I've already mentioned it another thread, but the "Rising Sun" at Fawkham Green (Brands Hatch) was always the scene of good crack on race weekends.

I seem to remember a bar just outside the gates of Indy called Turn Left Tavern.
Never went in there... as I would have been scared off by the local servers clad in lingerie.

Jumping continents now...

Eariler this year I stumbled across a great little alfresco bar just down the road from the Circuit de Cataluñya. Lots of racing banter going on there...usually ending up in fist fights or other forms of argy bargy

Also,...What is the name of the pub where Nigel Roebuck drinks in Dorking?

Great topic...
Wish i could think of more.

The Interlaken Inn is down the road from Lime Rock. For years & years, the IMSA or other large sports car race was on Memorial Day Monday. Since there was no action on Sunday, and most of the participants stayed in the Inn, a large group of us would get together and watch the Indy 500. I once tried to get the Ferrari factory mechanics to adjust my carbs, but no luck.

For Mike Hawthorn we have

The Barley Mow, Tilford
The Duke of Cambridge, Farnham
The Bush, Farnham
The Sally Lunn Restaurant, Bagshot
The Bricklayer’s Arms, Midhurst
The Spread Eagle Hotel, Midhurst
The Frensham Ponds Hotel, Rowledge?
The Bluebell, Rowledge?
The Star, Belgrave Square, London
The Talbot Hotel, Ripley
The Duke of Cumberland, Henley on the Hill
Hotel Albergo Reale, Modena
Auberge de la Garenne, Reims

and for Peter Collins

The Black Boy, Bewdley
L’Etoile, Paris
L’Action Automobile, Avenue d’Iena, Paris
Hotel Miami, Rue des Acacias, Paris
Fred Payne’s Bar, Rue Pigalle, Paris
The Old Inn, Crawfordsburn, Northern Ireland
The Angel Hotel, Bourne

Are any of these still in existence and worth visiting?

The Black Boy is certainly still there - the houses next to it are what remains of my old primary school. In fact there are two Black Boys in Bewdley - this posh hotel one (sorry - farm labourer's son) and a tiny black and white cottagey thingy on Wyre Hill over the river (where we used to go lots in the first years of the 1980s when old enough to drink without being arrested).

Another pub worth pointing out for Peter Collins connections is the Bellman's Inn at Shatterford - if you walk out of Peter's old front door at Shatterford Grange (without upsetting whoever lives there now), cross the road and walk up the hill for a couple of hundred yards, you're there. As my father was forty years ago last Tuesday when I arrived into the world - he was working on a farm at Trimpley at the time and this was the nearest place with a phone (not allowed in "the Big House")...he says.

The Barley Mow and the Talbot are still going strong and very good they are.

Mon Ami Mate should have mentioned the Dog & Pheasant at Brook though - Hawthorn's signature is supposed to be on the ceiling with the others (he was tall enough!) but I couldn't see it!

I've never been to Switzerland, but a post on another forum led me to the Race-Inn at Rogwill. This is a mural artist's home page - just follow the links, especially the Jo Siffert ones. Note that the first "Oldiebar" link seems to be broken, while the second appears to be a picture based on pure fantasy. Nevertheless, looks like a nice place to enjoy a pint or three ....

Not quite...

Clark's first appearance at Longford was 1965... the 1964 race was won by Graham Hill in the old Scuderia Veloce Brabham with McLaren, Brabham and Mayer the other International competitors, Hulme didn't do the complete series for some reason. And Mayer, sadly, wasn't in the race either.

In South Australia there have been a couple of Motor Racing inspired pubs. First of all in the late 1980's there was "The Circuit" which was on East Terrace, just down from Stag Corner. This was one of the very early sports bars, but underwent a change to a more generic sports bar after a couple of years. I think it is an Oyster Bar now.

Opened in Salisbury last year, there is now the "V8 Superbar" which is a V8 Supercar themed bar which has heaps of V8 memorabilia, sells a pretty good range of V8 team merchandise, and features a full sized Ford Falcon simulator.

Whilst not a "pub" as such, back in the 1980's there was also a restaurant in Tea Tree Gully called "Minardi Ristorante", and there was a lot of Minardi (and General F1) memorabilia in there whilst it was open. At one stage rumour had it that one of the restaurant's chefs used to work for Minardi but I do not know if there was any truth in it or not.

Hi Karen,

Whats the name of the pub just off the Kingsway in South Melbourne ....."Bells" in the name?? Definately caters for Off-fish-shan-ardos.... :D

In the General Motors Building. A fairly corporate place with race cars hanging from the ceiling and faux crash helmet decor.

There have been conversations for years about opening a "racing theme" restaurant in Indy but nothing has come of it, though there are several places like Union Jack's not far from the Speedway that feature a fine collection of memorabilia. And the Speedway's "Flag Room" grill in, as it was formerly known, the Speedway Motel and now the Brickyard Inn, routinely draws imbibers and The Involved at all times; this place was featured in "Winning" though the smallish layout has been redone since then. Where else might you walk past the Marmon Wasp on entering?

A dumpy quasi-strip joint and cheap beer place called the White Front just down the street from the Speedway was for years a famous hangout for drivers, where they gathered when the nicer places asked them to leave.

Well he has spoken of meeting Peter a few times round and about - though he certainly doesn't claim to have been a close friend. On occasion it may even have been in the Bellman's, though Dad wasn't working in that area in the fifties - he worked for Sir Edward Thompson at Gatacre Park near Bridgnorth then.

Dad and his mates used to all be bike riders - couldn't afford cars - and I remember him speaking of one particular occasion when Peter walked into whatever pub it was and just started chatting with them - didn't know them from Adam - as he'd seen the machines outside and just wanted a natter about them. No idea when this was, but probably the first half of the fifties I suppose. A very likeable bloke indeed, by all accounts.

On a connected note; I assume the Bush at Farnham is still going? In the spring of '93 I was sent on a residential course from work and that's the hotel where we stayed. Very nice.

Finally, on a completely off thread note; if you come out of Shatterford Grange and head away from the Bellman's, down the Bridgnorth road, after five miles or so you come to a round house on the left. This used to be the Fenn Green Garage, proprietor one Alan Rollinson.

Stan Chapmans pub must rate a mention if only because of the high percentage of the early Tottenham Lane Lotus employees paypackets that found their way back into the Chapman families coffers ! It also gave the opportunity to use a decent loo at lunchtime too instead of trecking across to the railway truck repair sheds toilet!

Le Chanteclair was a very good restaurant in Manhattan. Rene, and his brother Maurice, were wonderful hosts. I was fortunate to have dined there on many occasion in the late 1970's prior to the closing in 1979.

As a stripling just out of college, I was working on a project on Long Island that required me to visit N.Y.C. two or three times per month which allowed for a visit to Le Chanteclair on my way in and again on my way home. It did not take long to figure out that the best time to visit Le Chanteclair was during the early afternoon, just after the lunch rush as Rene and Maurice were not so busy at that hour and I was able to get to know the both of them very well.

They served excellent food, and Maurice managed a premier selection of fine wines. Rene always took the occasion to introduce me to many of racing luminaries that were also dining there, as he always seem to take great pleasure in his young friend from Virginia who asked so many questions and who listened to his many wonderful stories.

On one occasion, Rene and Maurice informed me that they were closing the restaurant as they wished to retire and take life a bit easier. While saddened by their news, I was very pleased for the both of them.

During my final visit there, they presented me with one of the famous ashtrays that each had signed and dated on the back. Now a cherished memento of a time long passed, it has a place of honor on my bar but is never used.

What I wouldn' t give today to have one of their Bugatti water pitchers, which by the time of their closing, there were only but a few remaining.

Years later while living in France, I took the occasion to visit many places that Rene and Maurice had told me about in their stories at Le Chanteclair. They were in my thoughts many times during my years in France.

Peter, thanks so much for reminding me of these charming gentlemen as I had not thought of them in far too long a time.

I broke my ashtray.

And never screwed up enough courage to pocket one of the Bugatti water pitchers, as it's absence on the bar would have been noticed and I might have become unwelcome.

Names escape me now after a few years on the other side of the world but there was/is a pub at Addlestone across the canalfrom the old MRD/RALT factory that in its time must have seen many a racing personality when Ron wasnt keeping an eye out. Similarly the pub in Byfleet were I understand the Japanese mechanics/engineers in the 1 litre f2 days were billeted. many racing people still frequent them as i met both Phil Reed and Mike Thackwell amongst others. The Barley Mow was of course the place to reminise (sp)

on the OT of FF im disapointed to hear of the way this has developed. In my last year of my involvement in FF, a Zetec FF top seat was certainly in the 100 pound plus catagory and the writing was on the wall when FR arrived. The cost of FF (Zetec) was way to high but whilever there were dads with more money than sense to get young Jonny to drive a racing car rather than have the ability to be a racing driver it was ok..........what seems to have happened is the expected implosion.

This is a nice thread, and probably some material for future articles...

Some of the "places to be" near circuits I have been to:

- "Pistenklause" in Nürburg at the Nürburgring. Hundreds of autographs and photographs on the walls and ceiling. Run by Fam. Schmitz, daughter Sabine Schmitz is the driver of the "Ring-Taxi", a BMW M5. They have good beer and good food, mainly Italian cuisine. And it's a hotel, too.

- The bar at the Dorint hotel at the Nürburgring, although it is a bit clean. With the right people, it still can be fun.

- Gasthof "Zum Wilden Schwein" in Adenau near the Nürburgring. Loads of black- and white photos on the walls, nice stories from the landlord about motor racing from days gone by.

- Restaurant "Bella Capri" in the centre of Hockenheim. No motor racing memorabilia to speak of, but one of the best Italian restaurants I know in Germany, and during race meetings, half of the paddock can be found there.

- Hotel "Walkershof" in Reilingen near Hockenheim. Not cheap, but one of my favourite places to stay near a circuit. A nice display in the hall with scale models, helmets, autographs etc. Barman Peter knows many stories, and at the right time, you can find anyone who is anyone in (German) motor sport in the bar of the hotel.

- The paddock restaurant at the Salzburgring. Autographs, bodywork parts. They have a nice terrace and serve a very good Wiener Schnitzel. And, of course, draught beer.

- "Schönbergerhof" at the Österreichring. Having lunch at the terrace with view of almost the entire circuit is excellent. But I assume it is very quiet there now, with nothing going on at the track.

- "Montana" in Maranello, near the Fiorano test track. This is the inofficial restaurant of the Ferrari factory. Photographs, helmets, autographs of nearly every Ferrari driver since the 1960s, Rosella is serving excellent Italian food. Much cheaper and much, much better than "Cavallino" across the road from the factory, which is where all the tourists go...

- "Dall'Ava" in San Romolo, up the hill from San Remo. A "must" for rally fans. Loads of photographs, autographs - but for how long, as the San Remo Rally is gone?

And while reporting about NASCAR-races, I have also been to a place called "Sandwich Construction" near Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte (Concord). It had NASCAR-cars on the roof and everything from sheet metal to overalls and from helmets to autographs inside, but I think it was closed a few years ago.

Bonjour Rene,

Here in Australia we joke about how nice it would be to marry a girl who's father owns a pub!!

To also have a Motor racing connection would be the icing on the cake!!

So........please introduce me to Sabine!! :drunk:

PS does Pistenklause mean piston broke?

Sabine is something of a legend - or rather an idol - among the regular Nurburgring enthusiasts, epsecailly the male ones. She would, indeed, be a fine catch (although I believe already catered for in that way) being good company, a great character, rather a "looker" and one heck of a driver. Not averse to putting on a bit more of a show in the 'taxi' if you had a little Ring or track experience (just to put you in your place, you understand...). There are tales of her pretending to touch up her make-up whilst drifting through Brunnchen and the like.

Last year I and a bunch of friends and Sabine had the curious pleasue of a lap of the Nordschleife in a huge and hideously vulgar stretched limosuine (I'm sure I've related this before though) complete with mirrored headlining, hollywood lights, zebra-print sofas, champagne - the works. Quite bizarre. (The limo hire chauffeur had no idea what he was in for - he thought he was to take a couple to a wedding, rather than spending the morning lapping the Ring!).

Until recently, Sabine ran a bar called "Fuchsrörhe" (naturally) in Nurburg, which became a regular watering hole for visiting Ring-nuts.

"The WHITE HART" was the name of it cant remember the other one YET.I guess i spent a few quid in that place. Now that canal sure could tell a few stories. In the summer of 1976 it dryed out so much that you could see metal parts sticking up in the mud. Thank god Ron never found them he would have given us another lecture ;)
For those that don't know the layout the driveway into the Rat Factory was quite long and it ran parallel to this canal ,we used to speed down it and into the car park and one day some one nearly cleaned up a few cars with a hand brake park, much to Ron dislike he got speed bumps put in to slow us down.(a bit)
Then on another day we had a young chap named Graeme Fuller who raced a kart he brought it in
so we could go to Blackbush in the afternoon. Old RON spotted it and wanted a go ,we gave him a push start it fired up he hit the 1st speed bump full throttle and of course took off into the air came down went sideways and into a fence Blood Funny :rotfl: .

In 'All But My Life', Sir Stirling laments no more nights at the Richmond Arms. The Richomd Arms still exists as an adjunct to the Goodwood Marriott Hotel and what passes as a public bar (passing trade is not encouraged) is decked with photgraphs of the Greatest Racing Driver Of All, and also pictures of Lester Piggott.

Hawthorn's list of pubs means that he drove back to the Guildford area via Midhurst. The alternative cross-country route, the one I prefer, is via Petworth on the A259. Racing people who went via Petworth got tanked up in the pubs in Northchapel, like The Swan and The Talbot In the interest of historical reseach, I have visited both and can report that they are pleasant, but neither is outstanding.

The Spread Eagle Hotel at Midhurst used to be Aston Martin's HQ for races at Goodwood. A barman at the Spread Eagle once called 'Time' and, for his trouble was wrapped up in a carpet while the Astom Martin team raided the bar, though I believe they left the money and a tip. What fun we had back then! All those rich, thirsty, bastards thought it a great wheeze to wrap a prole in a carpet. Nobody thought that the barman might have had a family to go home to.

The seven stars of the badge of the Scirocco F1 team was because its headquarters was behind the Seven Stars pub in the Goldhawk Road, London.

I hope you feel better for knowing that,

..whilst stumbling out of the Seven Stars you would virtually trip over a sports car garage of some repute. This garage used to own and run an ex- Le Mans challenger, a car that itself had been conceived and built no more than a mile down the road in Shepherds Bush..suggestions ?

I'm seriously bothered by the fact that I have an intimate knowledge of so many of the pubs in this Thread.. :drunk:

Nearly there. The ADA TR8 was initially built in a small workshop off the Uxbridge Rd, Shepherds Bush (I lived around the corner and watched with interest).

After the abortive Le Mans campaign the TR8 was sold on to the British Sportscar Centre in Goldhawk Rd.

ADA then got serious at Le Mans with the ADA 01 Cossie and then the Gebhardt Gp C2 cars ...

..and just cross threading slightly to our Tony Lanfranchi tribute.

If the Brands Hatch management choose to dedicate a watering hole to his memory (and I guess it would need to have the inevitable "Lanfranchis" label ) could they please make it a suitable building.

Every time it gets too wet in that lower paddock I seek refuge in the tatty Portakabin that bears the title "Hailwoods". Slabs of cardboard on the floor to soak up the damp, a vending machine that robs you of money, dubious beer in plastic glasses and a selection of burnt food on Griffin-style frangible plates. I suspect Mike would have had a very rude name for this place....

Not quite a pub but an interesting concrete and glass circular building with triangular rooms (disliked by many now but really a rather splendid 60's icon....) is Fossati's in Canonica Lambro spitting disance of the Monza circuit.

A hangout of the famous during gran prix week, the bar is full of motoring photos, signatures annd momentos. I believe Fossati was an Alfa works driver in 50's+ in Giuliettas. It takes time to get to know them...

OT but another family member (brother?) runs a superb restaurant down the hill but recent inclusion in good food guides detracts.

Note that the first "Oldiebar" link seems to be broken, while the second appears to be a picture based on pure fantasy. Nevertheless, looks like a nice place to enjoy a pint or three ....

We have two Roggwils here in Switzerland, one in Kanton Thurgau on the Bodensee (Lake Constance) and one in Kanton Bern. The photo from the bar in the "Race-Inn" sems to show the lake in the background, so I am presuming it is the Roggwil in Thurgau. Next time I am in the area, I promise to check it out.

A few years ago I managed to get lost in Lugano on a very rainy night (a difficult job that - to get lost in Lugano - I had a lot on my mind) and I drove past an establishment named the "Clay Bar." Now, I am presuming this has to have some connection with Signor Regazzoni, but I had no time to stop just then.

Despite frequent subsequent visits to Lugano, I have never been able to find the place again. Anyone know anything about it?

Well, back off topic for just a second... I guess I may well have met you at some point them, Mark - but I'm not great at matching names and faces in my memory - ( are you based anywhere near London? There's a possible 'Ringers' beer&curry meeting being planned for the end of the month...)

(Sorry everyone)

OT but another family member (brother?) runs a superb restaurant down the hill but recent inclusion in good food guides detracts.

I stayed in the Fossati for the '91 Monza GP. I had painted a picture commissioned by Benetton which was to be presented to Piquet to commemorate his 200th GP start. So they put me up in the
Fossati.
Did seem a bit weird coming out of my hotel room to almost bump into Ayrton Senna and to see so many well known faces at breakfast, or in the restaurant down the hill in the evening.
The weekend at Benetton was a bit fraught with the Schumacher-Moreno-Jordan affair and the marketing guys wondering if anyone would actually turn up at Piquet's party as everyone in the paddock were shocked at the way Moreno had been treated.

I believe that is/was Clay's place, and at one point had a BRM on the wall or ceiling!

The place connected with Regga, in 1973 at least, was known as...

Posted Image

I vividly remember a promo shot which showed Regga sittting in a lounge chair outdside the place, next to a 'life-sized' side-on shot of him in the P160. It was a 3-part poster, and - through my contacts (I was 16!) at Marlboro - I tried really hard to get myself a copy. Sadly, I failed...

I have a nice memory concerning this particular sticker. At the final round of the 1973 Rothmans F5000 Championship, I was fortunate enough to be given refuge in the Servis/Alan Brodie transporter - thereby allowing me to be there for the whole weekend.

One of the highlights of that meeting was the entry of Clay in a Lola T330 entered by Jones-Eisart Racing. Despite his already-announced return to Ferrari by this stage of proceedings, Regga was - to my mind, anyway - still a BRM driver! So, when I crossed his path in the paddock not that long before the F5000 race, I asked him politely if he had any stickers. He told me that he did, and if I came and found him after the race he'd sort me out.

Yeah, right... Like you'll remember me after however many laps the race distance was run! So, I figured, I'll call his bluff...

My target duly appeared on the radar roughly an hour after the end of the race, so I made a b-line for him. "Excuse me, Mr Regazzoni; you said I should come and see you after the race for some stickers". "Ah yes - come with me" was his reply, to my complete and utter astonishment!

So I followed Mr BRM Driver all the way down the hill in the paddock to where, it transpired, he'd parked his hire car. A Ford Cortina (Taunus) no less...! He duly opened the boot, got out his briefcase and gave me a few of the pub ones as well as some MWCT 'Clay Regazzoni' beauties.

I was blown away! And he, in return, got a fan for life...

Mark, I know that ADA did move base at or about the time that they graduated to C2 so you might well be right. Most sources still listed them as a "West London" team and I guess this might have included Brentford !

I only saw the TR8 at the Shepherds Bush works (was it "Willow Grove"?), the garage was squeezed between terraced houses in a very residential area and not the kind of place to launch a Le Mans project. For light relief QPR played around the corner.

ADA 01 was a sort of de Cadenet with a toupee but by the time ADA got hold of the Gebhardts they were serious motor racers..

Sandwich Construction Company did change hands a few years back. Kept most of the decor, mostly NASCAR oriented, we found ourselves there after working the SCCA road racing events at CHARLOTTE Motor Speedway (sorry Lowes). The pints were usually properly poured...

Must add Hurley's Irish Pub on Crescent in Montreal. Granted, there's enough distractions in the area it took us a couple of years to stumble downhill far enough to find it, but once we did it's been a keeper. Even if this year's GP didn't happen we were still going to use our 2003 purchased plane tickets (from South Carolina) to go anyway. Proper beverages, good food, great service. The out-of-town/country flaggers had our pre-GP dinner there this year with far far better results than at previous locales.

Awesome thread!

Cheers!

Thank you Stuart.

I am not sure when I will be next in Lugano (however, it is such a beautiful place that I will take anything as an excuse to go there anyway), but I will definitely check to see if the bar is still there.

In which case, they probably enjoyed the fare at The Crown & Sceptre (Fullers pub) just round the corner ;)

Crappy pic, I know, but you can just make out the Clay's Pub sticker on the side of his helmet - covering the Marlboro BRM one...
