The car on the small trailer is a Lola T-292. For the season ending Runoffs in 1972 Hansen bought the Lola T-310 with which David Hobbs labored mightily in that year's Can Am. Jerry drove what he considers to be his best race ever, surprisingly in the T-310, winning the Runoffs in a great battle with Milt Minter who drove a turbo Porsche 917-10. But, Hansen realized quickly what Hobbs knew, that the car was a dog, so he sold it. Since he had already sold his Lola T-220 to Dan Kampo, he was in need of a car for 1973. At this time there was some sniping going on, with people knocking Jerry for always winning by buying the latest cars with the biggest engines. So, Jerry decided to show 'em. He bought a Lola T-292, a two liter car, and used that for the next two years. The wins did not stop! Hansen won a goodly number of events in those years, using the two liter Lola to beat the big iron. Both years he also won the Runoffs in Class B Sports Racing in this car.

I spoke at length with Jerry today, and he reiterated what I said in an earlier post. That is, he did not really care to turn pro. He ran the occasional pro race, and won the occasional pro race, but he did not want to do it full time, which is what it would have taken. Having said that, Jerry expressed one small regret: he ran the ex-Haas/Hall/Redman Lola T-330 from the end of 1973 through 1977, but now wishes that he would have bought a new T-332 and run it in a few races in the last year of the F-5000 series in the US, 1976. He says that he would have been most interested to see how he could do against the stars who ran that year, Redman, Unser, Ongais, Jones, Oliver. He really wishes he could have done that.

Overall, Jerry said that his 26 years of racing were "great fun, just great fun. I had such a wonderful time". Hard to argue with that.

I asked Jerry this question today. He says that he bought the car directly from Franz Weis, acting on behalf of Racing Team VDS, and then after he ran it for two years he sold it to Carl Haas. Jerry says that Carl then sold it to someone in England, but cannot remember who.

Thanks Tom. That someone in England would be John Foulston. The story was that he'd rebuilt his Lola T530 over the winter with VDS bodywork.

I'd always suspected that it was a real VDS and I think you've just confirmed that.

It turns out there were two different drivers named Jerry Hansen. The driver that competed in NASCAR resided in Bremen, Georgia, so, the Jerry Hansen being discussed here, did not compete in NASCAR. Either I was misled, or misled myself, back in 1974, and have carried it on since. Nice to get it straightened out.

It's embarrassing since I'm the one that usually correctly sorts out situations with "same name" drivers, like Al Miller and Bill Cantrell at Indianapolis.

I had a chance to check through race reports from Autoweek and there is no mention of him at Brainerd, so that must have been an error that crept into Phil Harms' compiled data. Only 17 cars showed up and 2 scratched before the first heat. With Autoweek's detailed accounts of the time, I think they would have mentioned any other cars.

Seattle he raced the Wynn's Pacesetter Lola-Ford to 7th and 8th in the two heat format. At Riverside, he was listed in the John Klug Eagle-Ford, but valve train problems led to an engine change after qualifying and he was a DNS.

Jerry Hansen's unconventional approach to sprint car racing. Jerry Hansen chose the number 44 because it was the number worn by Baseball Hall of Famer Henry " Hank" Aaron. Jerry looked up to Hank and was a sports fan. He thought Hank Aaron was a very humble guy and got things done. Jerry chose Orange for his cars because the McLaren team ran that color and they were winning races. His was a brighter Orange than the one McLaren's were using.
Jim Thurman: No one said you were wrong with quoting what you had read else where. It is probably another Jerry Hansen they are talking about. It was no mistake of yours. You believed it to be Jerry Hansen from Minnesota.

Hmmmmm....the mystery deepens. I have seen statistics that have Hansen qualifying a Pacesetter Homes Eagle at Brainerd, 13th I believe, but a dnf with no laps completed due to a broken valve. Perhaps he was one of the two that scratched???

Jerry recalls driving in USAC but says the car was an old car and was ill-prepared.

This is the Lola T-192 that Hansen drove in 1973. The year before he put a roll cage on his Lola T-300 and won at ST. Paul in a sprint car race that is referenced earlier in this thread and in the thread on rear engine sprint cars.

I have very much enjoyed this thread as I always enjoyed Mr. Hansen during his exploits at Road Atlanta in the fall. For many years I figured that he was largely winning by having deeper pockets but I was educated and impressed when he dropped down to 2L sports racers and still won. The photo of the car transporter with the trailer behind certainly shows that he was not just throwing money at the thing. You see much larger and more expensive rigs now for vintage racing which is supposed to be a fun hobby. So hats off to Jerry Hansen from a fellow Minnesotan (born in Virginia, Minn and transplanted to Oak Ridge, Tenn via Pennsylvania).
Oh, I was also impressed with his drive in the ex Hobbs Lola having seen that dog run in the CanAm. Even Hobbs considerable talents could not get the beast up to speed against the might of the McLarens.

Don Braaten in Wisconsin owns and vintage races a Lola 530 VDS. It does have the VDS body work but it may not be one of the original VDS cars. I do not think it is the ex-Hansen car

And therein lies the problem. Let's say, for the sake of arguement, that John Foulston bought the VDS-001 and had to maintain a pretence that it ws his T530 from the previous season. Let's then say Foulston died before fessing up. Let's then say the car was sold at auction with the identity Foulston had engineered for it. If all those things were true - and who knows, they might be - the current owner would think he had a Lola T530 with VDs bodywork on it when he actually had VDS-001.

What a tangled web we weave...

Last year I got a good look at the Braaten car with the body off. A chassis plate clearly states "Lola T-530". So the Braaten car is a Lola with a VDS body.

This beautiful little 5 year old girl looking at Jerry Hansen's Lola T-330 is none other than Kristin Schultz, daughter of our fellow forum member RA Historian.
This was taken at Blackhawk Farm in August of 1976. Jerry Hansen had sold the Lola T-330 at the end of the 1975 season. He bought it back in mid season of 1976, he ran this car for another year and a half. The interim owner had changed the color to yellow. Jerry didn't repaint it his usual Orange he left it yellow and added some Orange trim and ran it in this livery.

Wow, weird to see the 44 in another scheme! Terrific find!

I think I have a copy of the Midwest Racing News that contains a photo of Hansen winning the sprint car race in MN. I'll dig it up when my racing schedule simmers down a tad.

Ray I am glad you are enjoying this site. Jordyn LeValley, Jerry Hansen's daughter has sent me some pictures that are going to show the forum members what it was like in the day to be a racing family. Besides being a racer, Jerry Hansen was a loving father to his children.

As I have said besides being a racer Jerry Hansen is also a loving father. Here Jerry is with his son Frans and former wife Connie at the joyous occassion last year of the wedding of his daughter Jordyn to Mike LeValley. Also in the picture is Jordyn's sister Courtney Hansen. Connie is the mother of Jordyn and Courtney. Frans is the son of Jerry and Ingegerd.

Jerry Hansen in his Corvette. Jerry first got involved in racing in a Corvette. When he first went to Elkhart Lake it was with the Minneapolis Corvette Club. At Elkhart Lake they had an area called the Corvette Corral. All the Corvette's parked in this area. A fellow named Bill Mitchell was in charge of Corvette styling and he was a great supporter of the races at Elkhart Lake. He would bring the latest dream version of the Corvette to Elkhart Lake. He brought one called the Stingray and another called the Mako Shark. He was a great guy and seeing all these dream cars at Elkhart Lake was a big attraction to Jerry Hansen.

Jerry Hansen and Courtney and Connie at the races.
Courtney has graduated from Florida State University and has written a book called "The Garage Girl's Guide to Everything you need to know about your car." Jerry Hansen feels this should be required reading as he has written the forward to this book. Courtney has also appreared on the TV show Overhaulin and is currently working on the Spike TV show called PowerBlock.

To the best of my (current) knowledge Jerry drove the T-260 only once, and that was at the 1972 Donnybrooke Can Am. He was a DNF. He got rid of the car shortly thereafter, to Bob Nagel perhaps?

Bill Mitchell indeed was the chief of styling at General Motors for many years. In the early days of Road America Mitchell was a big, big supporter of the track, both directly and indirectly through GM. For 15-20 years it was common for Mitchell to bring one or more show cars, mostly Corvettes and Corvairs, to the June Sprints. I remember seeing the original Sting Ray, the Mako Shark, the Corvair SS, the Corvair Sebring Spyder, the Corvair Monza GT, the Corvette two rotor and later four rotor Wankel cars, and that Corvette even later with the 4 rotor replaced by a transverse Chevy V-8, a Pontiac Banshee, and on and on. There always was something extra to see, courtesy of Bill Mitchell.

From the very start the track had "Corvette Corral", a gathering spot for Corvettes. It currently is at the turn three area.

The track named the cross-over bridge at turn 13 the "Bill Mitchell Bridge". It was that from the start until this year, when the bridge was torn down and a new tunnel put in between turns 13 and 14. However, Bill is not forgotten, as turn 13 has been formally renamed the "Bill Mitchell Bend".

I am sending Jerry Entin one or two photos of Mitchell's cars at RA to post.

I was always jealous of Jerry Hansen at the dozens of race meets we both ran at. Him in primo equipment and me most of the time in junk. Parked next to him many times and never talked to him. But these pics bring back lots of memories. Being jealous was petty I guess. But he drove all the cars I wanted to and never could. Nobody should be that rich, unless I get to be too.

Corvette XP-700 that is track manager Clif Tufte in the passanger seat this is at Elkhart Lake in 1960. This will gives you an idea of the caliber of car Bill Mitchell was capable of coming up with.

Corvair Monza GT this is from 1962. Jerry Hansen and all the Corvette enthusiasts that came to Elkhart Lake for the races always looked forward to seeing what Bill Mitchell had brought up each year. He didn't disappoint his fans. Bill Mitchell also invited Jerry Hansen to drive one of the experimental Corvette's in the lunch time parade lap they had for the Corvette's.
Clif Tufte was the greatest track manager I have ever seen. He really cared about the fans and the drivers and all the Teams that came to his track. Jerry Hansen says that Clif Tufte treated him like he was family. Clif might as well have been Jerry Hansen's father. He was that nice to Jerry.

Another Corvette run by Jerry Hansen. Jerry was sponsored by Advanced United Trucking in this car. Their colors were white and red. That is why this car isn't orange.

This is Clif Tufte as he looked in 1974. He was the guiding force behind Elkhart Lake's Road America, and a great friend to Jerry Hansen. Clif passed away in 1981 at the age of 84.

Actually that is an M6A. At the conclusion of the 1967 Can Am, Roger Penske bought one of the works M6A cars. He put a 427 big block into it, and Mark Donohue had a very easy time winning the 1968 USRRC in it. At the conclusion of that year's series, Penske sold the car to Jerry Hansen, who used it in the 1968 Can Am series. The car was then sold by Hansen to Dave Causey, IIRC. Hansen did have an M6B of sorts, the M6A-3 that Roger Penske entered for Mark Donohue in the 1968 Can Am as an M6B. (Confusing, isn't it?). That car very briefly passed through Hansen's hands, I believe from Fred Baker and then to Gordon Dewar, but I do not recall Hansen ever racing it. Hansen was entered in it in the 1969 Road America Can Am, but was a DNS. That is the only record I have found of Jerry ever using the so called M6B.

This is that famous Kart driver Frans Hansen. His pit crew this day consisted of Paul Newman and Elliott Forbes Robinson, and in the back with his hands on his hip is future IRL driver Scott Sharp. Also in picutre are Danny Roe and Jerry Hansen. Frans won this race.

The good looking blonde behind Jerry Hansen is Dorothy Kathleen Benham, she was Miss America in 1977. Jerry said she was the sweetest most pleasant girl there was. She won her crown with singing as her forte. Also in picture are Courtney and Frans Hansen.

Elkhart Lake Road America 500 in 1968. Jerry Hansen was teamed with Mark Donohue in the Penske McLaren Mk 6. Sponsored by Sunoco. At the front of the car are Lothar Motschenbacher and Jerry Hansen. Leaning into the car is John Hilton and next to him is Frank Coon of TRACO. In the car is Jerry's co-driver Mark Donohue.
After showing this picture to Lothar he just smiled and said he thinks he has gained 20 pounds since this picture was taken. Lothar remembers going up to Jerry Hansen's summer house near Brainerd and going boating with him and Ingegerd and having a ball. He really enjoyed being with the Hansens.

On the right is Mike Lindorfer. On the left is Roy Campbell. This car had a 302 cu in Al Bartz engine and was called The Midwest Federal Special.

Jerry Hansen in his 1967 McLaren Mk. 3. This was to be the first McLaren car that Harry Mathews would purchase. He now has one of the best McLaren collections in the world. Jerry Hansen in his 1967 McLaren Mk. 3. This was to be the first McLaren car that Harry Mathews would purchase. He now has one of the best McLaren collections in the world. This car started it for Harry and his son Greg.

Vince: The above picture was from the CanAm in 1967. It was from Elkhart Lake where Jerry Hansen finished a fine 6th.
The owner of the radio station CKPR, or his son had bought the car off Jerry and it was intended a Canadian driver would drive the car in the CanAm. At the last minute the owner asked Jerry Hansen to drive it. Jerry did and the owner of the car was given all the proceeds from the winnings.
