I made the mistake of giving an answer to the question, from memory, now I am doubting if I got it right!!!

Where was the Tyrrell 005 press presentation made?

I said the Kentagon, Brands Hatch, but I can't find confirmation.

Steve, I thought I was in Racing Comments for a moment, and you were relaying news of, at last, one worthwhile press launch for the new season.  But then I woke up and realised that 005 looks unique. And it doesn't have a halo.

Didn't 005 start racing mid-season in 1972? If so, it wouldn't necessarily have had a full-blown press launch would it? Or is that what you mean, something low key at the Kentagon over a couple of pints?

Well, in 1972 all press launches were low key, weren't they?

Yes, first race was Austria, but  there was a small gathering, and Ken poured champagne over the nose!!

There's a picture of it in Doug's Tyrrell book, which is at home, so I can't look at

Autosport for 15th June 1972 had a full-page article on the car, but said only that it 'was unveiled at Le Mans last week'. The photos show the car outside a fairly posh looking building next to some small round tables, so possibly a hospitality centre (Elf?). That issue also contains the report on the 24 hours race, so presumably the unveiling was at some stage in the run-up to the race.

No idea how to post a link to a single picture on Pinterest, but this might be the shot mentioned above.

It didn't feature in the Autosport article, but was definitely taken at the same location.

I'm sure the first time most of us saw 005 was when Stewart tried it in practice for the GP at Brands Hatch so The Kentagon could be a possibility

Yes, perhaps, and it would have been fairly low-key because the new car had already been used at a Grand Prix, the French at Clermont Ferrand. It was Cevert's main car in practice, he was setting fastest times but lost it, causing quite a bit of damage. (It happened to the best of them!). FRancois reverted to an older model at CF as did JYS at Brands.

Yes, flooring is identical, seems though that the car wasn't on the risers all the time

Presumably Francois let the handbrake off.

That final para is interesting. What were the main changes announced by the CSI that made the 1972 cars obsolete? And, in Tyrrell terms, was the superficially fairly similar 006 (launched later in 1972) a reworking of 005 designed to 'make it fit' the new regs?

Deformable Structures wasn't it?
When the car appeared in 73 it was noticeably 'fatter'

I was struck by the phrase "inboard front brakes are the most notable feature." Wasn't this barely a year after JYS had refused to drive the Lola T260 as long as it had inboard front brakes? What changed his mind?

Remember, '005' and '006' were chassis numbers, not type designations. They were both of the same type, like '001' to '004' were of the same, earlier type. Both of the '72 'Mk 2' Tyrrells were modified to meet the new '73 regs, specifying deformable structures.

When did the Kentagon open, wasn't it later than '72?

I keep thinking that, Dan.  Wasn't it around - or even after - 1976?  I haven't checked, but Sterling or Glyn would know...

'78 rings a bell with me, Mark. Though I've never been there at all!

Mark, I have vague memories of the Kentagon opening but blowed if I can remember if it was '76 or' 78, certainly around the time that the M20 extension opened though.

The Kentagon was opened in time for the 1978 Grand Prix for use by BARC, BRSCC and BRDC members, and at the Indycar meeting in October it was made available to the general public

I remember a Tyrrell F1 launch at a hotel on the north side of Heathrow Airport...but I cannot for the life of me recall for which year's car?  It might have been the 6-wheeler...but it might have been 005...

You are not wrong Doug, the P34 was launched at the Europa Hotel, Heathrow. I remember it as years later, I had a very clandestine meeting with someone who had flown in from the States at that very hotel. All to do with research on a book on JFK. That man had some very odd photographs that he really shouldn't have had, all with government stamps on..........

Oooh, interesting. Can you say more? Or if you do will you have to kill us? I suppose we could kill ourselves to save you the travel costs.

The guys name was Noel Twyman, can't  remember the name of the book. I did a load of research for him, sent it all over, and I  didn't hear anything for years. Then one day there was a knock on the door, and there was the post man with a huge canvas US mail bag, with a seal on the opening cord. My other half couldn't wait to see what was in it, and was late for  work, but inside was one copy of the book, and it is huge!!! I mean, I like reading, but it is a monster,, and all figures and science, but  one day!!

Yep, that's him, I am sure he had a glass eye, I kept thinking, "Colombo"! Very very analytical , and as I say the book is a monster, a good 3 to 4 inches thick. I suppose he went quiet because it took him a long long time to write!!

But was Peter Falk's glass eye playing a real eye?

Not playing, but working it.
