I recently acquired a youngster's autograph album containing around 40 signatures. The young man lived at Melbourne village in Derbyshire, England. The album appears to have been collected in 1936 at the British Empire Trophy meeting in April and at the August Bank Holiday motor cycle races. I posted the 'bike racers' autograph on our sister forum yesterday and all have been identified.

Most of the field including the winner - Dick Seaman have signed the album - The Earl Howe, Prince Bira, Raymond Mays, Freddy Dixon, Bill Cotton, J.D “Doc” Benjafield, Arthur Dobson, Chris Staniland, Cyril Paul, Norman Black, A.P. “Ginger” Hamilton, W.L.Handley, W.B.Everitt, E.Maclure, H.J. Aldington, W.G. Everitt, D.L. Briault and more to be identified. Here are a couple of interesting pages.

What about this one? The top signature is E. Maclure but who are the lower two?....

....and is the bottom signature here Noel Brockelbank's (or should it be Brocklebank) who raced Bugatti # 29 in the Empire Trophy race?

Grasping at straws a bit, but on the second pic could the shorter one be AFP Fane, signing as "Fane Fane"? And the other one Lindsay Eccles, signing as "AHL Eccles"?

Not at all. I thought it was Fane's signature as well but I cannot find an example to compare it with anywhere on-line.

Eccles is a possibility, driving Bugatti #32 in the Empire Trophy race.

I went back to Jenks' book " From Chain Drive to Turbocharger: the A.F.N. story" He discusses Fane at some length.

"...later that year (1931) his mother advised him to change his name from Agabeg to Fane, so the young undergraduate became "Alfred Fane Peers Fane" and began to sign his name as "Fane Fane".....due to the rather flambouyant flourish with which he wrote, the autograph could often be misinterpreted as Tony Fane or Tom Fane..."

In addition on page 276 of Jenks' book there is a small photo of Fane with his signature - sorry, too poor a photo to reproduce here - but it looks like I do have A.F.P. Fane's signature in the 1936 Donington album :)

Both Maclure brothers were racing Rileys against each other in the '36 British Empire Trophy when the album was signed.

"Percy" Maclure is the better known of the two, having raced in all 4 pre-war Donington GPs. I think this signature is that of Edgar Maclure who was driving Riley #8 that day.
