Brabham BT19 (claimed) at Sanxet Museum, plus other cars

When I was over in France recently, I called in to the car museum at the Sanxet vineyard at Pomport, SW of Bergerac, ostensibly to photograph the Casimir Ragot Special, see other older thread..

Since my last visit two years ago, more cars have emerged, one of them being placarded as

Brabham BT19, F1, Jack Brabham 1964, which is not correct for a BT19 IIRC. I looked for a chassis plate, although I suspect that is just being optimistic. The car is very rough, but looks authentic for whatever it is, and carries a Lotus twin Cam in the back. Photos were difficult because of the low, bright sunlight coming in to an otherwise unlit building directly through the windows behind at 4.30pm, so it was too bright or heavily shadowed, although a couple came out OK.

The owner was heavily in conversation with a couple of others there and managed to ignore me, although the chatelaine was an absolute delight, a lady in the true sense, rather how I imagine the Duchess of Devonshire is.

Does anyone have any thoughts about the car.? Without wishing to denigrate the owner, I think he has an optimistic view of his cars, the AC and Elite being described to me as ex le Mans, on my first visit.

Other than the Casimir and one or two other later cars, Aston DB mk111, Merc SL, Jag mk2 and E type, it would be unkind to describe the rest of the stuff as rough, but the newness has clearly started to wear off.

However, the collection makes an interesting list, and you always have to go and look to see what is there in such places, quod vide, the Casimir Ragot.. The details given on the cars are not always accurate. The owner deserves credit for collecting/keeping/displaying the cars.

other oddments. All cars are parked very close together so access is limited. Photos available for most groups , to give a view of whether the 3 Euros entry was worth it., excl the E type, mk2, SL Merc.

The Casimir Ragot Special looked really good and was a testament to the builders and restorers, various shots available.

I have reduced the size of the images so they are about 150/170kb, so if anyone wants to see anything, e mail me and I will send them out.

Musee at Sanxet has its own emerging website, go via google. The house, location and vineyards are utterly superb, overlooking Bergerac in the distance, and the sun shone, as ever.............

Well it cannot be the BT19 as that is in Australia and is driven by Sir Jack on occasion.

If it is fitted with a Ford Twin-cam it could be anything , if it is a 1964 production car can be either a BT9 or BT10 that has been converted at some stage , would be interested to see photo's of the car to try an fill in more jigsaw pieces.

As I live in Belves, about 40 mins from Bergerac, I really should go and look at this place, I have been sent several pictures, it just looked a bit, "cold", and I have heard there are some "mis-indentifications" there!

Strangley I was taken to see what I was told was a BRM P153 locally. In the end I was allowed to see some suspension components and a hand beaten magnesium nose cone, and I instantly thought it looked more like a Pygmee nose, but they were fibre Glass (?), and there is a Pygmee in Sanxet. Makes me think!!

Whilst filming in south-west France last week, Steve & I visited the 'museum' at Sanxet. There was no sign of a 'Brabham', indeed the only single seater in the collection of around 25 cars was this Pygmee.........as you can see, it needs more than a little TLC.





There were about 6 cars that looked ready to run, the rest were in, quite frankly, pretty poor states.

Gary, When I was there in April, the owner said that the Brabham had been taken away by its owner. The Pygmee has been covered under that thread and Gerard has the photos which I took, incl shot of chassis plate. It is a shame you did not have chance to look at the remains of the Ragot supercharged motorbike engine, tucked away in the corner, claiming to be from 1920 , see own thread, which disappointingly attracted only two replies, or note the Citroen tank corse from 1927, 1600cc coupe, or the Jowett Jupiter Ghia coupe, or the WW2 flight simulator. Quirky but interesting because of that, IMHO

I gather that most of the stuff was bought in from another collection in the early 90s.

Still, it is in a fabulous location

Oh we looked!!! But the owner seemed to have us on a stopwatch, so we arranged to go back and film the next day, and he'd gone out!

The Casimir Ragot Special was superb, as were the two Voisins, but I failed to see what was so special about the E type to make it a prototype, the Elite was frankly, a mess, but I wouldn't have minded a go in the flight sim!!

The French often call any open-wheel race car "F1", which may explain the sign on front of this very tired Pygmee F2 with what Jenkinson would have loved, "original dust".

Just an old red 1800 from what the photo shows.

BTW the Pygmee is complete and very original, c/w chassis plate, but tired
