James Boothby and JBM cars (merged)

In the late 1940’s James Boothby started to build his own cars known as J.B.M. They were basically war surplus V8 engines on pre-war chassis. One was owned by a chap called Ripper whose family had a saw mill in Sible Hedingham in Essex, it is said that he raced this at Boreham. In 1951; J. Burling of the West Essex Car Club raced a J.B.M at Fersfield, as Boothby only made at most 22 cars; it is likely that the two mentioned are in fact the same car. Can anyone add to this??

james boothby advertised a J-B Ford V8 special competition roadster 650 pounds from an adrress in Horley noting he was ready to accept orders for them.
He raced it in sept 47 although listed as JMB 3622cc by 1948 it was now 3917cc.

I know the license plate on the car was OPC 746

Apparently made from reconditioned parts to avoid purchase tax being imposed, per Georgano.

I am looking for any information about a JBM that I am about to embark upon restoring.

Anyone know anything about JBM?

 

Apparently there is an article in the June 2007 edition of The Automobile magazine that I have on order but if anyone has any information or knowledge of JBM would be a great help.

James Boothby's son Fred races an MG with the VSCC you should be able to find his contact details through them.

Peter, if he is the same Fred, he raced a 20 in FJ so Duncan Rabagliati may be able to help via HFJAssozc. He knows everybody....

What is the motor in the car? The Grey mentioned in the Motor Sport article is said to use three or six carburetters.

Roger, it is the same Fred who used to race a Lotus 20 (and MGB), won in my Brabham twin-cam once, knows everybody, used to be a military policeman - I should have his contact details but don't know where they are!

 

Duncan Rabagliatti will probably have information about JBMs as well as contact details.

[OPC746] was owned at one point mid 1950's by someone who later was to own an XK150 "S" coupe but in not much later years  created a word that would be known around the world right through to the current day!
