in the late 80's (87/88?) Autosport carried a small article about some team, possibly Middlebridge running a F1 car in the later half of the season. It was sponsored by Trussadi and was interesting in that it was black on one side and white on the other, split along the centre line. The other interesting thing was it was a Benetton.
Anyone know more about it, like why it didn't race (I believe it was probably the FiA) etc.

It was a 1986 Benetton-BMW, to have been run in the second half of 1987, and driven by Emanuele Pirro.
The FIA wouldn't allow it, due to the rule that teams must either build their own car, or have exclusive use of a car built especially for them.

was this Benetton BWM team not run by
- John Mac Donald from the RAM team,
after that his March/RAM team stopt in 1985, and there was no money for a comback with Thachwell in 1986
and
- Cecialia Ekstroem who will also start a F1 team in 1986
with the "Ekstroem F1 Racing Team" drive by Baldi
???

Boniver, if I recall that Ekström episode correctly, it seems that lady was being a bit optimistic. Back then there was a big article in the Swiss 'Motorsport aktuell', need to find that one again! Have fuzzy memories of quite a story connected to that...

I see that the picture of the Trussardi-Benetton has gone missing.
I have various stories that the team was only going to run in the second half of the season, which event(s) did they enter. Are there any pics of the team. I have a pic of what I believe to be Pirro's racesuit. which when I figure out how to post it will do so.

If I had a scanner, I could put in a pic from an old issue of Autosport I have lying around, but anyway Trussardi (actually Middlebridge racing if I remember rightly - who did of course eventually break into F1, in a half hearted way as owners of Brabham) tried to enter Pirro for the 1987 Italian Grand Prix - I don't know if this was to have been a one-off drive or the start of a campaign but either way, the entry was refused.
The 1987 Italian Grand Prix *did* end up being the debut appearance for the Coloni Team, though, as well as being possibly Nicola Larini's first race. Pirro would have to wait a while longer until Briatore's 'coup' against Peter Collins at Benetton, which led to his replacing Johnny Herbert

The first race meeting for Nicola, at least, as he dnq'd. He had to wait three weeks for his first start at Jerez.

Wasn't there also some crazy story that because of the black and white quartered livery it was not the same each side and that was against some rule...It seemed mad at the time but remember BAR...

I think in addition to Pirro at Monza they wanted to do 4 races, I think Aguri Suzuki was in line for the drive at Suzuka, as he was a middlebridge driver at the time IIRC
Also that year Hoshino or Geoff Lees were rumored for a 3rd Williams in Japan.
