Now this picture really has me foxed.

It appears to show Niki Lauda driving what looks like Alfred Vogelberger’s Olympic FVee. The picture is captioned “Niki Lauda was also successful in the successful MAHAG Olympic” on the ‘Motorsport für Jedermann: Geschichte und Geschichten der Formel Vau’ (Motorsport for everyone: history and stories of Formula Vau) website.

All the sources I have found only record Lauda racing Kaimanns, though I know he tested Bernard Goffinet's Austro at Zolder in 1969. So - does anyone have any information on when and where this photograph was taken (it must be late-1969 at the earliest, given the helmet design; he had changed from a white open-faced design to a white Bell full-face helmet before the red-orange lid was first seen at the Salzburgring in September).

I say that's Norisring, 1970, but not Niki Lauda. Helmut Marko ran the MAHAG-Olympic #1 in that race, see http://www.norisring.../1970/70_03.htm

Here's a picture with a similar background: http://www.norisring.../1970/70_58.htm

Or this one: http://www.norisring.../1970/70_23.htm

Excellent stuff, thanks Michael. Once again TNF provides the quickest and clearest solution!

i must confess i did think the typeface for the name on the side of the helmet looked slightly too large for Lauda's in-period lid.....

Much appreciated and kind regards.

According to the comprehensive and authoratitive "Formel Vau und Super Vau: Die Geschichte Eines Rennesport-Welterfolges" by Thomas Kessler, Frank Orthey and Lothar Panten, it IS actually Lauda at the wheel here. (Having photographed the image and zoomed in on the helmet, it does have his name in the side after all). As Michael says, it's the Norisring in 1970.

Apparently he had a guest "try-out" in Marko's car during practice for the F/Vee race; he was of course racing in the Interserie event in his ex-De Cadenet Porsche 908/2 the same weekend.....

I can confirm: It is definitely Niki Lauda. He is trying the Olympic-F-Vee from Helmut Marko in practice. Norisring june 27, 1970.

This is the old Grundig-hairpin. The Norisring was shortened after the fatal accident of Pedro Rodriguez 1971.

Perhaps you got the entry lists? http://www.norisring...arterlisten.pdf

Kind regards from Vienna

Thank you for posting that, it's fascinating to look at. Some impressive names there, although the obscure Lauda kid would eclipse them all very soon.

Is it just me, or is it simply a different cultural convention, or is the use of 'Dr.' before 'Helmut Marco' on an entry list a wee bit pompous?

A different cultural convention, I think.  You would call Helmut 'Herr Doktor Marko' if you were being formal.  Just like the Italians using the title on Ing. for qualified engineers, something that is never done in the Anglosphere.

I wonder if  it might be Hans Wallder in the Austro Vau, the programme having omitted #14 instead of #13?
