The Telegraph reports today that Goodowood ''members meeting'' at the end of March will have 20 plus Turbo F1 cars present.

It seems unclear whether they will run, race or be on static display.

Static display seems attractive but the other prospects of 1000 h.p cars at Goodwood, on a cold track with amateur drivers .....

Nice to see that Chris Threlfall is remembered in the name of the FJ race

Members can invite eight guests so it shouldn't be a problem.

I was given to understand the cars are doing demonstration laps at speed.

Hold your breath as could be very interesting.

Being one of the invited ones of a friend (mind you - I paid for the ticket !) I am looking forward to that. The other races and demonstrations should also be very interesting. Gr. B cars on tarmac !

And I am hoping for a return of the atmosphere of the first Revival in 89 - you could walk around and not too much crowding !

The Revival does deserve its success, but I do prefer a more relaxed event with the focus on the track (and paddock, of course).

Might there be a TNF meeting ?

Good idea, with  crowding likely to be much less of a problem at this event than at the Revival. Hopefully, it will be more successful than my earlier attemps to hook  up with friends at Goodwood.  At the very first Revival, I had made arrangements to meet David, a friend I had made in the UK through a motorsport discussion Usenet group, for the first time. I asked him, how do I recognize you? He said, easy, look for a fifty-year-old with greying hair and beard, who wears a tweed jacket, shirt and tie, and a "flat hat". :rotfl:

If anybody needs a friend to accompany them to Members Goodwood I am happy to volunteer. I will even buy you a large drink.

My interest in the event was piqued by the presence of the Gooda Bentley, if anyone else needs a guest and the ticket price is not too far north of 50 squid   ;)

I can understand the manufacturer being piqued by the appearance of that thing, but what piqued you about it?

The first Revival was '98 Ralf. On the first Friday of that Meet I was stood at the Circuit Entrance from the Paddock watching March driving an old Bristol 400 on an
inaugural lap of the revamped circuit. I was tapped on the shoulder by a chap telling me I should be looking right, not left, at which point Ray Hanna flew about 20 feet over our heads in his Spitfire. It's still one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. JohnP

You are right, of course - my mistake. It was 98 - I still have the poster of that event framed in my house, should have looked there ! Must be the age....

Yes - the Ray Hanna thing flight was one of THE moments to remember. I have a rather blurred photo with only part of the Spitfire tail on it....

I had flown in from Los Angeles the previous day, jet-lagged to heck, & walked in through the main entrance,  was just trying to absorb the impact of the extraordinary set-dressing/ambience/re-creation (absolutely unexpected and quite unlike any previous historic meeting), when this RR Merlin howls by at zero feet towing a Mark IX Spitfire... I lost what tenuous grip I had on the material world at that moment. "As it hasn't crashed, that must be Ray Hanna" I thought...

That first Revival Meeting was the purest racing and spectating experience I ever had, took me a week back at work before I recovered to normality ...  and it was the first time in three seasons that the Alfa 2600 Sprint really went well.

An indelible memory ...

Nick

At the end of the day we were making our way across a deserted field near the circuit when the Spitfire appeared high in the sky over us. Ray flew down and did a barrel-roll over us and disappeared into the distance. It was like a scene from the Powell/Pressburger film "A Canterbury Tale". Absolutely amazing. JohnP

It may be worth pointing out that tickets are available on a per day basis, ie Saturday OR Sunday separately, rather than the full 2 days only , all or nothing. This may be useful to people for whom just one category might hold special appeal, but who might not want to stump up for the whole weekend. Grandstand seats are also available, on a roving basis rather than per individual seat, again on a daily basis also.
A single day ticket might also serve to alleviate the accommodation issues.

I was just talking to someone who's been asked to locate turbo cars for this event.

We came up with around 9 cars that might run - plus the 4 running cars in Australia (and maybe a couple in the USA) but given the low budget/pay to participate nature of the event it seems unlikely that they will go to the expense of participating.

There is a similar number of static cars, plus any that they can persuade the manufacturers to bring from their collections.

If someone wants to take part in the demonstration there are a few cars up for sale that could be sorted in time if bought soon enough!

Reading some of the memories of the first Revival Meeting takes me back to my first visit in 2001.Obviously, the event had grown in the intervening 3 years, but it was still intimate enough to be relaxing.  By contrast, the 2011 event (my last to date) was very different, especially having not been for a few years.  Too crowded and impersonal to have the same atmosphere.

We're nearly there with 98T 04, just going back together so all being well we hope to be there.

Thank you for all the wonderful pictures you are providing here and in the technical forum, Patrick, I could look at them for hours so fascinating they are.

This was still the first generation of composite chassis, no double curvatures, just basic folding of the honeycomb panels. Is the engine bulkhead all in aluminium?

I must say I wasn't a fan of the look of those cars because the narrow and long tanks made the driver sitting too far ahead with respect the rest of the car, as well as the heavy refrigeration required made look the cars too fat.

The 98T is a moulded tub rather than the fold up type that came before. All the bulkheads are aluminium and are shimmed to the chassis which makes it extremely labour intensive to put together. To make matters worse some of the faces are angled such that if the bulkhead moves then the gap opes or closes so you have to have it held in place very firmly during the shimming process. All the bulkheads are all held with with M4 bolts that are hand cut to size such that the unthreaded shank is used as a pin and the nut just holds the pin in place....

I do agree the tank pushes the driver forward although as time has gone by I have become more fond of the shape. Although I had owned this car for a while I really fell in love with it when we ran it on a humid morning in Barcelona a few years back. To see it coming down the straight at 180mph with vortices pouring off the rear wing endplates, sparks flying and the flames licking on downshifts was a really special thing. I remember thinking that despite it being a bitch to work on and all the agro of restoring it the whole effort was worth it to watch it for those few laps on that morning. Quite magical.

Glad you like the photos, it's great to have somewhere to share them.

Interestingly we did the repairs on the two little shrouds that cover the front upper wishbone pivots during the week. When you get the paint off you can see that they are made entirely of off cuts of carbon fibre. I guess that tells you what an expensive commodity it was back in the '80's!

I saw the last aluminium Lotus chassis striped down a few years ago - I guess that would be a type 80. It blew me away. Very very complex to make and stunningly produced.

Hi All,

Good to hear that you are enthused by the idea of seeing 1000bhp Turbo F1 cars at Goodwood Motor Circuit – it should be some sight, and sound!

As it stands, we are expecting to see well north of 20 cars within the paddock, and at least 15 running on-track. We hope to have models from Alfa Romeo, Arrows, Beatrice, Benetton, Ferrari, Lotus, McLaren, RAM, Renault, Toleman, Williams, Zakspeed, and possibly a few more. You may well even witness the largest collection of Tolemans ever amassed – from TG181 to 185! Expect some famous faces in the cars too.

We believe it to the largest gathering of Turbocharged F1 cars since 1986.

Let us know if you have any questions on other elements of the content, whether racing, or demonstration.
