Columbia Pictures has acquired the screen rights to Michael Cannell’s upcoming book The Limit and set Tobey Maguire to produce and star in the film about rival Grand Prix drivers. Anthony Peckham will write the script.

Limit tells the story of real-life friends and rivals Phil Hill and Wolfgang von Trips, two Grand Prix drivers on the Ferrari team, who are pitted against each other during the 1961 Drivers Championship. Maguire is attached to play Hill.

Maguire and Jenno Topping will produce for Maguire Entertainment, and Cathy Schulman (The Illusionist) will produce for Mandalay Pictures, with Scarlett Lacey (Save the Last Dance) involved in a producing capacity as well.

Peckham, who previously scripted the Michael Douglas thriller Don’t Say a Word, has four big films on the horizon. He wrote the upcoming Clint Eastwood film The Human Factor, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, the Denzel Washington action flick The Book of Eli and The Tourist, which George Clooney is attached to star in.

The Limit will be published this fall by the Hachette Publishing division Twelve.

You mean having watched every racing movie ever made? That is always the plot.

The mind shudders at the prospect of this movie. We all know how WE would want it to be, but I fear that the odds of Hollywood doing it right are virtually nil. The prospect of the great, wonderful, and gentle Phil Hill being depicted as anything other that as he actually was is distressing. We can hope for the best, but fear for the worst. :(

"Tell me, Peter, do you get tired?" And that is from one of the better racing movies. As I said, the mind shudders.

Butchered quotes make me shudder. The line is ....."Pete, do you ever get tired, of the driving?"

.....and the quote in your tagline is wrong as well. Delaney says "When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting. "

This is sooo not gonna be a good idea. The true story of Hill and von Trips as teammates and rivals is interesting, dramatic, tragic.....but you know Hollywierd will take it and turn it around until it's so far from the truth it'll be unrecognizable. And yeah.... they'll have both drivers in love with the same woman. Imagine how Hill's family is gonna feel about that.

Also the story is perfect for the screaming hysterical woman running across the track or being restrained at the ambulance scene.

I thought it was Nuvolari who said it. There you go.

Every time someone announces a new motor racing movie, I have hope. Then it's dashed. Except by "Cars". But I'm not giving up yet.

They might do better to make "Toly's Ghost" and have Phil as a minor character. That way, fewer toes might be trodden-upon.

Toby Maguire as Cal Carrington and somebody suitably Germanic and suave as Toly. Arnold Schwartzenegger? At least they were both in love with Gina La Scala. And you'd get the Scarab story in there as well, to an extent.

This just cannot be good....For decades Phil Hill was ignored by the news/entertainment cabal. Now that he's gone they want to make a (sure to be) cheesey movie about him. I have NO confidence that Hollyweird is capable of making a movie worthy of these two men. A well produced documenatry would have been far preferable.

Out of curiousity, which F1 drivers stories do you think would translate well to the big screen?

A few I can think of........

David Purley

James Hunt

Gilles Villenuve

Gunnar Nilsson

Marquis de Portago

Peter Collins

I have always thought that the last few months of Didier Pironi's career were more dramatic than anything Hollywood could come up with.

Stereotypes - Phil with the American crew-cut military-style academy education - 'Taffy' the Hitler Youth mit der 'von'... Mr Ferrari refusing to name a number one driver between them - many spectators dead - Hollywood drooling. Uh-huh... Or is this merely stereotyping the movie maker? On past evidence one must fear the worst.

Gilles Villenuve

I wonder who they would get to play Buford in this scene:

I had several people as crew and we had several girls. He was alone. I was running a Penske operation compared to him.

You guys. . . so many negative waves! Let's try to be a little positive. Here's a few reasons this may be a good thing.

Last count, the Grand Prix Out takes thread is up to 25 pages. Clearly, new material is needed.

New Dino 156s will need to be built. A whole bunch of grid filling cars will need to be purchased. There's another 10 pages of rivet / spoke / exhaust pipe counting right there.

In order to achieve maximum accuracy, demand for Grand Prix historians will hit an all-time high. Time to get the CVs ready for mailing boys.

I will concede there is one major downside. Given the current trend of Hollywood marketing types to want to build buzz for films through niche internet forums, expect an infiltration of over-enthusiastic Americans gushing how wonderful The Limit is going to be. :drunk: :stoned:

Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire has signed up for F1 biopic The Limit, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie is based on Michael Cannell's new book Limit, which tells the story of real-life friends and racing rivals Phil Hill and Wolfgang von Trips.

The pair were pitted against each other in 1961, when they both drove for the Ferrari team. Maguire will play the role of Hill.

Maguire is also producing the project for Columbia alongside Jenno Topping and Cathy Schulman.

Tony Peckham, who wrote Clint Eastwood's upcoming feature The Human Factor and Guy Ritchie's new Sherlock Holmes, has been tapped to pen the script.

The two best fall outside F1. Achille Varzi and Ed Elisian.

Within F1...Graham Hill. No-hoper given no chance, heartbreaking retirement just when it looks like he's going to win his first GP, a title at the last gasp, denied another at an even laster gasp, rescues a team from its uppers and takes a second title, nearly dies, wins Le Mans when everyone's written him off, then...the sequel with Damon.

Were Phil Hill and Taffy "good friends" or just contemporaries? I have a pictorial biography of Taffy in German, and Phil Hill is not exactly prominent.

They got on pretty well - as well as most Formula 1 team-mates from entirely different cultures ever would have. I think in his heart Phil felt he could handle Trips. I suspect in his heart Trips felt he could handle Phil. That's how racing drivers tick.
