During Pre-practice qualifying held a few days before official practice sessions, the following drivers took part.

Bernard de Dryver (Ensign 177) & Patrick Neve (March 781S). Autocourse Annual 1978-1979 mentions this in 'Notes on the cars' but does not show what time they achived.

Has anyone seen times what times these drivers achieved?

The Pre-practice qualifying session was held on the Thursday before the Grand Prix. Four drivers qualified for the Practice sessions on Friday and Saturday. They were Bruno Giacomelli (3rd McLaren), Rolf Stommmelen (Arrows), René Arnoux (Martini) and Keke Rosberg (Theodore). Three drivers failed to get through. These were: Hector Rebaque (private Lotus), Arturo Merzario (Merzario) and Brett Lunger (private McLaren).

According to Motorsport afterwards the Belgian organisers "tried to infiltrate two of there own drivers into the system (Neve and de Dryver), but Bernard the Obergruppenführer Ecclestone would have none of it, so the Belgian hopefulls became spectators."

BTW because Tambay wasn't able to drive after injuring his leg in the F2 race at Pau, Lunger was later allowed to practice as well and even qualified for the race in last place.

Bernard de Dryver at the 1978 Belgian Grand Prix did not set a time, he was entered but did not show. And Patrick Neve even though entered and there could not do a run as the car was not available for him.
