The following was posted at the Motorsports History thread.

Thanks for the input! :wave:

In order to keep the ORIGINAL IDEA of this thread, I believe with the next posting a thread dedicated to NASCAR history will be logged.

I will do my best to transfer the information provided by the young author on a daily basis (or as quick as he assembles).

Realizing that some of the information (hey, this is NASCAR) may be open to question I would simply ask that corrections of the young man's work be done in the normal professional manner of the TNF members. Thanks!

What is the difference between an 'event' and a 'race'? The 'event' in post #2 appears to be a race.

FIA in the International Sporting code define an event as ''A single event with its owns rsults. It may comprise (a) heat(s) and a final, free practice and qualifying.........but it must be completed by the end of the meeting''.
I refer you to the FIA web site and the International Sporting code Chapter 2 Article 16.
Not necessarliy the perfect or best answer but it does seem to work as a definition.

Feb 1st, 1953: Lee Petty and Jimmie Lewallen finish first and second in the 1953 Nascar Grand National opener at West Palm Beach. Both drive Dodge Diplomats prepared in the Randleman, NC Petty engineering shops.

Feb 1st, 1959: Practice sessions begin on the new Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the inaugural Daytona 500. Shakedown runs are conducted despite the fact that the guardrail isn't completed.

Feb 1st, 1969: In his first start in a Ford, Richard Petty wins the Motor Trend 500 on the Riverside road course. Petty finishes 25 seconds ahead of runner-up AJ Foyt.

Feb 12th, 2006: Rookie driver Denny Hamlin wins the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona in his first career restrictor plate start.

Feb 13th, 2007: Nascar announces harsh penalties for 4 teams after illegal modifications were found on their cars during pre and post-qualifying inspection for the Daytona 500. Robbie Reiser, crew chief for Matt Kenseth, along with Kasey Kahne's car chief Kenny Francis were each suspended for 4 races and the teams were fined 50 points. Also the 2 other Evernham teams of Scott Riggs and Elliott Sadler each had their crew chiefs suspended for 2 races and were fined 25 points for pre-qualfying violations. This is the 2nd straight year at Daytona that high profile teams have been severely penalized. Last year Jimmie Johnson's crew chief Chad Knaus was suspended for 4 races including the Daytona 500 which Johnson would go on to win.

No races ever held on this date.

Feb 14th, 1960: Junior Johnson passes a spinning Bobby Johns with nine laps remaining and hustles to victory in the second annual Daytona 500. Driving a 1959 chevy impala, Johnson beats a record 68 car field and wins 19,600 dollars.

Feb 14th, 1965: Fred Lorenzen wins the rain-shortened Daytona 500, finishing a lap ahead of runner-up Darel Dieringer. Fords and Mercurys take the top 13 positions as the factory Chrysler team continues its boycott.

Feb 14th, 1971: Richard Petty wins his third Daytona 500 ahead of Buddy Baker, giving Petty Enterprises a 1-2 finish. Dick Brooks finishes seventh in a winged Dodge Daytona, the final appearance of the exotic aerodynamic wonder in a Nascar event.

Feb 14th, 1982: Bobby Allison blisters the field to win his second Daytona 500. Allison's #88 DiGard Buick finishes a half-lap ahead of runner up Cale Yarborough.

Feb 14th, 1988: In the 30th running of the Daytona 500, Bobby and Davey Allison finish first and second in Nascar's most prestigious event. Richard Petty survives a wild tumble just past the halfway point. Nascar's tire wars begin as ten teams use Hoosier tires at Daytona.

Feb 14th, 1993: Dale Jarrett muscles his way past Dale Earnhardt on the final lap and records a one car length victory in the Daytona 500. Jarrett's last lap heroics thwart Earnhardt's 15th bid for a win in Nascar's biggest event.

Feb 14th, 2007: In one of the "dirtiest" Speedweeks in recent memory, Michael Waltrip is penalized heavily for violations found when an illegal substance was found in the manifold of his Toyota Camry. MWR director of competiton Bobby Kennedy and crewchief for the 55 David Hyder were suspended indefinitely while Hyder was also fined 100,000 dollars. Michael was also fined 100 championship points, one of the biggest penalties in Nascar history. The team's car was confiscated and taken to the Nascar R&D;center for further examination. This penalty caps off a Speedweeks that saw all 4 other cars penalized as well.

Feb 14th, 2008: Denny Hamlin wins 1 of the Gatorade Duels at Daytona, giving Manufacturer Toyota its first win in the Sprint Cup Series and the first for a foreign nameplate in Nascar since the 1950's.

Feb 15th, 1948: Red Byron wins the first Nascar sanctioned auto race in a 1939 modified ford owned by Raymond Parks and tuned by Red Vogt. Of the 62 cars that enter, 50 start. A crowd of 14,000 pay 2.50 each to watch the historic moment at the Daytona Beach Road Course.

Feb 15th, 1953: Fonty Flock runs out of fuel on the final lap as Bill Blair drives to victory in the Nascar event on the Daytona beach Road course. It is the first Grand National race to be determined by a last lap pass.

Feb 15th, 1976: David Pearson creeps across the finish line at 20 mph to beat Richard Petty in a stunning finish to the Daytona 500. Pearson and Petty swap the lead four times on the final lap and tangle off the fourth turn. Pearson gets his Mercury staightened out and crosses the finish line first.

Feb 15th, 1981: Richard Petty wins his record seventh Daytona 500. Petty's longtime crew chief Dale Inman quits two days later to accept a job with the Rod Osterlund/Dale Earnhardt team.

Feb 15th, 1987: Geoff Bodine runs out of fuel with three laps to go, allowing Bill Elliott to score his second win in the Daytona 500. Benny Parsons finishes second in his first assignment since replacing Tim Richmond.

Feb 15th, 1998: With the Thunderbird no longer available, Ford introduces the Taurus for competition in Nascar's 50th anniversary season. Dale Earnhardt ends two decades of frustration at the Daytona 500. Earnhardt, making his 20th start in Nascar's super bowl, leads the final 61 laps and edges Bobby Labonte at the finish. It is the 71st win of Earnhardt's careeer and it snaps a victory drought that dates back to 1996.

Feb 15th, 2004: Dale Earnhardt Jooonyer follows his father's footsteps and wins the Daytona 500 6 years to the day after his father won the great american race.

Feb 16th, 1975: Benny Parsons takes the lead three laps from the finish and wins the Daytona 500 when leader David Pearson spins on the backstretch. Parsons comes from the 32nd starting position to claim the upset win and the biggest victory of his career.

Feb 16th, 1986: Geoff Bodine outlasts Dale Earnhardt to win the Daytona 500. Earnhardt is poised to slingshot around Bodine for the win, but runs out of fuel with three laps remaining.

Feb 16th, 1992: Davey Allison dodges several wrecks and finishes a car length ahead of Morgan Shepherd to win the Daytona 500. A 14 car crash cripples or takes out nine of the 16 cars running on the lead lap.

Feb 16th, 1997: Jeff Gordon drives past Bill Elliott with six laps remaining and leads a 1-2-3 sweep for the Hendrick Motorsports team in the 39th running of the Daytona 500. Gordon, Terry Labonte, and Ricky Craven gang up on Elliott in the stretch drive and take the top three spots in Nascar's most celebrated event.

Feb 16th, 2003: Michael Waltrip wins his second Daytona 500. The race is rain shortened, only the second time the 500 has ever been shortened.

Feb 17th, 1957: Cotton Owens drives the Ray Nichels Pontiac to victory in the Daytona Beach Nascar event, recording the first Nascar win for the pontiac nameplate.

Feb 17th, 1974: Richard Petty rallies from a flat tire, takes the lead with 11 laps remaining, and drives to victory in the 450 mile Daytona 500. Speedway officials decide to drop the first 20 laps from the race, and count the first lap as lap 21 to maintain the 500 in the name of the race.

Feb 17th, 1980: In his 18th Daytona 500 start, Buddy Baker shakes the monkey off his back with a resounding victory. Baker's oldsmobile average's a record 177.602 mph. Bobby Allison finishes 2nd.

Feb 17th, 1985: Bill Elliott leads 136 of the 200 laps in dominating the Daytona 500. Elliott dominates Daytona's Speedweeks, winning the pole at more than 205 mph and nearly lapping the field in the twin 125 qualifier.

Feb 17th, 2002: Ward Burton leads only the final five laps and scores an upset win in the Daytona 500. Sterling Marlin is penalized by Nascar when he pulls a fender off of his right front tire during a late red flag. Nascar rules prohibit work from being done to a car during a red flag situation.

February 17th, 2008: Ryan Newman passes Tont Stewart with 2 laps to go and wins the 50th annual Daytona 500. The race ends a long winless drought for Newman and he leads a Penske Team 1-2 across the line. It is the first Daytona 500 win for Penske. Dale Jr is his first points race for Hendrick Motorsports finishes 9th.

Feb 18th, 1962: Fireball Roberts leads 144 of the 200 laps in his overwhelming triumph in the fourth annual Daytona 500. Roberts caps off a perfect speedweeks, winning the American Challenge invitational event for winners of 1961 events, the pole position for the 500, the twin 100-mile qualifier, and the Daytona 500. Richard Petty, who finishes second, protests Roberts' win, claiming the Yunick's team used more than six pit crewmen during the race. Roberts win is upheld three days later.

Feb 18th, 1973: Richard Petty outlasts a speedy Buddy Baker to post his fourth win in the Daytona 500. Pole-sitter Baker leads most of the way but is foiled by an engine failure while running second with six laps to go.

Feb 18th, 1979: Richard Petty hustles past the crashed cars of Cale Yarborough and Donnie Allison to win the Daytona 500, snapping his 45-race winless drought. I have to agree with Richard. I would suggest that the format be changed to make it both easier to read and more accessible. Although I am beginning to almost grasp (but not necessarily understand) the difference between the entries in the "events" and "races" categories, I would suggest that they be merged into a format with a chronological listing for each date.

Just a suggestion on the format, so as to shift the focus to the content.

As Richard points out, there is much to ferret out in this realm. I also send my best wishes to the young person doing this for continued success in this worthy endeavor. This is the sort of drudge work that really pays off down the road. Good job.

Hi Richard!

His focus is on the top division of NASCAR. Of couse I am taking nothing away from the others races, drivers and owners.

Don/Richard, I think as the young gentleman ages and matures perhaps he will be better at organizing. I still think this is a monumental everyday occurance to put this together. And, I certainly want to continue with his approval to transfer this information to TNF.

Who knows, one day he could be another Donald Capps with the base of information he is gathering! :up:

Henry,

I certainly want to encourage him. This sort of thing is not at all easy. Believe me, I know. It is painful at times beyond any reasonable level for what should be "fun." However, it is one of the ways you learn and then begin to develop an appreciation for motor racing.

Something that one also learns along the way is how to present information to both yourself and others (I even took a three-day seminar on this once upon a time). That also means evaluating feedback. This was simply well-intended feedback from Richard and myself.

I look forward to seeing this project through the rest of the year.

Feb 25th, 1959: Lee Petty is officially declared the winner of the Daytona 500-mile race 61 hours after the checkered flag fell on the historic event. Nascar president Bill France says photographs and film evidence "substantiated" that Petty won the hard-fought race.

Feb 25th, 1968: Cale Yarborough wins the Daytona 500 by less than a second over LeeRoy Yarbrough. Gordon Johncock's Smokey Yunick- prepared Chevy is not permitted to compete when Nascar officials find a number of rules violations during inspection. (maybe Chad Knaus was his crew chief j/k)

Feb 25th, 1990: Mark Martin finishes first at Richmond, leading the final 16 laps of the Pontiac Excitement 400. Martin's Roush Racing Ford is docked 46 points and crew chief Robin Pemberton is fined 40,000 when Nascar officials find an unapproved carburetor spacer plate. Martin is allowed to keep the win.

Feb 26th, 1956: Tim Flock outruns and outlasts a huge 76-car field to score his second straight win in the Daytona Beach Nascar event. African-American driver Charlie Scott posts a 19th-place finish.

Feb 26th, 1961: Marvin Panch takes the lead 13 laps from the finish and wins the third annual Daytona 500. Panch cruises into first place when teammate Fireball Roberts blows his engine while holding a commanding lead.

Feb 26th, 1967: USAC star Mario Andretti leads the final 33 laps and wins the Daytona 500. It is Andretti's first Nascar win.

Feb 26th, 1984: Ricky Rudd posts a heart-warming victory in the 400-lapper at Richmond Fairgrounds raceway. Rudd was battered and bruised after a crash in Daytona's Busch clash invitational race two weeks earlier. Rudd's Bud Moore Ford finishes 3.2 seconds ahead of Darrell Waltrip.

Feb 27th, 1949: A second experimental Strictly Stock Late Model race is added to the three-event racing card at Broward Speedway. Benny Georgeson drives a 1947 Buick to victory in the 10 mile contest. Roadsters and Sports Cars are the headlining attraction, but much interest is focused on the new Strictly Stock event. Bob Flock wins the roadster race at an average speed of 104.5 mph.

Feb 27th, 1955: Tim Flock is declared the winner of the 160 mile Daytona Beach race when Fireball Roberts' Buick is disqualified on a technicality. Flock wins for team owner Carl Kiekhaefer, who makes his maiden voyage in Nascar a successful one.

Feb 27th, 1965: Ned Jarrett wins the 100-mile race at Spartanburg by an incredible 22 laps. Only 16 cars start the race. Independent driver G. C. Spencer finishes second despite only completing 178 of the 200 laps.

Feb 27th, 1966: Richard Petty overcomes a two-lap deficit and wins the Daytona 500 in a blowout. Petty is a full lap in front of runner-up Cale Yarborough when a thunderstorm halts the race after 198 of the scheduled 200 laps.

Feb 27th, 1994: In Rusty Wallace's second start in a ford, he rides to victory in the Goodwrench 500 at Rockingham. Wallace and the Roger Penske team switched from pontiacs to fords during the off-season.

March 7th, 1935: Sir Malcolm Campbell guides his five-ton Bluebird down the sands of Daytona Beach at 276.82 mph in a record speed run. The historic event marks the close of speed trials on the Daytona Beach shore.

March 7th, 1993: Davey Allison leads all but four of the final 157 laps and cruises to an easy win at Richmond. It would be the last win in Davey's career.

March 7th, 1999: Jeff Burton passes his brother Ward with 10 laps remaining and wins at Las Vegas. The siblings battle side-by-side for five laps before Jeff passes Ward. Mike Skinner takes the lead in the Nascar point standings with a fourth place finish.
