For three years running four of the top five teams have had the same driver lineups. Next year that finally ends as Lewis moves from McLaren to Mercedes so I thought it was a good time to look at how things have gone according to the driver standings.

Unsurprisingly, given that they've won the last three WDC and WCC championships Red Bull takes the honors in aggregate.

Alonso's total being significantly higher than Webber and the McLaren boys shows just how good he's been over this time period as well.

Alonso is the only driver who has shown improvement year over year. The rest have either fluctuated or have steadily declined.

With this trend maybe next season will be Alonso's third championship!

I think this highlights how unlucky Hamilton has been this year. I assume that the majority of the people on this board will agree that Lewis's worst year (in terms of his driving, not the car) was 2011...yet he scored less points this year!

Pretty obvious how much Webber and Massa have underperformed over the past 3 seasons. Schumacher as well I should say.

With Fernando at his peak this year and Hamilton fading and headed to a midfield team, the door is wide open for a Vettel 4X.

I'm no MS fan but thats a little bit harsh, the first 18 months he wasn't great to say the least but since then, this season in particular, he has done a pretty good job (bar a few brain fade moments) and has suffered from chunks of bad luck.

I am as big a Michael Schumacher fan as you will find, unfortunately in his return he was not carrying himself as a full/full/full racer anymore, not that he concisely drove worse than he was capable of, simply that his overall full encompassing interest in life was no longer winning in F1, and being just a little bit off show immediately in the results. Yes there are bad luck, yes there are explanations for some of his non-scores. But being outscored 3 seasons in a row, after eating second drivers for a career, is unfortunately a results-wise underperformance.

However nobody gets the keys to my car - I love my car and I've seen these guys drive...

The weirdest thing is that Mercedes overall score has gone worse each year. In 2010, when Mercedes had bought the team, it was said that now the lack of funds and personnel cutting era is over, the team has stabilized and will start to grow. But it has gone worse each year, incredible.

Either way, Merc have everything they need to produce a WDC challenge, they only thing they don't have anymore is excuses...

Is it so hard to give credit to both Mclaren drivers?

Button was superb in 2011, delivering many podiums and a few nice wins in a season that Vettel dominated. Hamilton meanwhile was stuck in a rut that he couldn't seem to get out of, clashing with Massa at every other race and looking mentally fragile.

In 2012, Hamilton came back strong from his Melbourne defeat and proceeded to not only destroy Button in qualifying, but often be right up there in the races. Button had some shockers got lost with the set up for a while, but even after that he was not a match for Hamilton. With a few less DNFs he would have been 50+ points higher this year.

Both guys have had good years with the team, both are more than capable of having good years again.
