I really really wish someone would tell Santander to piss off with their crappy trophy's

I'd be absolutely gutted after winning a race like that and someone hands me a silver Santander logo and a lump of wood

Bring back real trophys!!!!

Well +1, it's quite terrible. If they have to give them anyway for bernies moniez just give them at 1 race per season...

the trophy reflects the make-up of Santander, itself. that lump of wood is actually compressed paper, comprised of non-performing loans. the silver body is hollow, with toxic mortgage-based securities hidden inside. all off-balance sheet, of course. :)

but, yes, what a piece of prosaic corporate junk.

A great win preserved in the amber of our memories with Alonso holding aloft the crassest turd statue ever to commemorate the choice of filthy lucre over dignity. Someone just **** on my sport.

The trophies are the least of it.... FI overall is too dependent on Santander.

Their money is obviously welcome, particularly in these times... but there are risks associated with one sponsor being so pre-eminent.

I understood that it is actually in the rules that trophies presented to drivers and team representative, should actually resemble a trophy or cup, or isn't it? So why are these hideous marketing ploys still allowed?

They do seem to have a fairly loose interpretation on what constitutes a trophy these days. A plinth with any old rubbish stuck on it seems to do the trick.

Those stupid blue recycled things from Brazil last year, for instance.

What's particularly odd about those Santander monstrosities is that they almost certainly don't comply with the Sporting Regulations, which read:

"The trophies, which must be in the form of traditional cups, will be provided by the ASN and must show:
a) the FIA Formula 1 World Championship official logo
b) the official name of the event
c) the driver’s position."

They are pretty plain, but not too bad if you look at them for the shape they are rather than connecting them with the company logo.

Still better looking than the blue plastic steering wheels, or the old Tio Pepe trophies

they are so gorgeous, they look like one of those paperweights I got from Santander Private Banking.

PS funny aside but ... the Santander trophies are actually illegal as per the FIA's rules regarding trophies (yeah Mosley made trophy rules too)

4. TROPHIES
Only 4 trophies will be presented during the podium ceremony:
a) winning driver
b) a representative of the winning constructor
c) second driver
d) third driver.
The trophies, which must be in the form of traditional cups, will be provided by the ASN and must show:
a) the FIA Formula 1 World Championship official logo
b) the official name of the event
c) the driver's position.
The height of the trophies shall be:
a) winner's and constructor's trophies - no less than 50cm and no more than 65cm high
b) second and third drivers' trophies - no less than 35cm and no more than 45cm high
The maximum weight per trophy must not exceed 5 kilos. Trophies must be of a design that is capable of being handled and transported without damage.

I guess that rules out the Australian GP's Jack Brabham steering wheels too.

The rule for trophies should be that they cannot merely be representations of company logos. Actually I think there should be no visible sponsorship aspect of the trophies.

The Brabham wheels are good.

Half the trophies fall foul of those rules, I don't think the FIA even bother to enforce it. Not that we need rules for trophies in the first place.

And yeah those Santander ones are baaad. :(

Well I wouldn't worry to much about it as I seriously doubt there is any chance of it happening.

Well maybe just for safety reasons. I really wouldn't like to fall on one of those Spanish Grand Prix spike trophies.

You should do a little research of Santander's movements, specially during the crisis and nowadays before claming such idiocy.

Regarding the trophies, nothing I could care less. I never take notice of driver's trophies at all.

Petition required! I don't mind them taking second/third but the winning trophy should be a spectacular Silverstone-spec proper piece of silverware.

I seem to recall there being a rule somewhere that a trophy could not represent the corporate logo of any company involved with the race.

Lol, I heard Alonso buys his underwear from Marks and Spencers, I suppose we are not allowed to say anything bad against them too?

Anyway, yes the trophies are awful, but really, does anyone care that much? I doubt the drivers even bother to keep them anymore do they?

Silverstone and Monaco are still the best last true ones. And I love how the Silverstone winner trophie is the best and different to the runner ups, as it should be.

I think Silverstone has a historic winner's trophy, and then 2nd and 3rd are Santander trophies.

My problem with the Santander trophies is that they are generic.

Who cares about the trophys. Grand Prix racing went downhill when they stopped presenting the winners laurel wreath. If you don't know what I am talking about, check out some winners photos from the 30's, 50's and 60's. German GP winners had to be almost superhuman. After 4 hour or more racing on the REAL Nurburgring they then had to stand on the podium with the worlds biggest laurel wreath around their necks. Legs must have been ready to give out under the strain!.

I always used to like the Hungarian one, the plate with a painting on. Something a bit different and presumably a reminder of where you won it. Shame to see it was just an Eni/Agip logo this year, but still, at least it was stylised a bit and not just a zero effort straight copy. Actually looking in the Autosport gallery I notice they had a (modern) steering wheel for a few years too. Which makes sense at a motor race.

Trophies should have an historic value, one different for every GP and without sponsors references. How nice is to visit a team trophy room and be able to spot them without having to read the name on it.

Cut the childish trolling. I have no problem at people saying bad things. My problem is with people saying things that are not true. You are allowed to say all the things you feel like to, but I'm allowed to debate them if I want.

I just pointed out something obvious. How can someone say Santander is a crap company? I just asked the poster to do a little research about the company before claming such a thing.

Thing is, Spain surely has dozens of top-class artists who could come up with something intriguing, it is the country of Picasso, Goya, Miro and Gaudi after all, and would offer services gratis for the publicity. Shame Santander doesn't do something along those lines.

The problem is not Santander, they are looking for publicity and they put their logo as a trophy, obvious. The problem is that they are allowed to do that.

They could get more publicity though by getting an artist to do some sort of creation, like the diamond people do at Monaco.
