3rd Michael R. Argetsinger Symposium

The 3rd Michael R. Argetsinger Symposium for International Motor Racing History will be held on Friday, 10 November, and Saturday, 11 November 2018 at Watkins Glen International on Friday and the International Motor Racing Research Center on Saturday.

The symposium this year considers the notion of The Cultural Turn Meets the First Turn, something which we will continue to explore in future years.

Friday will start with a discussion of The Havana Motor Club, a documentary by Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt that we intend to show as part of the symposium. We will then have a series of activities at WGI such as a parade lap of the course and a tour of the facilities. We will also be providing bus tours of the original 1948-1952 course hosted by Bill Green, the IMRRC historian.

Then, beginning at 3pm at WGI we will have two presentations: Dr. Mark Howell on the recent attempts to revitalize NASCAR's top touring series & Dr. Dan Simone on the 1963 Riverside 500.

Saturday will begin with presentation at the IMRRC at 10am by Dr. Skip McGoun on Bentley racing and Dr. Paul Baxa on the Mille Miglia as "A Moving Museum". At 1pm Trevor Lister of New Zealand will discuss Maserati serial numbers as a cultural confusion.

At 2pm, Dr. Elsa Nystrom will deliver the keynote address discussion woman racer Joan Newton Cuneo, the subject of her monograph, Mad for Speed: The Racing Life of Joan Newton Cuneo. This will be followed by presentations by Francis Clax on Anne Cecile Rose-Itier and Dr. Jeremy Kinney (The Smithsonian) on women sports car racers during the 50s & 60s. We will also conduct a panel moderated by symposium co-chair Dr. Pat Yongue and Dr. Nystrom on Women in Racing.

We think that this is a good line up of topics and speakers.

My best wishes for an informative experience for all attendees. I'm envious of those at the session on Bentley marketing -- as someone who wishes to understand the marque and it significance.

I'm delighted, Don, that the symposium has half of one day for women in motorsport. After all, Mrs Bertha Benz was the first person to demonstrate that a car could be driven for any distance.
