I still have the trophy, from the very first race ever at Longridge, when I set the Special Saloon 1.litre Lap Record. I remember it used to get very hot in the car, on that tight little track. Shame its gone. I do have a few nice photographs, but cannot upload them can I? I have my own library of photographs on my pc.

Gerry,
Apologies for the slow response  if you need some help in posting photos, give me a PM.

The neighbours are beginning to complain about the noises from our house- it is the bottom of photographic barrels being scraped. Much as it goes against the grain, I'm going to have to resort to posing colour shots soon. :well:

....waiting for Mr Arron to reply with car types, drivers names etc. etc :)

Looks like a couple of Mallocks, a Lotus? and ?

I wish I'd got to Longridge before it became a Caravan Site!!

Now that's an early shot, Pete - the first season maybe?

Reading through some old Autosports recently I noticed that David Orbell was the outright circuit record holder in his Mallock U2 for a while.

I was in the area recently and enjoyed a damned good meal in the Derby Arms. I didn't visit the caravan park though.

That must be a unique situation, surely?

Fairly rare I would agree, Simon. Although having said that I'm pretty certain I can remember Geoff Friswell being the outright lap record holder at Cadwell Park for a time in his Mallock, although obviously there were (and still are I imagine) restrictions as to the engine sizes permitted there.

Orbell was very quick after a year or 2 in that car, Mark & Simon, a U2 Mk 16 I think. Didn't he come into racing from sprinting in the mid-70s, he was from Cambridge as I recall? By the late 70s he was as fast as most in that car, so I'm not surprised he had the Longridge record.

Interesting. There are definite similarities Phil !!

Just had a look on Google maps and there it is with a white vehicle seemingly rounding the corner in your first picture. There appear to be other sites in the area of a suitable nature for a circuit of a similar ilk as well should Longton & District, Lancashire Automobile Club, Liverpool Motor Club, Mid-Cheshire, etc., etc decide to do something...

Did #886 ("Topper") once finish fifth in a Libre race at Longridge, after an epic tussle with Joe Applegarth's Brabham BT23C?

Indeed .....just ahead of Peter Dugdale's delayed March 733

Clearly not the Warton in Lancashire that I know (less than 20 miles from Longridge), where we declared an emergency and crashed in a semi-controlled fashion some years ago.
Is that Topper Harley? He never got over Macho Grande.

Where is this place with limestone escarpments?

There are 2 Wartons, one near Lytham where BAe Systems ahve their huge plant. The other is just outside Carnforth, where I think Phil took these pics.

Not the sharpest image I've ever taken - and scanned from a print with more grain than Kellogg's - but it illustrates what was then a fairly recent Formula One car in action at Longridge: David Render's Lotus 76 participating in the Longton & DMC sprint on March 20 1977. The modern equivalent would be a Red Bull RB5 appearing at Curborough (or, better still, Longridge) this season.

Render's direct opposition included another 1974 grand prix car, the Token (crashed heavily by John Ravenscroft), plus Len Cartmill and David Flanagan (shared Chevron B28), Peter Kirkby (Lola T142), Alan Newton (F2 Huron), Paul Edwards (Brabham BT38), Richard White (McLaren M10B), Dave Harris (McRae GM1), Simon Riley (Brabham BT33) and David Hartley's 3.5 Buick-powered Brabham BT18. Peter Nelson's turbocharged Ford Anglia was entered, too, albeit in a diifferent class...

The Token may have been well built ......but it came off second best when it took on the barriers and the rock face of the quarry

Simon, firstly do you have the official results from the above meeting? If so could you scan and email them to me?

Secondly the British Sprint Championship no longer visits Curborough (NB the Longridge event in question was the first round of the BSC in 1977) so really the "modern equivalent" would be a Red Bull RB5 appearing at Kames!

Sorry, Steve, I have the programme (two sheets of double-sided A4, handed out free at the gate) but didn't note the results.

And I don't know enough about the British Sprint Championship to make accurate contemporary analogies!

Probably right, Dan. Like many a March, I'm sure it contained mongrel elements. It was listed as a 742, though. And I'm sure that's a completely authentic Bedford CA...

Is it my imagination or do the F2's (?) single seaters always run anticlock wise and the saloons always run clockwise, something I noticed at Mendips Raceway last year ?

If so how / why did that come about ?

Final off topic question do they play Mouldy Old Dough over the tannoy before each race starts at Longbridge or is that a Mendips thing ?

I think they probably played Strawbs' I'm a Union Man at Longbridge. At Longridge, we didn't hear much more than the rustling wind and, during the summer, the ice cream van's dulcet chime. Can't speak for the musical output at Warton, but Mouldy Old Dough usually precedes banger races at Wimbledon, although they have alternative tunes for other categories. And yes, there are distinct clockwise and anti-clockwise short-oval categories. Not sure why.

And now, back to 1977, when Tonight's the Night by Rod bloody Stewart probably featured on the car radio during the homeward journey.

Racing Direction
All formulas race in a clockwise direction, except F1, Superstox, Legends, Rebels and F2's.The cars that drive clockwise in this country do so because 99.9% of the cars are right hand driver, and
safety is paramount to all involved. Therefore, whilst racing in a clockwise direction, the driver is further away from the wall or fence side.

F1, F2, Superstox, Legends and Rebels are different, because originally, they came from American cars, which were left hand drive, and to keep the drivers away from the fence/wall, they went the other
direction - anti-clockwise. Since then, these formulas have changed, and there is no right or left hand drive, all drivers sit in the middle of the car.

From the Scottish Stock Car website.....you are never too old to learn :)

This shot illustrates perfectly those races we used to have when the Fords went in a clockwise direction and all others went anti-clock. For some reason the idea did not seem to catch on.

Bell Vue stock cars always used to play Young Girl by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap and Paint it Black by the Stones.

The Escort is not quite sure which way it wants to go.
as for safety? with those stockcars having the driver on the iside of the car is better for weight distribution but makes the driver more vulnerable with a n inside pass as it is the drivers door that gets the first hit!

Link to the "old days " at Longridge found at Three Sisters yesterday at a bike Meeting.

The organising Club Preston and District Motorcycle Club were the mainstay of the bike racing at Longridge from 1974 until its closure in 1979

These bikes were probably running around in period at the same time Warren Booth and Alan Stringer were winning races in the quarry

My mother only went to one F1 race (the 1963 Oulton Park Gold Cup) and on the way home I asked her what she thought of the race. She said that the drivers weren't that good as they had no oncoming traffic to deal with and what should happen is that half the field should run clockwise and the other half anticlockwise. Oh and she wanted to be sat at approximately half way round the lap!

The kerbing was made from concrete in hessian bags- nobody crossed the white line at Longridge- perhaps that is what is needed next season when the daft regulation comes int force.

I competed at the first meeting in April 1971 and always enjoyed racing there but sadly only remember it as the place Tony Saville had his fatal accident.

I race my home built kart at the next meeting, very mindful of this sad event.

Very interesting to read this old thread; sadly some of the contributors are no longer with us. It is a shame that so many of the photographs no longer show up; victims of changing forum software I guess, I certainly haven’t removed any of mine, yet they are disappeared.
The link to the Longridge Motor Racing Facebook page in the immediately preceding post still works and is really worth following. Only this week I discovered that there was a karting club in Morcambe and Heysham area and I’ve put a link on their website and hopefully we’ll get some early karting shots of Longridge.
Nigel Mansell, when asked which was the most dangerous track he had ever driven, nominated Morecambe- not only did it have a rock face it also had a vertical drop into the sea; in fact some of the track fell into the sea due to cliff erosion!
