 92-93 with Benetton...even while they were just winning a race or two you knew they were just waiting for the opportunity

Ok, I accept Jacques could, but I have serious doubts BAR will make it before he is too old, probably Toyota will make it sooner, so truly there are only five candidates left after shumi leave, Rubens, JPM and Ralf and surely Kimmi and DC. there will be great battles between all of them like in the good all times. they all can and sure in two years there will be a couple more names to add.
