Simon if you see this thread, .....I'd be delighted to include it in the blog. quote
Do not take a chance on whether ST reads this thread. Send him a PM. I know he is more than receptive to any info about, or especially photos of, the Stovebolt HWM. He readily welcomes ALL new details, even though he has researched the car to the proverbial nth degree, and works on the basis of "info better twice than not at all"

David McKinney has summed it up well. Bill Pollack devotes about three pages to the HWM stovebolt special in his book. Bill raced it in 1956 for Tom Carstens at Pebble Beach and at Seattle. I would say the color photo is from Pebble Beach (The Don Meacham B&W photos are very interesting also.)

Thanks Mark, I had no idea that Bill only did the two races in the Stovebolt Special.
07 08 12 Photo Carlyle Blackwell, Published Courtesy Blackwell Archive, for sales enquiry's please e-mail infoATpsychoontyres.co.uk and your contact details will be forwarded to the Blackwell Archive.
For reference here is the full frame version I was sent by Steve Arnaudin, I have a suspicion like several other photo's by Carlyle on this thread it was set up the tyres treads on the front wheels look static but given the shutter speeds allowed by that glorious California sunshine I could be wrong, never having been with in a thousand miles of California I'll go with the expert opinion and settle for Pebble Beach.

"Rounding the last turn at Pebble Beach is Bill Pollack in the latest Carstens bomb, the HWM-Chev V8. A complete breakdown of the car starts on p12. Ektachrome is by Carlyle Blackwell."
The car is given 8 pages of coverage with 17 b&w pictures. The pictures in the article are credited to Sukalac, Borgeson, and Christi, NOT Blackwell, whose picture does indeed appear to be static/staged, not an action shot.

From Martin Rudow's "Long Straights and Hairpins" on Tom Carstens and the HWM:
"...A Vic Edelbrock race-prepared 5-liter Chevy V-8 was installed and the suspension and body prepared with help from Eddie Kuzma, at the time one of the country's top indy car builders..."
Vic Edelbrock, Jr. told me that he was there when the engine was being done. Carstens and the Edelbrocks were very close friends.
I believe Simon Taylor told me that it was the Sports Cars Illustrated photo that got him wanting the car!

Bill does not recall the photo shoot with Blackwell and the HWM, but the location would have to have been Pebble Beach.
According to a record of Bill's races compiled by Michael Lynch & Jim Sitz, the HWM Stovebolt Special is serial #FB102 (as opposed to the 49-001 referred to at Racing Sports Cars and in Post #40 here).

Think about it - unclear punching somewhere could make the 4 look like an F, the 9 like a B, and the '/' like a 1...
Just a thought
