Gasly set to replace Kvyat in Malaysian GP

Pierre Gasly is poised to make his Formula 1 debut for Toro Rosso as soon as this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix, with multiple sources suggesting that the Italian team has decided to rest Daniil Kvyat.

Although there has been no official confirmation from the Faenza-based team, it is understood that Red Bull chiefs have made the decision to give Gasly an early try-out in a race seat to work out if he should get a full-time contract for 2018.

There had been an initial idea weeks ago to get him to step up in Sepang as replacement for Carlos Sainz, if the Spaniard had been able to complete an early switch to Renault.

Gasly, Giovinazzi & Leclerc deserves to be in F1

Good news if true, but I feel sorry for Daniil

He had the talent, not the head.

Gasly-Matsushita for next season for sure, given the Honda connection

Interesting. Rough on Kvyat, but he was asking for it this season.

I still think Kvyat will have a seat in the Toro Rosso next year. But they need to give Gasly a taste and they can't exactly drop Sainz at this point considering he's the one scoring their points.

Pierre Gasly, the man who Red Bull have avoided giving Kvyat's seat to for the past 16 months? Best of luck to him. 6 races are probably enough to show us what he's got...

Best of luck to Daniil Kvyat, too (erm, I assume he won't be back again). Along with Kimi, the most disappointing big-team hire in recent years. But he did stand on a Grand Prix podium.

Yup, my thoughts exactly.

Kvyat will be in Toro Rosso next season along with gasly.

Kvyat is talented but his mental strength has been turned to mush by the Red Bull program.

Promoted too early to Red Bull Racing to replace Vettel, ditched early on in his second season and demoted back to Toro Rosso. Now dropped from Toro Rosso with 6 races to go... (if he is being dropped for the remainder)

I mean he may not be a Verstappen or a Sainz, but you have to admit that's some brutal stuff to deal with.

Having said that you need the head to be in F1 and the results, he was lucky he got a Toro Rosso drive again for this long and hasn't made the most of it.

But how will they push Matsushita through the new super licence points system? If they would let him drive just because of the pressure from Honda, it would make the whole concept look pointless.

Even with the new superlicence points distribution, that's very unlikely. Matsushita would need to finish 3rd in F2 this season, he's currently 6th, 37 points behind Markelov in third, with two race weekends to go. That would mean catching up 19 points per weekend while not allowing Ghiotto or Latifi to finish ahead of him. That is just not going to happen, Matsushita will not be eligible for a super licence.

I'd expect Kvyat still in the second STR in 2018. Or maaaaaybe there is an agreement with Ferrari who already have difficulties finding seats for their junior drivers.

Making the superlicence system look pointless would be a great service to us all.

I wonder if Sato qualifies, though...

Why? I don't want to see another Chiltons in the F1 field, thank you  :D

Predictable. Having Marko around doesn't work  well for drivers like Kvyat. Sad thing is that there probably won't be a seat for him elsewhere.

Surprised they'd think about resting Kvyat and not Sainz.

Kvyat has to be staying on next season right? Toro Rosso don't want to have two rookies next season with a new engine to develop as well.

He does. As he held a super licence previously, he isn't dependent on the points system and can be issued a super licence if "judged by the FIA to have recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability in single-seater formula cars". Which shouldn't be an issue with a carefully selected SATOOO highlight reel.

If Toro Rosso rest Sainz they also take a rest from scoring points.

They may be getting a cash injection from Honda next season but they'd be mad to just give up on the battle they're currently having in the WCC, it's worth millions.

This means also that Palmer is going to finish the season at Renault.

But excited to see, what Gasly can do. Can't be worse than Kvyat I guess!

Part of me thinks Red Bull treated Kvyat appallingly and he never stood a hope of recovery when they demoted him down to Toro Rosso. He wasn't at all bad in the Red Bull, was he? He maybe lacked Ricciardo's underlying pace to the tune of a few tenths all season, but he scored a lot of points which is ironic as that's exactly what he hasn't been doing ever since!

The other part thinks that he's lucky to have lasted this long. That he's been in a perma-sulk since it happened, has been performing woefully for eighteen months and massively deserves the boot.

dunno. I won't really miss him but feel sorry for him too.

I thought he was on borrowed time since that crash in Silverstone.

The DNF in Singapore with CS finishing 4th and CS not getting the Renault seat probably was a perfect chain of events that led to this. I am sure Dany can find a seat in FE.

As for Gasly , probably the toughest seat in F1 outside the top 3 teams. He has to prove himself against an ultra-motivated Sainz coming off his career best result.

Don't really get it, they do this to prepare Gasly for next year but why would you compromise your other driver for next year, Kvyat, when Sainz is leaving anyway? Only because Sainz should be able to score some more points? Red Bull never really cared about where Toro Rosso finished in the constructors', so why would they now?

Don't think so, Sainz has alot more experience so it wouldn't be fair to compare them, besides, Sainz is gone next season. He just has to do better than Kvyat, which equals not making a mess of it.

It's all part of the system at Red Bull though. The best survive and the weak leave.

If Red Bull had persisted with Buemi, Alguersuari and Vergne, F1 could have missed Ricciardo, Verstappen and Sainz today.

Why not? They get to compare him to the better of the two drivers and won't lose out on points whilst doing it.

Well he didn't really catch a break, he just refused to take money in exchange for ending his contract with Renault. He needs to make the most of the last six races if he's going to salvage anything of his F1 career.

well that, and if I remember correctly sainz(i might be wrong) is still part of the red bull family. So they might still "need him" in 2019, so why piss him off this season and leave him without a drive?.

Which is why it surely implies that Kyvat ain't going to be in TR next year doesn't it.

You don't 'rest' what will be your senior driver for next year. It makes no sense whatsoever.

This probably means that Gasly will miss out on the Super Formula title. He is 2nd and half a point adrift of the leader.

No, he is expected to compete in the Super Formula finale, missing the US Grand Prix at Austin.

Kvyat hasn't show anything special in this season and last year. It's a shame. I always considered him as a fast driver, but something went wrong. Probably something to do with pressure.

I concur.

I also agree that Kvyat's been hard done by Red Bull, at least in terms of their approach to it from a people-management point of view, but he's gotten more than a second chance and not delivered. (Although I think aside from incident-prone, he's been unlucky too.)

From a similar 'what's good for a driver's health pov', you gotta wonder if they're really gonna re-instate him. This will surely be nothing more than another blow, won't it? Although it is at least one way to keep him from a race ban until he loses some penalty points in Austin...

The thing with Gasly is... If they were 100% sure of him, they'd have put him in for 2017 from the get-go. Or they could've done it during the summer break or at any time before or after.

To evaluate him now (if this rumour is true) like they are doing, by giving him actual races to do instead of just FP-outings, that to me just says that there's still doubt there. A weird double-sided argument, I know, but it just strikes me as odd that even a GP2 title, SF race wins and some FPs wouldn't be enough and that they're actually saying: we want to SEE you race in F1 first...

A final note on Kvyat: they need to work with that guy over the winter if they really are retaining him, 'cause if they don't realize this is just another thing that dents his confidence, they're kidding themselves.

Should he lose his seat, I'd like to see him get a real break from the RB program and maybe have a go at Force India or a team like that from 2019. He's got the speed, is young, yet experienced, I think here's a solid racing driver to be saved there.

I'm not even sure it means he's definitely coming back for some of the other races this season. From the article:

There are suggestions that [Gasly] will do both the Malaysian and Japanese Grands Prix, but will be unable to race in Austin because it clashes with the finale of the Japanese Super Formula championship.

"At the moment I plan to do Suzuka," Gasly said over the weekend. "We will work with the team. And we will get ready for Suzuka. And i will try to do our best there. Because I’m in good position to fight for the championship. That’s the main target."

Kvyat would then likely be slotted back in for that race, but it is unclear what Red Bull would plan to do for the final events of the season.

On the other hand it will be hard for a rookie to jump in and impress right away to convince  everyone he is the real deal. To treat this as acclimatization makes IMO more sense.

If you don't have the potential to drive for the main Red Bull team..then you'll be sacked from Toro Rosso..you know the Red Bull's junior team.

Its complicated with DK - he clearly has a lot of talent .... but he has had a big part in his downfall.

Still, he is easily the most mistreated driver in F1 in recent times.

I hope he is retained for next year - Marko still owes him as far as I am concerned.

Would Toro Rosso be willing to take on Leclerc for the second car, in example for a simple placement fee?  :stoned:
