I am on firefox 49.01, cleared all history, cookies so this one works now. Still have some threads which crash the browser. But only in firefox, so something on my machine it seems.

This should be working properly again - the other problems (including any sort of browser crashing) sound like they're totally unrelated and something that we need to investigate separately...

I got it back yesterday, after cleansing my caches (sounds like some sort of modish health fad).  But today it was gone again until I did my cleansing again.  I hope it isn't going to be necessary everytime I log in!

I had this issue 1-2 weeks ago as well on one thread on my mobile phone. But the issue went away.

Hmmmm.... so I should glare at Grayson? It is 3 different threads, rest of them works fine. On Firefox which is different from a Mobile browser, if there are suggestions to something I need to install please throw after me.

I think we're simply clicking it too much. We keep breaking it.

Hooplaaa! Here we go again.

So we do.

As this is such a regular occurrance it should be easy for the software writers to track the cause down. Which reminds me to ask what happened to the helpful  theopape of a few years ago?

I don't see any useful purpose in this feature personally. Then again I am not postings in a gazillion threads.

That's agreed so far as "View New Content" goes, but the basic search is, or should be, a useful tool for most of us.

Particularly useful when mining the archives of this forum, but also helpful with long threads.

Forum search function handles that, the dot next to the thread tells me there have been new entries. I suppose it's what we have gotten used to?

The forum search facility is part of the same functionality as the 'new content' feature and is broken. For the people who post about historical research, or people who want to check there's not already a thread open before starting a new one, this is an issue.

It's still a mystery why this keeps breaking in this very specific way - it's to do with the custom build we've got for the forums.

We had thought that the solution we put in place in October was a permenant fix, but that's obviously not the case.

We will investigate a proper fix (rather than just patching it up every time as we're about to do now) in the New Year...

We think we've worked out what the problem is and fixed it properly - it's related to the way that part of the database rebuilds itself on Thursday mornings.

If this happens again on a Thursday morning, our latest fix hasn't worked. If it happens again any other time, we were probably wrong about what's causing it...

Ahhhh...... Phoenix!!1 Burn and resurrect from the ashes. It is supposed to happen every 1400 years, thus your partial database must exist in a parallel universe where time pass faster than here.

Suddenly, the black dots and open dots which indicate whether a thread has new posts in it are gone. :well:

I find I can see them using Autosport red theme but not Atlas orange. Do a switch to check whether it's the same for you.

Any issues around the Atlas theme are hopefully fixed now - let me know if you're still having the same problem!

Everything is good for me now, I am intrigued that a change in color scheme were a workaround.

I can get New Content until I sign in and then it disappears and says No New Content Found.  Same on either theme incidentally.

The asterisks also disappeared but I found that my settings had changed themselves. Now I have corrected them, that is OK now.

I use Chrome.

Still not able to get New Content.  It is there when I first open the site but as soon as I log in, it vanishes.  Must be something I did in a former life.

Just checked the admin panel and there's nothing about your profile which might differentiate you from anyone else. You ought to be getting the usual stars. Are you able to try a different browser?

The stars are fine (although there was a glitch due to a change in my settings that simply happened on its own).  It is the View New Content function that won't work for me.  When I open the site, I can select View New Content and get it.  But as soon as I log in as BRG, that disappears and it says No New Content Found.  I have cleansed my caches, tried the different themes to no avail.

Maybe I will try Firefox although I have been using Chrome quite happily for years.

Try it now. I went in and switched a couple of things off, saved your profile and then turned them back on and saved it again. It looks fine from this end.

Colour me puzzled. I just tried logging in on Firefox and the problem was still persisting, but now I have tried Chrome again, and it is OK.  Thanks for whatever it was that you did!

But why it behaves one way on one browser and a different way on another is presumably something only Silicon Valley types can understand.

All I did was switch off the star notifications, save the profile and then switch the notifications on again, saving the profile once more. If you get the same problem again, try that!

Having said that, I did go in by a different route to the one you would use (via the admins' dashboard) so that might have cleared some sort of glitch which was causing it. The error might persist in Firefox until you clear cache and/or cookies - it tends to be a bit less forgiving of errors than Chrome.
