2008 Goodwood Festival of Speed

Have just received the following press release concerning next year's FoS:

‘HAWTHORN TO HAMILTON – BRITAIN’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH WORLD MOTOR SPORT’

The Earl of March has today (Wednesday 19 December) confirmed the theme of the 2008 Goodwood Festival of Speed, which is ‘Hawthorn to Hamilton – Britain’s Love Affair with World Motor Sport’. Britain has always played a key role in the global motor racing industry, forging successful relationships with the rest of the motor sport world. From Mike Hawthorn – who used a Ferrari to become Britain’s first Formula 1 World Champion fifty years ago in 1958 – to current F1 star Lewis Hamilton, driving a British engineered car with German power, British drivers and engineers have utilised global resources to achieve success. The 2008 Festival honours these winning combinations.

In recognising Britain’s role in shaping motor sport worldwide, the Festival will acknowledge the influence and achievements of iconic British figures, including Jim Clark, John Surtees, Colin McRae, Barry Sheene, Jackie Stewart, Derek Bell, Colin Chapman, Gordon Murray and Adrian Newey. In addition, home-grown stars from the past and modern day heroes are expected to line up alongside their friends and adversaries from around the world at the celebrated 1.16 mile hillclimb, in a tribute to global motor sport.

The Festival will also feature the world’s finest competition cars and motorcycles, many of which have been influenced by British engineering or built in partnership with British expertise. In action will be everything from the pure-bred Vanwall of the 1950s, to the ground-breaking products of manufacturers such as Cosworth, Williams, Lola and Prodrive. And with significant anniversaries in 2008 for two of Britain’s most important race series – namely 50 years of the BTCC and 20 years of the British Superbike Championship – Goodwood will recognise the UK’s role in providing a high-profile, competitive environment for some of the world’s great manufacturers and racing stars.

Complementing the overall Festival theme will be a host of other attractions at the world’s greatest celebration of motoring. Away from the action-packed hillclimb and paddocks, Festival-goers will be able to relish some of the most stylish vehicles ever made at the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours d’elegance, glimpse into the future of personal transportation at the FoS-TECH technology pavilion, see many of motor sport’s famous faces up close, swoon at the mouth-watering display of supercars, and become a part of the action at the activity fields and Junior Festival of Speed.

A full summary of the drivers and riders, along with the vehicles they will be running up the challenging 1.16-mile Goodwood hillclimb, is below.

Rauno Aaltonen, former World Rally driver will be driving a Mini Cooper S and Opel Manta 400 on the Forest Rally Stage.

Bobby Allison, Daytona 500 winner and NASCAR Winston Cup Champion, will drive a Buick Regal from his 1983 Championship winning season.

Chris Atkinson, WRC driver for Subaru, will take to the hill and the Forest Rally Stage in a Subaru Impreza WRC on the Sunday of the Festival.

Richard Attwood, popular Le Mans winner, will be present and is expected to drive a Porsche 908/3.

Alex Barros, former Grand Prix motorcycle rider, is expected to take to the hill on a 1989 Cagiva V589.

Derek Bell, five-time Le Mans winner, will once more be at the Festival all three days, driving a Mirage GR7 and a Ferrari 312 B3S.

Sebastian Buemi, current test driver for Red Bull Racing F1, will drive the Red Bull-Renault RB3.

Stig Blomqvist, former World Rally Champion, will drive an Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 and Talbot Sunbeam Lotus on the Forest Rally Stage.

Sebastian Bourdais, four-time Champ Car Champion and current F1 driver for Toro Rosso, is expected to drive his multiple Championship winning Lola B03-00 on the hill.

Russell Brookes, former British Champion and star of the British circuit, will drive his 1985 title-winning Opel Manta 400 all weekend on the Forest Rally Stage.

Ralph Bryans, former Honda works motorcycle star, will ride a 1962 Honda RC171 motorcycle.

Andy Burton, hero of British rallying, will be in action on the Forest Rally Stage over the weekend, in his unique Peugeot-Cosworth.

Jenson Button, star driver for Honda Racing F1 team, will drive the Honda RA108 over the course of the weekend.

Carlos Checa, former Grand Prix motorcycle rider and current WSB rider, will ride his for Ten Kate Honda CBR1000RR on the hill.

Eddie Cheever, Indianapolis 500 winner both as a driver and a team owner, will be in attendance over the Festival weekend.

Tom Chilton, BTCC driver, will be driving his 2008 Honda Civic Type R.

John Cleland, former BTCC champion will be driving his championship winning 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier.

Troy Corser, two-time WSB champion, will be present at the Festival.

Cal Crutchlow, BSB Championship contender, will ride a 2008 HM Plant Honda CBR1000RR over the course of the weekend.

Darren Dixon, British TTF1 Championship winner and two-time World Sidecar Champion, is expected to ride a Suzuki RGV500.

Marcus Dodd, twice British Rally Champion, will drive a 2003 Hyundai Accent WRC, all weekend on the Forest Rally Stage.

Martin Donnelly, former F1 driver for Arrows and Lotus, will drive a 1968 Lotus 49B.

Mick Doohan, five-time World Motorcycle Grand Prix Champion, will be riding a classic Honda over the weekend.

Gwyndaf Evans, Welsh rallying wizard and former British Rally Champion, is expected to drive the Grp N Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9, which he drives in the British Championship.

Carl Fogarty, four-times WSB Champion, is expected to ride Steve Hislop's 2002 British Championship winning Monstermob Ducati 996R.

Jim France, Executive Vice President of NASCAR, America's most popular motor racing series, will be present at the Festival.

Nanni Galli, former F1 driver for McLaren, Ferrari and Williams, will be driving a 1972 Tecno PA123.

Frank Gardner, three-time BTCC Champion and double Formula 5000 Champion, will be driving his 1968 BTCC Championship winning Ford Escort Twin Cam.

Stuart Graham, one of the few men to win TT's on two and four wheels - will take to the hill on a 1967 Honda RC174.

Carl Haas, famous US Team owner, is expected to attend the Festival as part of Lola's 50th anniversary celebrations.

Lewis Hamilton, British F1 star and serious title contender, will attend on the Sunday of the event and drive his McLaren-Mercedes MP4-23 F1 race car.

Leon Haslam, BSB Championship contender, will ride a 2008 HM Plant Honda CBR1000RR over the course of the weekend.

John Haugland, former works Skoda rally driver, will drive the ex-Colin McRae Skoda Fabia WRC as part of a tribute to McRae's career.

Hurley Haywood, three-time Le Mans winner, will drive the 2003 Brumos-Porsche Grand-Am Daytona Prototype.

Bob Heath, will take to the hill on a 1961 Honda RC173 motorcycle.

Mikko Hirvonen, World Rally Championship driver and five-time rally winner, will drive his BP Ford Focus WRC on the hillclimb and Forest Rally Stage.

David Hobbs, versatile British driver, Formula 5000 and Trans-Am Champion will drive a 1972 Lola T332.

Christian Horner, Team Principal of Red Bull Racing F1, will be present over the course of the weekend.

Yukio Kagayama, WSB Championship contender, will be in action all weekend on his Pepephone Alstare Suzuki GSX-R1000 K8.

Juha Kankkunen, four-time World Rally Champion, will be driving a 1998 Toyota Corolla WRC on the hill.

Dougie Lampkin, twelve-time individual World Champion trials rider, will be performing a manner of tricks on his Beta Trials Bike over the course of the weekend.

Timo Makinen, one of the original flying Finns, is expected to be in attendance over the Festival weekend.

The Earl of March will drive a selection of historically significant machinery over the weekend.

Markko Martin, former World Rally Championship driver and five-time rally winner, will take to the hill and the Forest Rally Stage in a Subaru Impreza WRC on the Friday of the Festival.

Nick Mason, the Pink Floyd drummer and keen motor enthusiast, will drive the 1938 Auto Union Type D.

Jochen Mass, former Grand Prix star and Le Mans winner, will drive the 1908 Benz Grand Prix car and is also expected to drive a 1989 Sauber C9.

John McGuinness, multiple TT winner, will ride the HM Plant Honda CBR1000RR that he rode to victory in the 2007 Isle of Man TT.

Allan McNish, former F1 driver and Le Mans winner, is expected to drive his Audi R10 endurance race car.

Hannu Mikkola, 1983 World Rally Champion and designer of the Goodwood Forest Rally Stage, is expected to drive an Audi Quattro S1 and Ford Escort Mk1 throughout the weekend on the Forest Rally Stage.

Rod Millen, Kiwi hillclimbing legend and Pike's Peak winner, will drive his 1994 Toyota Celica in which he won the world famous hillclimb.

Nicolas Minassian, Peugeot Endurance racing driver will be in attendance over the course of the weekend, fresh from competing at the Le Mans 24 hours.

Chas Mortimer, eight-time Isle of Mann TT winner, will ride an ex-Barry Sheene Yamaha OW53 YZR500.

Sir Stirling Moss, probably Britain's greatest-ever never to win a World Formula 1 title, will be driving a 1958 Vanwall.

Alesandro Nannini, former F1 driver for Bennetton and Minardi, will be present at the Festival.

Jackie Oliver - Le Mans winner, F1 driver and former Arrows F1 team owner, will drive a Porsche 917K.

Win Percy, three-time BTCC Champion and Bathurst 1000 winner, will drive a 1958 Jaguar Mk1.

Brian Redman, F1 driver with a brilliant career in sports cars for Ferrari and Porsche, will drive a Porsche over the course of the weekend.

Jim Redman, multiple World Championship-winning motorcyclist, will take to the hill on a classic Honda racing bike.

Anthony Reid, stalwart of the British Touring Car Championship, will drive a BTCC Nissan Primera and a Williams FW07 over the course of the weekend.

John Reynolds, three-time BSB Champion, will be riding his 2004 championship winning Rizla Suzuki GSX-R1000.

John Rhodes, British Saloon and European Touring Car Champion, will drive a 1965 Mini Cooper S on the hill.

Tommy Robb, former works rider for Honda, will take to the hill on a classic Honda racing bike.

Andy Rouse, four-time BTCC Champion and most successful British Touring Car driver ever, is expected to drive a Triumph Dolomite Sprint on the hill.

Michael Rutter, BSB Championship contender, will ride his Northwest 200 Ducati 1098R at the Festival this year.

Terry Rymer, British Champion and the first British rider to win a World Superbike race, will be in action on the Loctite Yamaha OW01 at the Festival.

Tom Sneva, Indy 500 winner and two-time Indycar Champion is expected to drive his 1983 Indy 500 winning March 83C.

Petter Solberg, former World Rally Champion, will take to the hill and the Forest Rally Stage in a Subaru Impreza WRC on the Saturday of the Festival.

Steve Soper, BTCC Championship stalwart, will drive a 2007 WTCC BMW 320i throughout the weekend.

Sir Jackie Stewart, Britain's most accomplished F1 Champion, having lifted the crown three times, is expected to drive a Matra MS80 and a Tyrrell 001 over the course of the weekend.

Tom Sykes, BSB Championship contender, will ride his Rizla Suzuki GSX-R1000K8 over the course of the weekend.

Luigi Taveri, former works rider and TT winner will take to the hill on a 1961 Honda RC162 motorcycle.

Paul Tracy, 2003 Champ Car Champion, will drive his 1997 race-winning Penske PC26 Champ Car.

Oliver Turvey, current British Formula Three Championship contender will be in action over the Festival weekend.

Bobby Unser, three-time Indy 500 winner and 13-time Pikes Peak Hillclimb Champion, is expected to drive an Audi Sport Quattro S1 'Pikes Peak' over the Festival weekend.

Bj?rn Waldegård, rallying superstar and the first-ever winner of the Drivers' World Championship, will take to the hill and the Forest Rally Stage in a Ford Escort Mk2 as part of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Ford Escort.

John Watson, five-time F1 Grand Prix winner, will drive a 1987 Porsche 962 on the hill.

Jamie Whitham, former British Superbike Champion and current Superbike commentator for Eurosport, is expected to ride a 1998 Cadbury's Boost Yamaha YZF750 over the course of the weekend.

John Whitmore, former British and European Touring Car Champion, is expected to drive a Ford-Lotus Cortina Mk1 at the Festival.

Malcolm Wilson - Britain's leading rally driver during the explosive Group B period in the 1980s and principal of the Ford M-Sport works rally team - will be present over the weekend.

Matthew Wilson - WRC driver and son of Group B star Malcolm - will drive the Stobart Ford Focus WRC up the hill and on the Forest Rally Stage.

Stan Woods, 10-time TT winner, will ride the late Alan Robinson's Manx Norton 500 at the Festival.

Alex Wurz, current test driver for Honda F1 Racing, will be present at the Festival on Saturday, driving the Honda RA108.

I see that Win Percy is down to drive a Jag - that's splendid news! All in all, a pretty good line up methinks.

No shortage of FOS announcements in my case. Over the last week or so, they've sent me eight or ten identical notifications, all to the same e-mail address. They clearly don't want me to miss it. As if I would.

Win is coming over from Spain to drive Nigel Webb's replica of Mike Hawthorn's 3.4L Mark 1, VDU 881 (it carries 881 VDU) up the hill. It's been modified with hand controls especially for Win - photo below of the mod taken a few days back. I'll be with the team for the car at the FOS, also hoping to tie up that car with Lewis Hamilton for a photo at some point for the new Mike Hawthorn Book....

What a pity I cant make it, down at Pembrey for the historic F3 meeting, somehow I think there will be less crowds there and a bit more racing.

However will be there for the revival.

The Times/Sunday Times are doing their free Friday tickets promotion again this year.

I'm not going simply due to the fact the crowds are simply too much. Love the machinery and its a great day out.

That was my initial thought too, but then I thought if I can go on the Friday for free and still get to use my badge privileges...

you're close, its a BT36, I think it's the original chassis for Peter Westbury's car. This was restored by Leitch Motosport in New Zealand a few years ago and subsequently, and I stress I have only circumstantial evidence, it was given a new chassis and the car sold at auction last year. When it left NZ it still had the original chassis but this was not evident at the time of auction last year.

I understand title to the chassis is not in question, Bonhams have every right to sell it but I am somewhat puzzled that it has not gone with the rest of the car.
It would seem that the owner has first sold the car, and is now selling the chassis for it, ummmmmm,

Ummmmm - I wonder how long it will be before there two versions of BT36-5

The local newspaper (Chichester/Bognor/Midhurst Observer) is doing its usual offer of a free Friday ticket with every Sat or Sun ticket. Buy both and you end up with a 3 day ticket, plus a spare Friday, for £94.

This is actually a pretty good deal; normal price for a 3 day ticket is £99, or half a six day ticket (Festival and Revival) is £94.

But aren't these prices just a teensy bit expensive for a historic event? Is Goodwood aiming for 'the right crowd and no crowding' by pricing out the ordinary punter?

Our day tickets for the FoS work out at about the same as my brother pays for some football matches he goes to. We always rationalise it as getting a full day of something.
I know the price of catering etc adds a lot, but you could always take a picnic, I suppose. Food costs about the same as at pretty much every Silverstone meeting I've gone to.

In just under two weeks time many of the visitors to the 2008 Festival of Speed (11-13 July) will get their first glance of the world's largest passenger airliner - the Airbus A380 - in low speed action as the phenomenal double-decker, wide-bodied aircraft flies slowly over Goodwood Park on Saturday 12 July.

The Airbus A380, or Superjumbo as it is sometimes known, can seat up to 853 passengers, depending on seat configuration, with a range of 15,200 kilometres and a cruising speed of Mach 0.85, equating to around 560 mph. The A380 is truly immense, being 73m in length, with a wing span of 79.8m, making it very difficult to miss as it flies over the Goodwood crowds.

On Sunday 13 July the fast pace set by current Formula One sensation Lewis Hamilton at the Festival of Speed as he zooms up the challenging 1.16 mile Goodwood hillclimb will be trounced by the Red Arrows as they put on one of their popular displays for the Festival goers.

I haven't forgotten that display by a South African Airlines Jumbo at Goodwood two or three years ago. Best aerobatics I've ever seen performed by a large airliner, but a good thing he didn't have any passengers on board, they would have run out of sickbags before the second flypast.

They've certainly been there on a number of occasions in earlier years, Elise. Hope to see some of you on Friday - first time for about 5 or 6 years.

Is there likely to be a TNF meeting at any stage over the weekend? If so when and where?

Usual rendezvous is Ted's stand...Ferret photographics about lunchtime when not much is happenning on the hill-climb...so either 12 or 1pm. Would be handy if he says that's ok and tells us his stand number
I wasn't expecting to attend this year so haven't taken notice of the programme - will only be there Friday, courtesy of the Sunday Times, as I have to return early Saturday morning for Bedford's river festival weekend.

Motorcycles: A who's who of riders and bikes will be in attendance at Goodwood, with huge names such as Carl Fogarty, Troy Corser, Mick Doohan and Yukio Kagayama set to entertain the Festival crowds. Motorcycle highlights include the ex-Barry Sheene 1975 Suzuki XR14 RG500, ex-Mick Grant 1981 Yamaha OW53 YZR500 and ex-Randy Mamola 1989 Cagiva, as well as modern era bikes such as the Alstare Suzuki GSX-R1000, BMW HP2 Sport, HM Plant Honda CBR1000RR and the Rizla Suzuki GSX-R1000. Twelve-time international trials champion Dougie Lampkin will also be popping up all over the Goodwood Estate throughout the Festival weekend, riding on things that he shouldn't.

Key Displays: Although still under wraps, this year's extravaganza of automotive art directly outside Goodwood House will celebrate the diamond jubilee of Britain's most travelled car marque - Land Rover. At over 35 metres high, this central feature will be one of the Festival's largest and most ambitious yet, towering above Goodwood House, and visible from many miles away. In fact it is so tall that a red warning light has been fitted to alert any passing low-flying aircraft, including a flypast of the huge Airbus A380 'superjumbo' on Saturday, and the Red Arrows air display team that will be performing at the event on Sunday. The Goodwood Cricket Pitch, the oldest in the world, will house a dozen top-fuel dragsters from the 1950s and 1960s with a twice-daily 'cacklefest' as these ultra-powerful machines fire up.

Cartier 'Style et Luxe': This prestigious annual homage to the finest in automotive design will this year include many of the extraordinary cars used by James Bond, including his iconic Aston Martin DB5 and Lotus Esprit, positioned on a special 007 film set. Other Cartier displays will range from the Ford Model T, celebrating its centenary, to the priceless supercharged coachbuilt pre-War Mercedes-Benz. Expect to see some ultra-rare supercars from the 1960s to the early 1990s, including the beautiful Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale and Audi AVUS.

The Sunday Times Supercar Run: A multi-million pound collection of the world's most desirable contemporary exotica will be demonstrated on the Hill. Watch out for debuts of the stunning Bugatti Veyron 16.4 'Hermes' and Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS being put though their paces, plus the first UK sighting of the new Artega GT, Nissan GT-R and Mazda Furio concept in action.

FoS-TECH: A recent Festival feature, this state-of-the-art technology exhibition focuses on the future of motoring and environmental issues in a series of interesting new initiatives and displays. FoS-TECH will showcase a variety of exciting new technologies from motor manufacturers, design specialists, oil companies and other motor industry suppliers, with exhibits of concept cars not seen in the UK before, including the Land Rover LRX, Toyota i-REAL, Morgan Lifecar, and the amazing Parajet Skycar, the world's first and only flying carbon neutral automobile.

Junior Festival of Speed: Something to keep kids of all ages entertained, with masses of things to do, from discovering the latest Wacky Racers to big fun in the Big Top circus tent. The UK's number one mountain bike stunt team, MAD, will amaze all, as will Rarekind, Britain's only graffiti art gallery. And the live music is worth the ticket price alone, including the Ford Focus Orchestra making its Festival debut, playing instruments made from the parts of Ford Focus cars.

A Great Spectator Occasion: What Wimbledon is to tennis, and Henley is to rowing, so Goodwood is to motor sport, having quickly established itself as the place to be every summer to see the very best that motor racing has to offer. No other motoring event can match the unique combination of more than 350 vehicles and over 100 motor racing heroes, blasting up the drive of one of England's most revered stately homes. Enthusiasts can enjoy watching a celebration of 50 years of BTCC and Lola racing cars in action, plus 40 years of racing F1 McLarens and Ford Escorts. No wonder the Festival of Speed has often been described as 'the Garden Party of the Gods.'

Festival entry is by advance ticket only, with a limited number of tickets still being available. A handful of grandstand seats for Corner Grandstand are also still available, although selling fast.

I'll be interested by close up photos of all single seaters, Sport protos, only technical details. Will swap with a DVD of 1200 photos on Monaco Historic 2008.

OK then, shall we make it 1-00 pm at the Startline Bar? I suggest we aim to congregate on the right hand side of the bar entrance as you approach it, ie on your left if you're standing inside looking out.

Also, if driverider would like a badge, Barry could post it to me and I could deliver it on Friday.

Also hoping to be there on Friday so will look out for a gaggle (banter? punditry? erudition?) of TNFers if work stuff doesn't get in the way.

For the newbies if you look at old Goodwood threads there's usually a few pics posted of the TNFers meet, so if you're unsure about approaching a group, you might recognise us from them
Plus the badges will give us away....except I've still lost mine. :

I had a look at the preparations at Goodwood a few days ago...all looks terrific and I for one am looking forward to a fabulous FoS

The local weather forecast for tomorrow is not looking too good, showers all day.........which means it could rain all day, or be dry all day! Saturday and Sunday are looking OK though.

But if there is anyone who wants to go tomorrow, but doesn't have a ticket, I have a spare one which came free from my local paper, so if anyone wants it, pm me for a meeting-point/time.
