There's a big console update imminent for AC, with a bunch of new cars, the Highlands track and a custom championship mode that allows you to select the whole grid of cars including liveries etc. That means that for pretty much the first time, we'll be able to have proper multiclass races with LMP cars against GT3s etc. I'm excited about this, it was always such a shame that Project CARS couldn't do this properly.

PS4 (Maybe even XBox) version of game got new update and nice Scottish country track. I've tried it only with gamepad which is nightmare with Assetto Corsa. I guess I have to dig out wheel for this.

Multi-class racing has been possible in Live for Speed for over 10 years, but not with LMP cars unfortunately. Just between large and small touring cars with significant speed differences. In theory it could also be done between, say, F1 cars and Minis, but I don't think that was ever seriously done by any online leagues. It's such a shame that development on LFS ground to a near halt around that same time. Between all those options, track additions, online skin-sharing and statistics, as well as the fantastic netcode - it was truly ahead of its time. The most disappointing thing is that in some regards, it still is.

But anyway; speaking of being ahead of the rest of the genre, Assetto Corsa's implementation of the Porsche LMP1 cars has been very interesting indeed. The way the hybrid systems work has been very instructive. I imagine the Ferrari F1 car would be similarly interesting, but I haven't gotten around to trying that yet.

I tried the LMP1 Porsche earlier, it is a very odd car.

I could not work how the hybrid system worked. It seemed to be automatic, but I could not override it.

I was at Spa and it just would not engage on the Blanchimont section, yet would be fine after Eau Rouge and after La Source.

I think it seems to be linked to steering angle, and the run to Blanchimont you have lock on all the way.

I certainly had no idea how to link it to a button, I tried a few and none worked

All the big endurance online leagues had that with rFactor and now rFactor 2.

It's automatic and it works on allocation per lap like in real life (although it doesn't seem to be scaled to track length according to WEC tech regulations). If you run out of the allocated hybrid boost per lap you're left with only the engine. You can fiddle with hybrid modes to control how much boost you get, but the actual boost is automatic. I'm guessing you left it in the most aggressive mode. In that case I noticed that at Spa you might run out of allocation anywhere from Stavelot to the last chicane.

If you have the gear/speed/boost/battery indicator up, you'll notice a yellow bar when you drive the 919: that's the per-lap energy allocation. Orange is turbo boost, green is battery level, blue is amount of boost. When the yellow bar runs out, you're done with boost for that lap.

Dunno why it can be so hard to implement really.

well i finally got AC going on a decent PC (decent enough to carry 60fps anyways) and my main impression is how good the tyre model is compared to anything i've raced before* - very surprised at how well the grip-fade-to-understeer (as an example) is conveyed to a seat & a wheel setup.

*i am not part of the tyre modelling team :D

The tyre modelling is great. The last couple of big updates have really transformed it. If your front left is overheating you really feel that loss of grip through your wheel, for example. And the tyres gain and lose temps in a way that seems consistent with reality.

It's now the best tyre modelling in consumer sims IMO. Better than iRacing, better than AMS and obviously a different league to the Codemasters stuff.

likewiuse recently joined the ranks and bought assetto and a steering wheel.

Awesome, tyre model is superb. Ive been lucky enough to find that someone has made my own car as a mod and taking it round the UK tracks I know, its a very good representation of how it should handle. OK its only a FWD with 200 odd BHP but still. Credit to them.

The Ready To Race DLC, the custom championship tool and the new AI makes this so good. I'm a console player, but I've had a longish go on the PC version and credit to Kunos, they've worked and worked to bring the console version relatively close. The feel of it is light years ahead of Project CARS or (even moreso) something like Forza. Setting up multiclass races finally works because the AI is miles better. You set up a WEC style race in the past with LMP1 and GTE/GT3 and it worked up to a point until you came round to lap the slower cars and the AI just couldn't pass, ruined it. Now it finally works, and so what better time to add the R18 e-tron and TS040 to the game?

For me Project CARS just plays at doing the PC simulator thing on a console. It's still just a game. It feels like a game, it has this slightly one-dimensional, steering an indestructible box round a runway kinda thing going on. Hopefully PC2 is better. It looks quite promising. But take a Ferrari F1 car round the Nordschleife on AC and feel genuinely thrilled and in control. I'm a big AC fan these days.

It is by far the better game

Only issues being the lack of tracks and content.

Using manufacturers to get content is poor, hardly anyone uses Porsche and Alfa downloaded content, the drift content does get used.

But we want race cars, not endless single manufacturer cars.

Id love AC to add tracks like Le Mans but I think it's really unlikely - that said, still no talk anywhere about a sequel so hopefully they'll just keep releasing content. I think they realise they've got a very good base and don't need to keep up with the likes of PCars and Forza. Their approach seems a lot less focused on moneygrabbing than SMS but maybe I'm being naive there.

You can get them on the PC version and they are pretty good mods actually.

I don't think AC will be sequelled, they are a far smaller company than WMD or the ISI guys and therefore don't have the need to make endless money continually.

Though I would imagine they must be working on something new

Just tried both of them, and... I have to say they both sound and drive quite a bit better than they do in F1 2017.

Those with a wheel, are you going full frame set up and bury yourself in a. Spare room or basement or half arising it somehow?

Mrs bought me a wheel and pedals but ****, I need to brace the wheel and then find a way for the pedals to stop shifting about. Nightmare.

For $600 I can grab a lightly used seat and frame which solves all my problems and is a steal but I can't have that in the living room!!

My wheel setup is pretty half assed atm, I use this in my living room.

I mounted the wheel on this portable work table, the legs keep the pedals in place with the way I set it up. It's by no means perfect though.

https://www.ridgid.c...le-work-support

I sit on this chair.

I don't have the room for a permanent playseat setup yet, so this works ok for me.

I'm still having trouble with fixing my pedals, can't find something heavy enough to prop them against. At least my desk is sturdy enough to cope with the wheel and gearshift being affixed to them, but I have to occasionally turn the force feedback way down to not bother anyone in the other room (G27 force feedback + my desk's material = NOISY).

I bought this sim on Steam back in 2016 but could not get my wheel to work properly due to not knowing which axes to invert/not invert. About 3 months ago, I finally got the wheel working and since then, it has been my go to sim. It is just such a privilige to be able to slide a Maserati 250F around Monza!

I will pay for games and things that are worth paying for.

This is a mod for a game that has launched tons of relatively cheap DLC over the past year or so.

Mods have for a long time now not been paid for. And that is the developers choice, so it cna beplayed by anyone and enjoyed.

It is just that becaise of DLC and micrtransactions  (look it up for recent scandals from EA and Bungie) a lot of people are jumping ont he bandwagon.

If the only way you can try it is to pay for it, then count me out sorry.

You might be willing to part with money for stuff you don't know if you will like, but that says more about you than me being cheap!!

I can't comment on the GT pack but I have both the RSS Formula Hybrid and the Formula RSS 2 (F2 car). I'd recommend them. They are top quality and I've gotten many hours of enjoyment out of both. They are the best mods (and only pay mods) I have for AC and I don't regret the tiny cost of either.

Compared to the cost of a car in say iRacing they're good value. And given how much we will have usually spent on hardware I don't begrudge spending small amounts necessary on software here and there to get the most out of the whole package.

The thing is, I just simply don't care about those AAA titles EA and the likes put out every year. Those products are 90% the same as the previous versions and they target the 'casual gamers' with their software. But these small independent groups who create something in areas I have deep interest in, I'm willing to support them even regularly, and yes, even when they release unofficial content. I mean if Kunos would employ them and the GT1 pack would be released as an official DLC, would you buy it then? The supervising 3D artist at Kunos personally recommended this mod to us and he himself helped the guys in some areas during development.

I am not saying its rubbish.

Simply that I grew into playing sims on Rfactor and every single mod released on that, good or bad was free.

Old habits die hard

And some of those were worth far more than ANYTHING released now as they had class systems, individual physics, hundreds of liveries.  THAT I would pay for, and indeed paypaled one or two so good were they.

So I got a new laptop in the last few weeks and can finally run AC on high settings. Really a gorgeous game. The F2004 just sounds so good, and I love how they've managed the acoustic modeling so the car actually sounds believable as it moves away from the camera in replays, nice echoing and such.

Unfortunately, I skimped on the processor on the laptop to get a dedicated GPU, which means I get the CPU Occupancy > 99% warning and accompanying stuttering if I'm trying to race with more than 12 or 13 AI cars. No issues/slowdowns with huge grids in online racing, so it must be the way the game manages AI. Any workarounds for this?

Yeah, AI is a huge CPU hog in Assetto Corsa. I have an I7 7700k in my main rig, and still occasionally get the CPU usage warning (albeit, only when I'm running it in VR and recording).

The only way I have found to manage the issue is to either reduce the grid size or stop other applications using your resources at the same time. If you're racing offline against the AI, kill the wifi and turn off your anti-virus while you race.

For the AC fans of F1 cars: a new F1 2018 mod car has been released just a few days ago by the best modding group for AC. It is payware, so up to you guys. I got it and it looks stunning, super detailed. It drives so well too.
It is available on Racedepartment.com and also on their own website (racesimstudio.com). Their 2017 F1 car became so popular that even Max Verstappen was spotted driving it.

I am pretty new to this game, got it last year. It seems to be much less mods being released or made this year? Could someone give me some pointers on good mods 2018?

Anyone tried the F1 season mods (payware)? I would like a F1 1991-1994 mod, a BTCC 1998-1999 mod the most.

Assetto Corsa's development finished at the end of last year, and the developers shifted their focus to the official Blancpain GT Series game called Assetto Corsa Competizione. But the community is still active, the best place to find mods and online events is probably RaceDepartment (the item ratings are usually good indicators of quality):

https://www.racedepa...ries/ac-cars.6/

https://www.racedepa...es/ac-tracks.8/

or the Assetto Corsa Club:

https://assettocorsa.club/en

I'd personally recommend RSR's Formula 3 mod, Shaun Clarke's Seat Leon TCR mod, and if you are okay with payware mods, you should try the work of RaceSim Studio, because the quality of their work is on par with stock content if not better.  :)  Another recently released payware mod is the DRM Revival, which is not that excellent in every aspect like the RSS content, but it contains some iconic monsters from the past.

The AC modding community is super-active actually, make sure you check on racedepartment.com. I agree with everything written above and I also recommend installing an app called "Content Manager", it has lots of additional features. My latest favorite cars and tracks: RSS GT1  and RSS 2018 F1 mods (payware), Watkins Glen, Feldbergring.

One new thing that was created just in the last few weeks is  working car lights for night racing. AC never had this feature but the genius behind Content Manager decided it could be done and he did it. Still in beta but already playable and really awesome:

I'd recommend the PC version if your computer is up for the task. If you buy the Ultimate Edition, you'll get all the content available (base game + all DLC's), otherwise the DLC packs are sold separately.

Its a games PC which improved the motherboard a couple of years ago, CPU is quite quick but i5 not i7, the GPU is only a GTX960 with 2GB of its own RAM. Not sure a 1060 is worthwhile either, and of those, the 3GB versions seem slower than 6GB  but 3GB versions are quite cheap. 1070 cards are double the 1060 6GB card prices.

And I guess Assetto Corsa Competizione is the version to buy rather than Assetto Corsa Ultimate edition, because Competizione is the new game?

I think the PC comes via Steam? The PS4 Assetto Corsa Ultimate is cheap to buy here, $Au40 via eBay. New so they say ...

I have a 4th generation i5 processor as well and I had a GTX960 2GB too and AC was running fine on it (well, not on maximum graphical settings but still), but last year I bought a GTX 1060 6GB, because the old GPU started to become a bottleneck in my config. But some guys in the league I race with are still using 960's, it's fine for a single monitor setup.

It depends on what you prefer. Assetto Corsa Competizione will be the official Blancpain GT game and thus it will only contain GT3 cars. A public beta version will be released through Steam Early Access in September, but the full game will become accessible only in early 2019.

Assetto Corsa is the predecessor, it is an older game, but it contains a wide range of cars from street supercars to a great selection of Ferrari Formula 1 machinery. And the old Assetto Corsa supports modding on PC and there are tons of high quality tools, car and track mods which can enhance the driving experience further. Assetto Corsa Competizione on the other hand will have zero/very limited mod support.

If there is someone regular visitor who doesn't go to paddock club but is interested in Assetto Corsa multiplayer now is the time to do the exception since there is an appropriate thread waiting.

Heads up that this is currently going cheap on Steam.
