If you think back to your memories of Formula One, what is the one thing you miss the most?

I miss the more raw speed in the F1 cars, with the V10.

What are you missing?

Teams like Ensign, Theodore, Osella and ATS, that would congregate around the back of the grid for years, but once in a while would have their day of days and score a decent result. I still curse the drowning of Larini's electrics at Canada in 1989 - he might have won that one for Osella.

One-off drivers who would emerge out of seemingly nowhere, sneak a GP or two and then vanish back into obscurity. Franco Forini, Toshio Suzuki, Philippe Adams. Even better if they DNQ'd, like Naoki Hattori or Enrico Bertaggia.

Helmet designs that were simple, distinctive and sensible. Caffi, Naspetti, Keegan, de Cesaris, Larrauri. All masters of their art.

Gravel traps.

Sunday warmup.

Qually spec engines.

Cars and tyres that were driven till they won, crashed or failed, instead of nursed and gently coaxed round painted carparks.

Sunday warmups

No parc-ferme bullshit.

Pre-2003 qualifying formats (even though the current one is decent and far better than the 2003-2006 experimentations). Low fuel qualifying with freedom of choice for fuel load at start of race.

In-race refuelling.

Tyre wars, even if sometimes the guys I supported were doomed courtesy of their inferior tyres.

Probably the V10's, especially the ones of the 2000's, where they'd run them to max and change them the next session; stupidly expensive, but a fantastic waste of money

I'd never thought I would say this, but I miss refueling. It would give back the real meaning to race strategy, keeping the principles of one tyre-supplier, 2 compund/race weekend. I guess that will not happen though, a real shame.

I genuinely miss the 12 lap qualy system, maybe something could be done to regulate the traffic problems during?

Parc fermé rules in there present form are a farce, IMHO.

Testng. I miss testing. It benefits drivers, and it benefits teams.

If you think back to your memories of Formula One, what is the one thing you miss the most?

The sense of difficultly and impossibility of beating Schumacher's scarlet Ferrari.

Nowadays we recognize that many of Schumi's "great" rivals like his brother, Montoyta and Coulthard were never even top tier drivers anyway! No wonder Schumi had such an easy time! :p

Driver: Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen. Two of the fastest. (Senna, of course a given). But Mika, IMO, was indeed faster than Michael Schumacher on a single lap. I might be nuts on that, but that's what I believe. And, of course, I miss Michael but he "just" retired.
Engine: Ferrari V12.

I miss Darwinistic F1 in general, where things were done to the max and with no compromise. Now it's all socialistic and wimpy. Drivers can hardly fight on track, the cars are slowed down like crazy, engines are getting more and more restricted, cars are getting heavier and heavier, the tracks are getting duller and duller...

I miss silly little things really, like when the lap time info used to be displayed in the language of the country broadcasting the race. I know it makes more sense to be standardised in English for every race, but I found it more quirky and atmospheric. I liked knowing there were 5 tours or vueltas remaining.

I also miss advertising hoardings that actually had something to do with motoring, like seeing Total or Boss or Champion. I also miss onboard cameras that shook and showed how violent the cockpit of an F1 car is, and external shots that showed the speed of the cars - I find the cameras too smooth now, and on huge expanses of tarmac with wide angle shots the cars just don't look like they are moving in as exciting a way. Not to me, anyway.

I miss when teams had numbers allocated, like Williams were 5 & 6, or Ferrari 27 & 28. Again it just seemed more quirky and added to the atmosphere for me. It created more 'iconic' legends I suppose.

I also miss when, if a driver stuffed up a corner, he would end up in the gravel and it was race over.

Its probably just nostalgia and the age I watched F1 at, but little details like that created more atmosphere for me. I find too many details very sanitised and structured, like some of the fun has been sucked out of the sport.

Finally, I miss this;

I miss the world's best drivers having enough flexibility in their schedules and contracts to be able to compete against each other at Riverside and LeMans and Indy and Milwaukee and a few GPs during any year. Or even being able to tackle another series seriously without burning their bridges.

30+ cars and drivers vying for 26 grid slots in qualifying and pre-qualifying. New teams taking a shot at it without having to go through this ridiculous franchise system, and actually having a chance at being reasonably competitive, even pulling off the odd surprise.

They never had then allocated. They switched with the WDC teams. When a team having 5&6 had the reigning champ, the former 1&2, would get 5&6. When the champs them switched, the "first" 5&6 team could end up with 18&19 depending on what number the team with the reigning champ would have. Which would mean that Williams would've had 5&6 in 1997 due to Hill leaving for Arrows. And Ferrari ending up with 9&10, while Arrows would've had the iconic 5&6 from 98 until the end of Arrows life.

Yeah Alesi with a number 27 was always cool, as was Mansell with red 5.

Really love old school ads too, one of the reasons I still love Interlagos is that the hoardings on the climb up the hill still look really primitive and 70's/80's, Imola used to keep a bit of that feeling through Tamburello before it was changed.

Early 90's on boards were brutal looking.

The mika vs michael duel years, 12 laps qualy (the best system imo), circuits without enormous and risk free run offs anywhere, I mean nowadays they can even overtake off circuit (yes I know its not legal, but they can), what the hell... Bring back gravel!
