Hi folks,

I am aware that this question may not entirely belong here, but I thought it would be worth asking anyway, considering the non-zero probability that somebody may know the answer or at least have some info. ;)

So, jumping straight in: What are your experiences and/or opinions on McLaren Group companies - mostly Applied Technologies, but also Automotive and Racing - when it comes to employment? Do you recommend or not quite?

I'm interested to hear about the actual projects (and whether they were really exciting beyond having McLaren tag on them), working culture and conditions as well as general health of the organization, from your p.o.v (or p.o.v of somebody known to you). As far as my mini-research goes, I've heard and read rather mixed opinions, hence taking a chance here too.

Best,

GodHimself

Probably a bit easier for God to get a job at McLaren now that Ron Dennis is no longer there...

Not worth anything of value to your post, but I did get invited down to a final 4 interview at Woking for a 9-month internship for Applied Technologies when the new building was still in the early stage of construction. It was a graduate building design role and IIRC there were performance clauses or something mentioned in the role.
.

The same day I was told this; I was offered another design role which I am still in now. We were right in the face of the recession; and none of my friends could find design placements so gladly accepted the job and declined the McLaren interview.

I would be lying if I said I didn't wonder 'what if' every day since.

That was nearly 8 years ago now.

But lo and behold, the company I now work for had a Ron Dennis backed project relating to McLaren Engineering crop up 2 years later; as well as a Patrick Head link to another. It was almost a sign

I got down to the last 6 oit of 80+ for a design engineer role at applied technologies a couple years after I graduated from university. Did a full concept design project for them, about 2 weeks work in 4 evenings to make the deadline. Went in the talking elevator that opened out suspended above Sennas title winning cars out to a rather sullen looking lady in a mid air reception desk all by herself. Impressive setting and vision for the building but extremely corporate and cold culture. Part of me wanted to work for McLaren but I wasn't gutted I didn't get the job. It didn't feel right.

The MTC is located in a difficult area for public transport, the local traffic is horrendous & finding accommodation to buy or rent is difficult & expensive.

So people such as young grads or those on a lower wage are disadvantaged.

There is one thing though, you could not make up.

As is usual in motor sport & the car industry, the so called 'great brains' did not do their job & create enough parking spaces for the number of people employed, even using the overflow area.

Now whoever was in charge of this, let's call him or her A.N. Arsehole, decreed that the long, wide access roads could not be used for parking because they made the place look untidy.

So this scheme was devised: Each morning, cars were double, triple & sometimes even quadruple parked, blocking in the majority of vehicles. So each

employee had to register their vehicles numbers with Security & leave a form on the windshield with their contact details. Then, when parking, they would take the details of the

other vehicles affected. Then once at work, they would open a computer program, list their intended time of departure & inform those involved.

If, for example, you needed to leave before somebody blocking you in, you had to contact them to get them to move their vehicle.

They would have to make the long trek to the car park, in rain & snow, sometimes more than once. That's if they were available & not tied up in meetings or important work.

I know of somebody who needed to leave at 3pm for an important doctor's appointment, only to be blocked in by a vehicle without the windscreen id.

After appealing on the tannoy system & checking with security, the vehicle was unknown & the culprit could not be found. He was blocked in until 6pm, when he vehicle mysteriously disappeared

& could not even leave the premises. He got no sympathy from reception, security or the wonderful HR people.

That's just one small story & he resigned very soon after, vowing never to work there again.

So don't get me started about the rest.....

I think I know everything I needed to know.  :rotfl:

@ALL: Thanks everyone for very constructive and helpful replies - even if they paint a rather sad and bleak picture. A fish rots from the head down perhaps?   ;)

I think that most of the F1 teams in the UK are difficult to get to using public transport, sure their may be a station near by but still take some 45mn-1hr walk to get to the place.

Mclaren has a number of shuttle buses that run between MTC and Woking town centre.  Whether they are for employees or for potential customers, I don't know.  As with all things Mclaren, they are rather mysterious and anonymous but they seem to be back and forth regularly.
