The dates for the Revival are interesting Tim - that's normally the weekend of the Spa Six Hours Historic meeting !!

Yes - that was the date I'd been given for next year's Six Hours.

The Festival of Speed is a week earlier than this year - hopefully not to clash with the HSCC's Super Prix at Brands Hatch .

It often appears that Goodwood's motor racing calendar is made to fit around it's horse racing fixtures rather than to fit into the motor racing schedule . The Member's meeting being held in April won't clash with the opening of Goodwood's horse racing season on May 4th , no race meetings take place between June 21st and July 30th to accomodate the Festival of Speed and the race meeting held on the first Tuesday in September ( just a few days before this years Revival ) could be the reason the Revival has been moved back for 2019 .

I believe the Members' Meeting date was moved in hopes of better weather conditions.

You're quite right Jack , that was the reason given but as those of us who live in the U.K. ( from memory I don't think you do ? ) the first weekend in April is , in turn , the Easter Bank Holiday where the weather can be glorious but equally can be absolutely foul .

If the organisers wanted a better chance of providing good weather the meeting should have been moved to May but that would clash with the start of their Horse Racing season . Of course there could be clashes with other Historic meetings but there could well be on April 6th as this year Peter Auto held their opening meeting that weekend ( Barcelona some way south of Goodwood ) . Of course I could be wrong with my theory . It's not unknown ....

Correct, I'm in the U.S. I hadn't really considered the horse racing aspect.

Another reason for not moving MM to May could be that it would be too close to Festival. Personally, I'm hoping the new dates will at least give us a chance of better weather, but yes, May would have been better still.

Revival has nearly always been 2nd weekend in September ie around the 13th. This year was the earliest for many years.

FoS has recently been a week before or after the British GP, which is sometime in June/July.

From memory, the dates aren't fixed in stone till the F1 GP dates are fixed, but I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong.

No live stream for us non-GRRC scum.  What a silly idea.  We couldn't get tickets anyway and now we aren't to be allowed to witness the great and good at play.

It does say, 'full live stream' for GRRC and Fellowship - does that mean limited access otherwise?

We'll be there anyhow :)

What they are doing is PTV. Will they do that a the other two events as well which get sold out?  I've enjoyed wating the live streaming but there is no way I would pay for it.

I complained early when they announced the MM restriction end of last year via Facebook - got the answer that it only will be the MM stream, other events will still be free for all.

We will see...

It worked.  Had it been last weekend, you'd've had to sail there.

I don't quite understand why people think it's incumbent upon GW to provide free streaming of their events. To be sure, I make use of it myself, but if they were to say, "sorry, you'll have to pay up for this service" I wouldn't necessarily like it, but I'd certainly understand and would make a decision based on value. As a GRRC member (who doesn't consider non-members to be "scum", by the way) I do expect to get services that may not necessarily be available for free to the general public. Otherwise, what would be the point of paying the annual fee? Living in the U.S. I'm limited by budget and time off to one event per year anyway, so I do enjoy the free stream of Revival (I attend only MM) but I would consider paying for it if that became necessary.

I'm hoping that the current forecast for only a chance of rain will hold, but an improvement on that would be even better! At least the chance of a blizzard seems rather slight this year.

And thereby hangs the challenge for many sports ...

Whilst I want to see my favourite race series, football team, etc, etc for free - where I want and when I want - there has to be a sustainable business model behind it. Some series like IMSA (US sports cars) gets it OR has made the strategic decision to invest in making their coverage open to all with no ads and informed commentary (except where broadcast locally I believe).  That approach has worked for me - I'll watch as many IMSA races as I can online and have been to races at Daytona, Laguna Seca and Sebring in the last three years as part of longer holidays.

However, I won't be watching F1 or Indycar this year now they all sit on the Sky platform in the UK. I can afford it, sure, but I have that slightly old-fashioned desire for value for money. My knowledge of those series and the chance of me going to an Indycar race are probably now reduced.   Now Sky or F1 might not miss me individually and there may not be enough of us to shift their strategy - but it is their prerogative - the outcome of which may be good, bad or indifferent. The latter will, I guess, be based on commercial factors and viewer numbers for their advertisers.

It's disappointing that Goodwood appears to be going the same way, but they clearly do need to have a strategy to attract and retain members and that slightly quaint category of fellows. I don't know if they have retained MasterCard who IIRC sponsored the streaming in previous years.  However, I suspect that many viewers will have the streaming on in the background while they go about other activities with full attention grabbed by the key races and not (warning - pet hate coming up) fashion notes.

The Right Crowd and no crowding even on the live stream apparently . I had assumed only maybe a few hundred fairly hardened enthusiasts would watch the Members Meeting stream but perhaps last year's foul weather encouraged others to watch rather than walk the dog/mow the lawn/ wash the car etc . Admittedly there are other incentives to spend £39 on a fellowship but personally I would rather spend my money attending the extremely interesting looking two-day meeting at Thruxton ( £28 for the weekend in advance ) or the ever popular ( and hopefully dry this year ! ) Castle Combe Autumn Classic , just £20 for a packed and entertaining day .

Looking at that, the one I want to see is the CTA-Arsenal.  Entered by Josef Otto Rettenmaier.   Stephen Rettenmaier is entering an OSCA so it looks as if the family have an interest in obscurities.  Which I approve wholeheartedly.

Never heard of the Chorlton Special.

Despite what's stated in that Bugatti forum I have a memory of the Chorlton-Alta Special being present at a VSCC Oulton Park in the 1960s (can't remember if it raced as they had trouble in practice). I also think I remember it had a twin-tube chassis, not a Bugatti one.

I had cleared the decks to spend a day watch the Members' Meeting on Sunday, but I'm not prepared to spend £39 for a day's television, and there's nothing else in the Fellows' membership that is of interest, so it looks like a day in the garage   Bye bye, Goodwood!

For those of us in the UK who are not 'the right crowd', there is coverage of the Members Meeting tonight on ITV4 - 18.15-20.20, after the BTCC tin-tops at Brands - and a one-hour highlights programme on Tuesday April 16th at 20.00.

Awesome meeting: weather the best that could be expected and a very varied array of automotive loveliness on show - much that I hadn't seen before. Only (minor) gripe was to get only one flying lap from the 917s on Saturday. But that's the only thing I can think of.

The food seemed better and more varied this year, so that would seem to be a big positive after myself and a few others I know put pen to laptop.

Congrats all round to those involved.

For me the best Members' Meeting yet. Glorious weather, lots of new cars, and to name but three races, the 1 litre, screamer F3, the Edwardian race and the Betty Richmond mini epic! Apologies for lack of captions, slightly pushed this morning!

At repose...

...and on track...

The engine:

And the badge.

47565603481_bd2310588c_b.jpg

I've long had a fascination with car badges, so it was frustrating to see in pictures of the CTA-Arsenal in the Standard Reference Works that it obviously had one, but there were no pictures with it.  So I took about a dozen pics when I saw it to make bloody sure.

I now note that it was originally painted as a French flag roundel, but of course is monochrome now in the unpainted state.  I'm in two minds about it.  It's nice to see the patina, but there's a part of me wondering whether it should be French blue and look like a "proper" racing car, and then see how many people recognized it.

Also Herr Rettenmaier giving the OSCA a fettle:

Coming in after a go:

And a true rara avis - the Ferrari 340:

I will have more to put up in the coming days...

Well, some great footage has managed to leak out to us plebs.  I was particularly delighted to see my long time favourite Stig Blomqvist winning.  And his lad Tom also driving like a vertiable chip off the old block.  Not to mention perrennial hate-figure in these parts, Andrew Frankel, making a good fist of it in the S.F. Edge Trophy race for the old 'uns.  Made me wish that I was there pretending to be posher than wot I am.

I was there but I sure ain't posh . Brilliant weekend - and nice to say hello. to the also not posh TNF duo of Messrs Nye and Arron .   Inter alios - oops...

Another journalist was Chris Harris, who , from the body language of the 917 , looked like he wished the McLaren pace car could have got even more of a move on in the 917 demonstration .

Chris Harris gave the Mini a good run in the Betty Richmond Trophy.  Qualifying for the final with some ease, and finishing 11th overall.  Right behind quondam BTCC racer Patrick Watts.

33689448858_dce3cc59be_b.jpg

^ Harris in the 44, with Jeff Smith behind.  Smith would eventually finish ahead.

One thing that was good to see was the delight of Leon Window, arm out of the window and patting the driver's door, at finishing 15th in the second heat - and becoming the last qualifier for the final.  Not a name I've heard of before but you could see what even starting a second race meant to him.

47566249421_34b4735eff_b.jpg

^ Frankel in the Bentley TT.  I honestly don't envy his job (much).  In that it must be pretty difficult to find new things to say about cars that are regressing to similarity.  So no wonder he tries stuff out in his columns.

Great to see the CTA-Arsenal. Has there ever been a write up of this car and its restoration (development?). I wonder if like so many other "failures" it was a case of not enough time/money in-period, but that it is actually a sound basic design. Or...?
