The Unofficial 2017 Livery Competition

JV538ig.jpg
Liveries in Formula One are conservative. Most of them are plain boring.
But why complain if we can do better? That's why we have the annual unofficial Autosport livery competition!
Before we get started on this year's instalment, let's take a look at some of the previous winners.

2016

It's hard to imagine this competition started even later than this one! But it proved to be one of the more exciting, not least thanks to the participation of a highly controversial design. There were also rumours of massive voter fraud that relegated said design to second place, in which it nevertheless edged out another design on account of getting more electoral first place votes.

The winner of the competition was Nonesuch, followed by Disgrace, and DaiMon.

The competition thread can be found here and the voting thread here.

2015

The competition started remarkably early this year, in fact it started in December 2014!

The winner of the competition was Denaris, followed by Sheepmachine and Anja.

The competition thread can be found here and the voting thread here.

2014

This year saw some of the most creative designs to date!

The winner of the competition was TrollHunter, followed by rooksby and ReDeYe.

An image of the third placed design was unfortunately not available. If you have one, please send me a Private Message.

The competition thread can be found here and the voting thread here.

2013

The competition was mired in controversy right up to the moment of voting! It is said by some that the results are still provisional, but until further notice the results stand.

The winner of the competition was Jeeves, followed by Risil (with two separate entries) and danmills in fourth.

An image of the first placed design was unfortunately not available. If you have one, please send me a Private Message.

The competition thread can be found here and the voting thread here.

2012

Unfortunately not many designs of this year's instalment have stuck around in this fast-changing online world.

The competition thread can be found here.

The Template

The template used will be an adapted version of the template created by BWT (Camille), which has proven an excellent canvas on which to paint.

The adaptation to the 2017 regulations was made by TheRacingElf. Thanks to Graveltrappen for alerting me to this.

6GyocBH.jpg

The template is available in two versions, all with the same bad tyres: JPG / PNG

You can use at least one of these two versions in pretty much every graphics editor.
Please consult your favourite search-engine of choice for help on how to use these programs.

The Rules

The rules for the competition are simple:
  • The Autosport Forum moderators have final say over what is and is not allowed.
  • Do not copy existing designs - instead adapt them to a new concept.
  • Do not change the template. An exception can be made for the colour of the rims and the colour of the Pirelli markings.
  • Limit the use of elaborate lighting and shading effects. Let's keep the bar to entry low.
The winner of the competition gets a few congratulations, the honour of calling him- or herself the winner, and the job of hosting the 2018 competition!

The Schedule

The competition starts today, on 1 February 2017.
You can submit your entries until 12 March 2017.
Voting will then commence and end on 24 March 2017.

The winner will be announced shortly thereafter, in the weekend of the first Formula One Grand Prix of the year!

Now then: let's see those designs!

Thank you for alerting me to this adapted template. This version by TheRacingElf, of the template by BWT (Camille) has been added to the opening post.

There is some speculation about the return of shark fins, but so far most drawings have shied away from including them in their previews. Based on what the real cars look like at the end of this month that could be an interesting thing to explore for an all new 2018 template.

For this year TheRacingElf's adaptation looks like an excellent combination of a proven template and a look at what 2017 promises.

Let's get creative!

Looking forward to this. Just a shame that artists block seems to have stopped by for a visit with me. Gahh.

I'll try and come up with something though.

Just looked through some of the previous years as posted in the OP, there are some really crazy designs out there, shame so many are no longer visible. I'll look forward to seeing what people come up with.

Same here. By now this competition is a regular part of my off-season experience and here I am with no ideas whatsoever.

Feels nice to be included in the "hall of fame"!

That's certainly a very colourful way to start the competition!

Good to see the new template in action so soon!

Shame that some of the frequent posters from the early threads included above appear to have moved on? I'm hoping someone with the skills can create a P45 livery for Bernie!!!

Still laughing awkwardly at Coolbeans sh*tholes of the world entry!

I wonder if the anticipation of the McLaren livery will lead to many orange liveries. Also I'll have an orange one, though not really because of McLaren.

Excellent, great to see two entries on the first day!

On Windows, there's almost no end to the choices.

A couple of popular programs include Paint.net / GIMP / PaintShop Pro / Adobe Photoshop.

The competition also has a proud tradition of entries made in Microsoft's own Paint.

I'm afraid that once you've participated in the livery contest threads the only way is down...

Just to offer some 'alternative facts': look at how we've already seen the creators of acclaimed designs of years past visit the thread!

Despite their lavish spending during the first series, The Grand Tour has some budget left to get rid of and decides to enter an F1 event. And look what unforeseeably hilarious stuff the boys have come up with!

After a mad English millionaire purchases MG from the Chinese, and everything is right with the world once again, he enters F1. Quite rightly, lots of modern companies drop their modern logos and adopt fifty year old versions just to join him. Sadly, Champion spark plugs were no match for HCCI, and Shell just couldn't get to grips with something called 'Four-Star', so the campaign was marred with non-starts and failures- just like a real MG.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some political themes this year as well. It is after all campaign season in quite a few European countries.

On the other hand, most races around here are not as theatrical as that of the United States.

Yes it is. But I can't see that being a big issue, it was after all the template I first used in the opening post. My bad!

Think he's asking if the purple effort is ex-poster DampMongoose, it's probably PurpleHairedDolphin truth be known. Sometimes jp can be a little Frans-esque, ie unfathomable. ;)

Ah OK. The comment looked a bit random to me and I couldn't see a connection particularly to the Russian aeroplane livery. I wondered if it was posted here accidentally.

aye carumba.
That's like the most insulting thing you could say to me.
Anyway....
I was indeed a reference to Damp Mongoose and his CiltBang entry a few years ago. The Russian livery contest was a throwback to Ross Stonefeld's suggestion that we should have a look at what these school kids could come up with.

It's all about the history of this great competition.

Thanks for the clarification, I looked through the previous threads listed in the OP but I cannot see any of his entries. Lots of posts but no pics. It appears to be a popular thread judging by the speed of people posting and showing their entries. I shall try and participate and given the sentiments shown it will be in MS paint.
