For three years running four of the top five teams have had the same driver lineups. Next year that finally ends as Lewis moves from McLaren to Mercedes so I thought it was a good time to look at how things have gone according to the driver standings.

Unsurprisingly, given that they've won the last three WDC and WCC championships Red Bull takes the honors in aggregate.

Alonso's total being significantly higher than Webber and the McLaren boys shows just how good he's been over this time period as well.

Total (2012, 2011, 2010):

929 Vettel (281 392 256)
787 Alonso (278 257 252)
679 Webber (179 258 242)
672 Button (188 270 214)
657 Hamilton (190 227 240)
384 Massa (122 118 144)
324 Rosberg (93 89 142)
197 Schumacher (49 76 72)

Constructors totals

1608 Red Bull
1329 McLaren
1171 Ferrari
521 Mercedes

and yet, i'd give Lewis the keys to my car ahead of Jenson even if he had 9 of 10 fingers missing.

Love these dudes - they have brightened many a weekend and those numnbers are pretty consistent with that - add Kimi.

However nobody gets the keys to my car - I love my car and I've seen these guys drive...

Pretty obvious how much Webber and Massa have underperformed over the past 3 seasons. Schumacher as well I should say.

I can't remember a 3-year-period, when F1 was so constant with minimal changes. And looks like 2013 will be in the same vein., Hamilton goes to Mercedes, but one would expect McLaren to remain a front-runner and Mercedes still a bit behind.

Maybe the last relatively constant 3-y-period was 1998-2000. 1998 and 2000 McLaren and Ferrari dominated, 1999 others were a little bit closer. Hakkinen and Schumacher fought out for the title twice (like now Vettel and Alonso), would have been the case in 1999 too if Schumi didn't get injured. But in 2001 the picture already started to change with rapid improvement from Williams and decline of McLaren/Hakkinen. Who is gonna be the gamechanger in 2013? Maybe Lotus, who emerged already in 2012 actually. Raikkonen in third is like Frentzen in third in the Jordan in 1999. :p

I think that Mercedes has not shown us anything to be placed in the company of the Red Bulls, McLarens, or Ferrari.

Interesting stats however.

787 Alonso (278 257 252)

Alonso is the only driver who has shown improvement year over year. The rest have either fluctuated or have steadily declined.

With this trend maybe next season will be Alonso's third championship!

657 Hamilton (190 227 240)

I think this highlights how unlucky Hamilton has been this year. I assume that the majority of the people on this board will agree that Lewis's worst year (in terms of his driving, not the car) was 2011...yet he scored less points this year!

Kinda hard to improve upon 392 though isn't it?

Thanks very interesting
Shows how outstanding Vettel and Alonso have been
and how close Button, Hammy and Webber are

Massa shocking really but his recent form has been hopeful
Mercedes no-hopers really

Yeah, we had a different amount of races, this year more teams were competitive at the first half of the season. You can't compare each years. This is not a trend

That's almost 21 points per race or more than 82 percent of the available points. It would be hard to improve on that!

I will bet my house that one of these 3 drivers will win 2013 WDC - Vettel, Alonso or Button.

With Fernando at his peak this year and Hamilton fading and headed to a midfield team, the door is wide open for a Vettel 4X.

I'm no MS fan but thats a little bit harsh, the first 18 months he wasn't great to say the least but since then, this season in particular, he has done a pretty good job (bar a few brain fade moments) and has suffered from chunks of bad luck.

Fernando was at his *best* this year, not necessarily his *peak*. But agree that the Vettle/RB combo will be, once again, the hot set up next year.

240 > 227 > 190 = fading away, Hamilton is a spent force, but he'll always have his lucky championship to look back on when he retires.

so easy for haters to ignore the real facts isn't it!
while even the impartial admit lewis has had his best season ever only to be let down by fate.

BTW WDC are never lucky when your competitors admit you won it in the second best car :rotfl:

Even though JB ended with more points, if forum members were asked I'm sure 9 out of 10 would say Lewis was the better driver.

I am as big a Michael Schumacher fan as you will find, unfortunately in his return he was not carrying himself as a full/full/full racer anymore, not that he concisely drove worse than he was capable of, simply that his overall full encompassing interest in life was no longer winning in F1, and being just a little bit off show immediately in the results. Yes there are bad luck, yes there are explanations for some of his non-scores. But being outscored 3 seasons in a row, after eating second drivers for a career, is unfortunately a results-wise underperformance.

I can't blame him for this season.

He had so many technical problems in the first half and he was clearly better than Rosberg in the second half of the season but he couldn't make the big points anymore because of the weak car.

Vettel: 281 < 392 > 256

So by your logic Vettel has also hit his peak and will now also start "fading away".

Is it so hard to give credit to both Mclaren drivers?

Button was superb in 2011, delivering many podiums and a few nice wins in a season that Vettel dominated. Hamilton meanwhile was stuck in a rut that he couldn't seem to get out of, clashing with Massa at every other race and looking mentally fragile.

In 2012, Hamilton came back strong from his Melbourne defeat and proceeded to not only destroy Button in qualifying, but often be right up there in the races. Button had some shockers got lost with the set up for a while, but even after that he was not a match for Hamilton. With a few less DNFs he would have been 50+ points higher this year.

Both guys have had good years with the team, both are more than capable of having good years again.

The weirdest thing is that Mercedes overall score has gone worse each year. In 2010, when Mercedes had bought the team, it was said that now the lack of funds and personnel cutting era is over, the team has stabilized and will start to grow. But it has gone worse each year, incredible.

They can build a good car, we saw that at the start of the year, they just hurt themselves with the DDRS system as it gave them large limitations on FW development and they spent too much time trying to work out the tyres instead of developing the car. I'm expecting them to produce a competitive car next year, maybe not a WDC car but points, podiums and the odd win, especially now they've got a known top driver onboard.

Either way, Merc have everything they need to produce a WDC challenge, they only thing they don't have anymore is excuses...

I'm not so sure.

According to this, their 2011 budget was smaller than Lotus' and full EUR 100m smaller than Red Bull's. Knowing the fact how good Lotus are doing recently on a sponsorship ground, I think Mercedes still can have just 5th biggest budget in F1. Their recent results don't surprise me anymore after reading this. They just don't have the money to challenge for championships unless they won't invent something extraordinary.

I agree with your sentiment, but with no driver fault, unreliability/operational issues alone, the figure would in all likelihood be closer to 100 points, if not more.
