A fine driver and easily one of the most under-rated Grand Prix drivers of the 1960's. Perhaps not a consistent potential winner, but a very solid (as noted above) driver. But again, it would be harsh to simply limit him to Grand Prix, as he had excellent results & years of success elsewhere.

Probably second only to DSG.

I only know of him from reading about him , but he seemed a solid driver . I've seen where he retired after an unfortunate accident in SA , an F2 race I think it was . Did he ever race again after that ?

Apart from Jody Scheckter, he is the only South African who scored points in World Championship F1 races.
Will keep you updated on funeral arrangements, whenever I receive details in this regard.

Was Neville Lederle not South African?Apart from Jody Scheckter, he is the only South African who scored points in World Championship F1 races.
RIP Tony, and sincere condolences to his family and friends. Like others here I was a bit of a fan of his when he raced in F1.

Very sad news; Tony was very high on my list of favourites when I was a teenager.
Probably second only to DSG.
Agree on both counts, Barry.
Another link with the lovely days of the 1.5 litre formula has gone.

Not just an obituary - a great insight into 1960s top line motor racing.Obituary on Motorsport SA's website:

Very interesting, thanks for the link Hieronymous. Another link to the 1960s lost, RIP to another hero of the old Spa, Nurburgring and Rheims.

Tony was second to Dan in 1962 - my favourite Grand Prix result up to that point......

Second that... a tremendously interesting read!
As David McKinney has already posted, he came here for the '63 International races in a Lola and raced in the shadow of John Surtees.
Just out of curiosity, is this accounted for in the 'Ultimate price' thread?
Thereafter he returned to South Africa permanently, taking in one final GP race with Reg Parnell in a Lotus 25 in his home GP in 1965. He gave up the sport after a bad accident when a steering knuckle broke in the Willment Brabham BT10-Lotus at the Natal Winter Trophy held at Roy Hesketh in June 1965 in which a young spectator standing in a prohibited area lost his life.
I guess the death left a nasty taste in his mouth to overcome as well as the injuries. Yet he rose above all that and did what he did later in life. 71... way too young.

72, Ray, as he was born in February 1937. But the same sentiment applies.

A great read, thanks. One is left with the impression that there was more to come from Tony's racing career, had he wanted to do so.
I was at Hesketh in '65 when Tony had his last accident and for a while had kept one or two pieces of red coloured fibreglass from the Brabham (which was in Willment colours) I had picked up afterwards (as a young lad) but disposed of them after thinking about the gravity of the incident.
Does anyone have any recent pictures of Tony to post?

Hello Friends,
I want to complete my file, do you know where Tony MAGGS passed away ?
Thanks
Well, the last I heard in May, he was living out the last days of his live at his costal home in Hermanus. Considering that's where the memorial is for him.. I presume it was there.

Tony moved away from Hermanus some two-three years ago and lived near Teslaarsdal in the Hemel-en-Aarde Vallei region.

Just as a footnote, I was at the meeting at Roy Hesketh the day Tony had his accident. In fact, I witnessed the accident from just outside the prohibited area where that youngster was watching. Sad day.
