ID help with a 1584 cc 4 cylinder motor ?

A couple of years ago I popped by the Rare Breeds show at Haynes International Motor museum

where I came across this Fibrefab Bonito on a Q plate,

wonder if anybody recognises what type of motor this might be, DVLA says its 1584 cc and the vehicle was first registered in 1986.

Relevant answers maybe credited used in a forthcoming blog.

I'm struggling to think of any 4cyl engine with the dizzy in that position. Must be getting old.

Given the epic fail of TNF's best, I had one more search under "cam covers" in Google and good old e-bay came up trumps

Doh! All the Golf engines I have seen have had the dizzy on the side of the block (not that I've seen many!).

the eBay link will be dead, we really should put that it's a VW Corrado, Golf or Jetta engine, 16-valves, 1.8 or 2.0 litres. Of course that kind of mucks up the '1584cc' part of the thread, doesn't it?

I also seem to recall that the VW Golf distributors were mounted on the end of the cam like that, not that I've looked for a lot of years. I've certainly seen other engines with that distributor location, a useful way of doing it in a transverse-engined car.

Why? Who cares about that ebay engine, all we need to know is that the pattern on the RA cover is the same as in the Fibrefab Bonito (wonderful name! ), and there was a 1584cc Golf engine, wasn't there? Case closed, well done Ralph!

For the sake of accuracy and posterity the closest VAG water cooled engine sizes I  found were 1,595 cc and 1,598 cc so as jcbc3 suggests this car may have originally been fitted with an aircooled 1584 cc motor.

If you google "fibrefab bonito 1584cc", (I've nothing better to do....) select the data index thingy and click on the 1980 specs, then scroll down to Bonito 1600, you'll see it's described as having a four cylinder VW 1584 boxer motor.  Am I alone in thinking it's not a bad looking little thing, with a hint of GT40 (!) around the front end? Having said that, the stated top speed in the foregoing bumf is high 90s, so it's no wonder the one you show has a Corrado lump in it.

It IS a GT40, just been left too long in the rain, and if you look, it is STILL wet!  Probably Matchbox sized by now ...
