Peter Ashcroft, engine-builder, Competitions Manager, and then Motorsport Director of Ford of Europe, died on Sunday in South Carolina.

He was a very capable and kind man. I came very close to co-driving in the Ford team on three occasions but it never happened, although I would love to have competed under Peter's leadership.

I feel old, with eras ending. Not normally quite as accessible to grass roots private entrants as, say, Des O'Dell, but the same helpful spirit to them, behind the scenes, that he caused to filter down via others.

A great loss. a guy that every motorsport fan should be aware of, he gave so much, the years are rolling on for all of us. I wish Peter a full house BDA complete with ZF 5 speed to take him to the pearly gates, there will be a few of his old mates and colleagues to greet him

How better to remember Peter Ashcroft than with his words right at the end of this famous clip?

We'd better make the most of it now then! :drunk: It's never too late to compete, Brian Davies from Swansea is 72 in August, Brian Dennis is around that age as well and they both still get out regularly.

It's nice that such a thoughtful man as Fred Gallagher should post this; he was unfortunate enough to be on holiday in the late 80's at the long lost Ocean View Hotel in Hastings, Barbados, and I got to know him because I'm Tony Gallagher, and we kept getting each other's faxes!
I tormented the hell out of him with motorsport questions, often well lubricated, but he never complained once! His partner / wife was a diver, and brought my wife up some exotic shells that are still in our bathroom to this day!
Thanks Fred's missus!

He also told me some gems regarding Bjorn W., and dining with the Toyota board after a Safari win.....

Thank you to everyone who has posted kind words about my father, Peter Ashcroft. I have found myself searching the web for info on him, and I have found great comfort in how much he was respected and admired.
