I had One memorable battle with Martin at Cadwell which sticks in my mind, here was a guy with probably 10 -15mph less than the TZ's around him, and also I think he had a couple of fingers missing on his brake hand, but he rode the wheels off it and settling for second was never An option, he'd try and get around you, under you, or even through you if it came down to it.
A really nice guy who I hope is still around somewhere.

I see Martin Whiteley listed there, now he was one hard man on that old Norton!!

On my first visit to Flookburgh,I remember being impressed by his riding.I think he had something like 4 second places. Not bad for a Norton against a load of TZ's.The only person who beat him on the day was Barry Hall, who I think won about six races altogether.

I've 2 big boxes full of programmes myself.I've kept them from every meeting I've been to since I started watching. From my first ever time(and only time I've ever been there) at Brands Hatch 1968,right through to the present. The wife says I'm a very sad person.

Between us we should be able to post up some real memorabilia on here, I have a large pile of MCN's from the same era in one of the boxes too.

Bit further South, looks like the cover photo predates the event by a few years, anyone recognise any of of those guys?
The hand scrawled 45m at the top would have been me keeping a record of my crank mileage
Last one for tonight, I need to stop digging and do some work!!

Great photo from Sisters,Paul..I've no idea who's on the programme cover from Snetterton though.£150 prize money seems quite good for those days I think I was earning about £90 a week.

32 looks very like Dave Clarkson from Newcastle, 18 could be Brian Peters and the rider on the far left looks like Derek Huxley.

Yes I thought it seemed quite generous for 1980 Eric, I think it was probably funded by Bulmers.

Yes I think you are right Greg on Brian Peters, I also suspect it is a Croft photo.

When I looked at the photo, the first name that sprang to mind was Brian Peters. The thing that threw me was the leathers.I only remember the red and yellow ones.A class act round Aintree in the mid seventies up until about 1981.Whatever happened to him after that?He just seemed to disappear off the scene.

The only National meeting at Aintree in about the last 50 years. No prizes for guessing the rider on the cover.

This shot looks very like Croft chicane, I remember those chevron boards covering sections of railway sleeper.

Yes it looks like it Greg, a very unforgiving barrier!!
I'm wondering if the guy leading is Colin Pole? I remember him as being blindingly fast on proddie bikes.
He was a quiet bespectacled little fella who you would expect to see sitting behind a post office counter, very unassuming, he didn't look like a rider at all.............................but out on track as hard as nails and very very quick!!

This is one from the first 1980 meeting at 3 Sisters.I think there had been only one previous meeting in 1979,when the track was first used for bikes. It was used instead of Longridge which closed in 1978.I presume that's you at No.58,Greg

Could be, but I don't remember Robs bikes being covered in Shellsport stars...I do remember Rob having a bad one at Cadwell on his 750 when he wheelied out of Barn and the front wheel collapsed when it came down.
Lots of familiar names on there, Geoff Crust later of Yamaha GP team, the late Andy McGladdery, Mark Edge, Phil Hitch, my mate Trevor Cooper, the Corner brothers, the Loriman brothers..all the regular Croft riders.
Oh. and Dave Woolams who still races at Olivers Mount to this day

I thought it might be him too Paul!
"The Flying Coalman" if I recall correctly? I remember him winning the 350 race at a Cadwell international in 1980 or therabouts (on a black TZ) beating all the stars of the day in the process! I think he took everyone by surprise with that one (to be honest, I hadn't even heard of him until that day!).

At one point Rob held the outright lap record at Croft 1m 11.7 together with Mick Noblett and ..I'm not 100% about this , Adrian Marsh. Robs 350 was special, he had allsorts of kit on it, Lectron carbs, plasma discs etc. I've posted a few shots of Rob on earlier threads.

Where was that taken ?? He took the record at Croft on an ex. works 750 Suzuki triple, the same as George Fogarty used to ride.
