Hi Ted,

Can't figure out what the "other site" is.
Could you please be a bit more specific?
Thanks in advance.

This is aimed at Carlos
Carlos, what do you know of the plans for a 'round the streets' races in July at Porto??
I am thinking of racing my Lotus 18FJ there.
Any comments.

Where would be the best place to stay, bearing in mind the need to park car & trailer in a safe spot.

I would welcome your views please

Hello Kevin,

Since a FIA Lurani Formula Junior race is on the schedule, may I suggest that you should join the event through the series promoters.
They will have their own paddock allocation, hence safe car & trailer parking will be resolved.

There have been also announced races for GP cars of the 30's, HGPCA 50's and 60's, Sportscars 50's and 60's, Gentleman Drivers GT Endurance, GT Cars up to 1964, Gentleman Drivers Sports Challenge, Sports Prototypes up to 1964, the national Datsun 1200 Trophy, Touring, GT & Sports Classics and Super Sports Cars.

Only a part of the original Avenida da Boavista and of Estrada da CircunvalaĆ§Ć£o will be used on the Revival.
Porto has very good hotels and accomodation and nearly all have their own homepages and email, so it must quite easy to choose.

See you there next July 8-10.

Kind regards

HI

Even if I am very sad that they intend to use a circuit that has nothing (relevant) to do with the original 1950 to 1960 Circuito da Boavista, that I strongly object that they intend to "ruin" part of the town to do "some racing" instead of doing a proper "revival" in the real circuit, of course, has a lover, I will be there to watch the cars and the action (after all only 500 m from my house :) ).

If this is really is going to happen (maybe only propaganda) I would be very interested in meeting any friend from TNF that intends to come, so please PM me by then so that we can contact.

Welcome all

Yours
Neri

Oh... the car that caused the Clubman regulations in Australia to be rewritten... even if it had nothing to do with Clubmans!

Two of these cars came to Australia, by the way...

No Bob Beasley... so what do they know?

Also, the photo showing the engine and gearbox, it seems to have a VW-based box rather than the FT200.

Why not give us the story here Ray, I'm not familiar with the name either, especially if you have any photos

Well spotted , that is a Mk 5 Hewland 5 speed. That particular car was build new by Lotus Components for Clive Vandervell as a road car, they decided on the smaller lighter and vastly cheaper VW based gearbox as being a lighter change and more user friendly in traffic, than as you rightly say would have been the magnesium FT200

And it's in that gearbox fitment that the Clubman regulations were reframed in Australia...

Why?

Because they formerly stated, (the gearbox) "must be from a CAMS-recognised production car." When the CAMS recognised the 47 as a 'production sports car' it meant that the FT200 was viable as a choice for a really expensive Clubman. There was an allowance in the rules for changes to 'the input and outpug shafts, and their housings, for the purpose of adaptation'... in other words, you could take the drive out the back of the box and mount it conventionally.

Rather than admit their mistakes, the CAMS butchered the rules.

re: the 62... my understanding has always been that just two were made.
A nicely presented restored one was shown by it's (American?) owner at a Lotus festival at Brands Hatch a few years ago. Very nice to see it. Only superficially related to the 47 though.

I find the idea of 55 47s somewhat surprising. There were certainly quite a few of them on British circuits in their heyday, but that many? Did many go abroad? It's not as if they were the best car in its class, with a huge queue forming up at the door to buy one - I'd have been on my way to Bolton to have a chat with that nice Mr Bennett. And notice how there were only 650 S1 Europas (the type 46) - has someone miscounted a few Europas into the 47 figures?

"Were they honest?" is probably a more relevant question...

Wasn't the 47 an 'evolution' of the Twin Cam Europa for racing purposes?

47 is the racing version of the Europa
FT200 gearbox, F2 suspensions, drysump twin cam Lotus.
It s more than a modified Europa

Who is classicscars.com? I did a search of the forum and could not find anything and yet they have a website with lists of chassis for many obscure cars. Is it somebody here? :cat:

The site is owned by Philippe Olczyk. The database of race results and chassis numbers was purchased from a Czech researcher a few years ago.

Philippe posts regularly on 10 Tenths but I don't know if he's here too.

They had a road-legal 962 Porsche to sell at one point!

The 206 Dino SP looked nice.... I think it took a while to sell. I doubt it went to someone with shallow pockets.

What drew my interest is that they are promoting a book on the Lotus 47--which is presently poorly represented in my library at least. I was surprised to learn that barely 50% of the production run of 47s is accounted for....!
I was pm'd by a member who they are-nuff said

According to what I can find on the 'net, Lotus assigned chassis numbers 01 to 85 to the 47 but only produced 67 chassis which included 4 replacement chassis and 7 47Fs, which were cars for road use with pushrod or T/C Ford engines.

It seems 44 chassis are accounted for so it is better than I first thought.

No, not at all...

Bob Beasley was from Sydney. He started racing in a Lotus Super 7, then had an ex-Niel Allen Elan followed by the 47. I'm not sure if he was in the motor industry at all, but he wasn't a dealer himself if he was, perhaps a salesman.

Missed this one, obviously...

That's what I meant by putting 'evolution' in parenthesis. I realise they had very different items about them, but they could be said to have been derived from the twin-cam Europa.

They were, in fact, accepted in Australia (after some heavy lobbying, undoubtedly...) as Production Sports Cars. I think this might later have been reversed, but it applied for some time.

The 47 pre-dated the Twin Cam Europa by 4 years. The 47 was a development of the Renault Europa fitted with a Cosworth modified Lotus-Ford Twin Cam. The twin cam Europa could be said to be a development of the 47.
