Barry Sheene has passed away...

Remembering happier times, someone already mentioned the famous incident when he gave two fingers to Kenny Roberts Snr after passing him through Copse at Silverstone. I always remember Murray Walker's comment to the effect that Barry had the cheek to "wave" at Kenny:)
I always wondered if Murray really did think he was waving!

so bloody sad - but just look at them...what ever grand old age us mortals reach I suspect that, to a man, we would gladly swap our score to have experienced the rollercoaster of Barry's 52 or James' 45 years.

Dick and Barry did TV ads together, and one became pretty well known. They were set in a service station and Barry was raiding the 'Shell Shop' as Dick was trying to pay for whatever he picked up. Barry would keep saying, "...and one of these, and one of these..." as Dick became more and more frustrated with it all. Obviously they were demonstrating the wide range of goodies available in the Shell Shops.
Anyway, it came to a point where Barry paused for breath, and Dick said, "Anything else, Barry, maybe a sock?"
It was very well put over, even though you don't normally expect to see a racing driver go to a servo in his driving suit. Later, during a Bathurst telecast, disc jockey cum joker Doug Mulray was doing a skit part that filled a little time between the early morning beginning and the start of the race. He went on a televised inspection of the garbage bins behind the various competitors' pits.
At the Johnson bin he reached in and pulled out... a sock!
For those who haven't realised yet, or whose native language doesn't relate to the common expression 'put a sock in it', this was a means of telling Barry to shut up.

I wrote to the operators of the Barry Sheene website to pay my respects and to tell them of the nice memoriam underway here in TNF.
I have just received this reply:
Richard,
Thank you for your kind words. I will be sure to pass them onto the family. I just thought I would inform you that for all Barry fans we are putting together a tribute......

And continuing Ray's TV theme ISTR that in the mid-90s there was a storyline in "Neighbours" which included some racing (or at least testing somewhere) and featured Bazza as himself. (NO - I'm not a Neighbours fan, but my ex-wife watched it!)

I don't think I saw it, never watch Neighbours nor is it watched in my home, but I think somebody bounced across it while changing channels. Didn't know Barry was involved...
There was a prompt for RPM, or I think it was RPM where Barry was heard saying "...that's a major, major, major shunt..." over some poor competitor biting the dust somewhere.

Yes, I remember that one! What a laugh!
I think what endeared Barry to us Aussies was that he was happy to send himself up (laugh at himself) which is a natural past time here. He was certainly a colourful commentator and was forthright with his opinion - whether you agreed with it or not. He will be missed.

Even today in our house, the standard reply to "Need anything from the shop?" is.....
"Yeah, a sock."
RIP.

Barry is still in our thoughts ,below is an artical about the first winner of the BARRY SHEENE MEDAL.
________________________________________-
The inaugural Barry Sheene medal was presented to newly crowned V8 Supercar Series champion Marcos Ambrose at the official championship awards ceremony.
Following on from the spectacular, high-profile conclusion to the 2003 series at Eastern Creek Raceway on Sunday, the who's who of the Australian motorsport industry gathered for the presentation of the annual awards, held at the Westin Hotel in Sydney.
Ambrose's Stone Brothers Racing team topped off a fantastic season by taking home six awards, including that for champion team, and the prestigious Barry Sheene medal, awarded for the first time by the media, who voted after each round of the series, awarding points for outstanding leadership, sportsmanship, fan appeal and personality.
AVESCO Chairman Tony Cochrane said that the award was a fitting tribute to the former 500cc motorcycling world champion, who moved to Australia's Gold Coast and became a popular member of the Australian racing scene in his role as commentator and advisor.
"Barry Sheene was a highly valued supporter and contributor to the V8 Supercar family, who himself had an extremely successful career," Cochrane said before the award was handed to Ambrose, "It seemed logical and right to name an award in his honour that represented all that he was - I don't think Barry could have come up with a more fitting winner who truly shows all the great qualities the medal represents."
