And can we still crowdsource kudos for Ross to get a race seat if it's in the same series as him?

I've been asking exactly that question.

I see that there's no comments on "Racecar Engineering", which is (was) a Haymarket publication.  I follow F1 for the technology even more than the racing itself, so this was the only magazine I read on a subscription basis.  However, I'd noted (subjectively) a significant drop off in content quality from when I was reading in the late 90's to early aughts, although the gloss level is higher.  I hope the technical side isn't ignored or dropped, and the Autosport brand is strengthened by the new owners.  Even though I'm American, I do think that the Brits are a more "natural" steward for auto racing, as my countrymen seem to reduce everything to dollars just as soon as they can.

And my thanks to all the contributors and staff/hosts of this forum, by far the one I haunt the most.  I hope it continues and grows.

Racecar Engineering hasn't been part of Haymarket for at least 10 years, if it ever was.

The Guardian story does mention Pistonheads as a significant (if slightly unexpected) revenue generator. No word, as far as I can see, on whether Haymarket's held onto that.

Pistonheads is staying with Haymarket.

They're keeping everything other than Autosport (including the Awards in December and the show in Birmingham in January), F1 Racing, Motorsport News and LAT (the photo agency and archive).

What happens with the forum and/or forum moderation?

Nothing is changing. We keep our distance from the day to day forum moderation so that the forum admins and moderators can act autonomously - I would expect that to carry on as it is.

Racecar Engineering hasn't been part of Haymarket for at least 10 years, if it ever was.

You're right, and I'm pretty sure that it's never been a part of Haymarket. We work with them on the engineering section of Autosport International, so that's probably caused some confusion in the past...

Oops!  My apologies, I confused Haymarket with Chelsea Magazine Company.  My error, fortunately I had a renewal slip in the recycling that I could dig out for confirmation - sorry I didn't do it at the time of writing.  :(

Makes sense since all the former Autosport staff moved to Motorsport recently

Of course it probably has a lot to do with the F1 take over, since motorsport is owned by Liberty...

Where do you get that info please?  Do you know any of said staff?  Liberty don't own Motorsport.com do they???

So what could happen to Autosport? Is this the beginning of the end?

I recently paid for another year subscription of Autosport Plus, I hope that wasn't a waste of money.

I would dearly like to know that too as a paid up subscriber!

With a bit of luck they'll remove the paywalls. I always felt the paywalls with what felt like ever reducing views per month was a sign of desperation. A lot of Autosport's staff has been slowly migrating over to Motorsport.com. I'd love to see the "Autosport Plus" editorial quality without any paywalls.

Where do you get that info please?  Do you know any of said staff?  I know of no free site that's any good really.  Newspapers are all rubbish because they have no staff writers but just freelancers.  I think if you want quality you have to pay for it.  I want free F1 on TV, but specialist reporting I fully expect to have to pay for.

Can only see this as a good thing. I'd already shifted my news-reading activity to motorsport.com, due to a perceptible drop in quality of Autosport articles, and the really short-sighted "page view" limitations imposed on autosport.com in an attempt to drive up subscriptions.

I just checked out Motosport.com and found the articles very short and superficial.  I find Autosport.com to be of the highest quality of any motorsports site I have been to.

To answer the main question being asked in this thread (and the other threads on the same subject) and to put a few minds at rest...

Zak Brown (Motorsport Network's chairman) has stated that "All that is best about Autosport and its sister businesses will be preserved" and has promised more investment in our brands than we would have been able to get at Haymarket.

Hopefully, this means that the improvements to the site which we've been promising (front page customisation, better driver and team pages, a working search function which doesn't bounce you back to our classic site, etc) will come a bit sooner as a result of these changes. You won't see any drastic changes in the short term - as you can see from our coverage of the buildup to this weekend's racing, it's very much business as usual.

As for the Forums - I certainly think that they fall under "all that is best" about the site and see no reason why our new owners should have a different view of this!

Thank you.  No offence to Motorsport.com, but I find it rather superficial compared to Autosport (especially as a subscriber).  I can understand why, because they are completely free - no free service can be expected to be that in-depth.  So I'm happy if you keep on as you are albeit with some more resources to keep the site working well.

Bad news. But at least the announcement was fortuitous timing as my Autosport+ subscription was due to auto-renew at the end of the month to the tune of $78. I will cancel the renewal and see what comes of this consolidation.

It is what it is, if you want a quality service then you must pay like anything else in this world, because at the end of the day Autosport is a business, not a charity. They need to make money somehow and I enjoy the content they give me, in my eyes It's no different than paying for F1 on TV or subscribing to a magazine.

This is big ! I only see good things out of this. The way Motorsport Network has increase their presence worldwide can translate into a better Autosport presence worldwide too. This means getting news from local reporters for each of the circuits, more insight information etc.

to me this is like Coca Cola acquiring Pepsi . Motorsport and Autosport have been rivals for a while and I think they will still be kept as two different brands. I can only see a lot of synergies. If manage well I can see them using what has worked in each of the websites and using them for the improvement of both websites.

Also is Motorsport magazine separate from this?

It's quite some time (circa 2005?) since Motor Sport magazine was part of the Haymarket empire. It is privately owned by Edward Atkin

The Guardian has the best news website by a country mile and is losing money hand-over-fist - because it is gratis.

Whereas Private Eye is making six figure profits on a tiny circulation - because it doesn't give out mass content for free.

Wasn't aware of the former (not good).  Very aware of the latter.

To clear up some of the confusion

Motorsport Network or Motorsport.com who have taken over Autosport etc are not the same organisation as the British magazine Motor Sport, Motorsportmagazine.com,  (the green 'un) which is often erroneously called MotorSport because of the typeface used for their title.  Motor Sport was hived off by Haymarket a while back so is not part of the takeover.

Similarly Motor Sport Forums, motorsportforums.com, has no connection with Motorsport.com.  They successfully fought off an attempt by Motorsport, com to take their website over.

"All that is best ... will be preserved."

This kind of corporate speak is invariably an ominous sign of clearcutting on the horizon. :well:

Don't see any reason either.

That doesn't necessarily mean that they don't.

Could you please get these new owners to offer some assurances in black and white that all of the forums will remain in place (archives included)?

Thanks in advance for asking.

Quite possible that I've not noticed it before, but I just noticed that when I opened the Forum home page, I received this message:

We notice you may be using an ad-blocker. Did you know that we remove ads for AUTOSPORT+ members to offer an ad-free experience? Find out more about AUTOSPORT+

This seems to me to be a clear hint that if they don't get enough subscriptions then they may rethink the service that they are providing for free (as those free-loaders are using ad blockers). Of course, that's quite reasonable for a service that's supposed to help generate revenue for the company. Just saying.

And being an Autosport+ subscriber didn't seem to stop the adverts on the forum anyway, at least for me, so I left my ad-blocker enabled. Maybe my forum account and Autosport+ login weren't linked properly - I didn't bother looking into it as the blocker did it's job and I didn't seem to be missing any functionality.

EDIT it may have been because the email address I used to subscribe for the main site and the email address I used for the forums didn't match.

If a subscriber and see add's then go to classic home and access forum from there, then adds are gone until the sphinx tilts again. 3 - 7 times since the upgrade for me.

Wonder what will happen with FORIX - Since Motorsport Network have their own site Motorsport Stats.

The current motorsport statistics site that is linked to Haymarket has results of even series of great parts of motorsport world

and not only the most important world motorsport series. Even regionals of Australia, Japan, South America et al.

It will be interesting FORIX could survive, because they have spent two decades to be what they are now.

I'm grateful to them...

Respect of the Forum, I remember what happened in late 2009, when a certain multi-language French motorsport website was sold to a multimedia giant.

Some of the old employees of the deceased site created a new site, and the users of the entire forum community were suggested to move to their "new" home.

Hope it won't happen this with this fantastic forum.

Some clarification on the future of this Forum, the chat room and the My Autosport service would be very welcome.

These three services are used by many and feature a community that have engaged with each other for years. Please keep that in mind.

Without a doubt the best for longstanding communities and forums is to keep it stable.  Don't change anything that made it great, but if opportunities to improve areas without compromising the foundation, then great.  MotorSport.com purchased FerrariChat.com and there haven't been any changes to the foundation, nearly 100% satisfaction so far.

Less competition always lead to better and more informed articles since they don't get distracted by fighting competitors.

motorsport.com confuse me.

They add a new article/report that stays on for long after it is relevant. An article based on a quote said by Fernando Alonso at Spa was up until early this week. There's been lots of examples like this.

So I was getting more convinced the end was nigh for motorsport.com, it looked like nobody was writing anything for them.

But that didn't sit right with keep seeing adverts for the site trackside at many races on TV recently.

Now this happens.

Curious.

I would guess that motorsport.com prefer being able to not leave articles hanging long time after they had no relevance, invested in what is arguably The internet authoritative coverage.

Lol @ the PANIC and Zmeej and Stonefeld with the gimme a guarantee !!!....

IMHO, you have a sick sense of humour.

(FWIW, that's not something that usually turns me off.)

Otherwise, neither Ross nor I are looking for guarantees because, after all, the only thing one can safely and honestly guarantee is that in 70 years 98% of the current members of the Paddock Club and Nostalgia Forum will be dead.

However, if the new powers-that-be could see fit to give us assurances that the Autosport Forums and their archives will continue to exist in their present format, or at least in one that is serviceably similar, that would be very pleasantly reassuring.

Don't see anything particularly risible in asking for such, and there has been no expression of "gimme" associated.

Though I do wonder about the future of Autosport/Motorsport. Remember when Autosport took over Atlas, and it was Atlas-Autosport for a while, and then eventually the Atlas name was quietly dropped. I can't see both Autosport and Motorsport existing in parallel for ever - it just doesn't make sense. But as Autosport is the best brand of the two, with all its history, maybe we will see both sites merging into one Autosport site.

Back to something I mentioned previously about motorsport.com, only halfway down the page (mobile version at least) they're still running part ONE of their Singapore 'Inside Grand Prix'.

It's billed as part 1 of 2. The day after Suzuka took place they still haven't changed to part 2, and it's superceded by Suzuka already. That's not really how websites have worked since the late 1990's, yet Motorsport does.

It is an awful website frankly. Surely it was only ever intended as a dipped toe, prior to snapping up Autosport.

I doubt it because they snapped up a lot of the Autosport staff which looks like an odd move if they were going to buy Autosport anyway. Now they've diluted the talent across two teams instead of one stronger team.

I'd considered it, but maybe there has been a promise to the new Msport staff they'll have free rein to get Autosport where they want it to be?

It is a known entity. I just can't see it being binned for something that I, for one, basically laugh at.

Motorsport has all these staff but it's constantly stocked with out of date stuff.

I feel/hope that our new overlords will create something similar to allow us all to make even greater fools of ourselves than before !!

So does Eurosport.

I tend to read the Autosport articles on Eurosport instead as they don't have a site that hurts my eyes or keeps popping up reading limits. Irreponsible I know.......

Yes, a Fifth Column return along with Giorgio Piola. Is this merely a single column, or is Nigel leaving Motorsport magazine, nothing there seems to suggest this.

Don't get this. Jon Noble left Autosport for Motorsport.com when that firm bought up a load of sites and people... before they bought autosport. Forgive me if it's very clear in the press release I skimmed, but where is this working together going to transpire? Are staff from both sites going to work together from across the group?

PRESS RELEASE

Motorsport Network acquires Motors TV

Creating a TV Anywhere home for performance motoring and motorsport

November 18, 2016, Miami, FL. Motorsport Network today announced the acquisition of Motors TV, consolidating the world’s largest automotive & motorsport digital technology business with a global broadcast operation.

The acquisition of the broadcaster that reaches more than 30 million homes with 130 rights agreements and 700 live events annually will become the backbone of Motorsport.tv, a performance motoring and motorsport OTT video broadcast network.

“Today’s news to expand our commitment to automotive from the global digital presence we are building with Motor1.com and our digital motorsport estate including Motorsport.com and Autosport.com into the broadcast arena is a bold step to build a genuinely integrated platform across small and large screen alike. The investment will enable us to create the very first dedicated broadcast ‘home’ in our expert areas of performance motoring and motorsport,” said Zak Brown, Motorsport.com’s Chairman.

Motors TV will be absorbed into Motorsport.tv and provide fans with new original programming formats spanning performance road car content to the live telecast of premier World Championship motorsport. The revised and expanded service will graduate to full HD status in March 2017 and aside from enriching the scope of programming and enhancing the broadcast format, fans will be able to access the home of performance motoring and motorsport via a wide array of platforms from desktop, mobile, tablet, streaming devices, gaming consoles, connected televisions to set-top devices such as Apple TV, Amazon Fire & Roku.

“We have a simple three point mission to deliver new content in better quality available everywhere at any time. This agreement cements these ambitions and Motorsport Network’s huge digital community from Motorsport.com to Autosport.com and Motor1.com will be able to access this enriched service seamlessly. Motorsport.tv will bring road car and racing fans as well as advertisers together in a home for motoring & motorsport in a fashion that has never previously existed,” said Jean-Luc Roy, Motors TV’s Founder.

Motors TV was founded in 2000 and today operates five international feeds in six languages originating in France, the UK, North & Latin America and an international feed. 2017 will mark its transition from traditional linear broadcasting to a Video on Demand (VOD) service with the launch of Motorsport.tv’s new digital platform.

The acquisition of Motors TV follows the recent purchase of Autosport and F1 Racing and is the next stage in fusing the dynamic culture of Motorsport Network with the heritage and provenance of Autosport. The addition of the broadcast capability of Motors TV will deliver a 3600 digitally-connected approach to fuse the passion points of cars, bikes and racing with a global legion of fans.
