I recently saw a photograph of Peter Collins HWM being worked on in the pits during practice for the 1952 German Grand Prix. Parked further back along the pit lane is an Allard J2X bearing racing numbers. I know that there was a sports car race included in the programme and wondered if Peter drove his own Allard in this race which was won by Mercedes-Benz. I haven't been able to find any info on this race which is not mentioned in the 'All About The Boy' book. I recall the organizers questioning Peters racing experience(!) and wondered if he may have used the Allard to  gain experience of the circuit.

The race results on the WSRP site list an Allard J2 driven by Robert Nelleman from Denmark, so it’s probably that one:

Thank you Tim. I jumped to the wrong conclusion. I suppose it was unlikely that  Peter would have taken his own car there.

Thanks again.

Is the Allard in the photo left hand drive or right hand drive?  Collins's car would definitely have been RHD while Nelleman's would probably have been LHD.

You have most probably already done so ? but you might want to pose your question here, the Allard Register.

The photo of the Collins machine Eric mentions is on the Revs site, plus two more of the Nelleman Allard, but I can't seem to get the link to work   They have made some changes on the site.

I had the same problem as you, Michael, in trying to post a link to the three Nelleman photos. This seems to have worked, though:

Since that link includes

"Description

Car number 111 - HWM Bristol driven by Peter Collins. In the background is number 35 - Allard J2 driven by Robert Nelleman"

can you trust any of it?

HWM Bristol forsooth!

Thank you all very much for your trouble and help,  It looks as though my question is answered. The name Robert Nelleman  is a new one to me. Even at my age there are still things to learn.

If the results listing for him on the Racing Sports Cars site are any guide, Robert Nelleman did nearly all his racing in Scandinavia:

I did wonder if he was any relation to '70s racer Jac Nellemann, but most sources show two 'n's at the end of Jac's surname.

It turns out that you can zoom in that picture. That shows definitely a LHD car. But it also shows a nice detail. On the nose are the words "C'est si bon". Anyone knows more about that?

It is always Nellemann, not Nelleman.
AFAIK Robert is a cousin of Jac's father Vilhelm.

Thanks for the clarification, Reinhard.

Possibly connected to the song with that title which was very popular in that period:

Sadly for me, I still remember that song!. The title also featured on the nose of  George Wickens 500cc Cooper-Norton in the 1950's.

Nelleman's car used to have the text C'est si bon' on its radiator cowling, so there is no doubt that it is his car in the picture.
